Friends of mine who oppose NCAA football playoffs argue that the entire season is more exciting because the season IS the playoffs. Each game matters. Each game as national title implications.
How lucky we are to see playoff intensity NBA basketball this early in the regular season!
By luck of the NBA schedule, your 5th-6thish ranked Phoenix SUNS continue its pre-playoff battles with an exciting back-to-back home-and-away Round 0 playoff against the 7-9thish ranked Denver Nuggets.
This playoff mini-series is expected to have full-series playoff intensity as both teams are fighting for positioning and survival. Phoenix is fighting for a first round home court advantage, which may matter more this year given that no matchup is a sure thing for any team. Denver is fighting to retain its playoff chances and is in a deadlocked three-way heat with Golden State and Dallas for two playoff spots. It's a regular season musical chairs nightmare.
Current Trends:
Both teams come into the series hot (or desperate), each having won 8 of their last 10 games.
We've also learned that the SUNS are not completely cured of turnoveritis. This vicious disease has not been as rapidly cured as we initially thought. It may recur and and is closely associated with low energy and coming out tired or flat.
Generic Forecast:
The obvious forecast between two highly motivated teams home-and-away, back-to-back is 1 and 1. This would be par for any highly contested playoff matchup. One would be tempted to think the SUNS could steal the extra game, based on the Nuggets lesser record and lack of playoff basketball success, but I don't see it here with the dangerous and comparatively healthy lineup the Nuggets are putting on the floor nor with the various SUNS current inconsistencies in energy and play.
X-factors:
Nuggets -
JR Smith is the outside shooter that could break the game open for the Nuggets. He was 6-8 from 3 against the Suns. He knows he will get open looks and like the rest of the Nuggets team, has great confidence playing against the SUNS. Alternatively, he could hand the game over to the Suns with a few knuckleheaded plays.
Suns -
- "NRG" - Which SUNS team is going to show up each night? Motivation is not a problem, but fatigue and nagging injuries are. The team that can summon more resolve will win. The second game of the back-to-back will be in Denver. If the SUNS come out flat or tired, we'll see a lot of turnovers and sloppy play that AI and team will be able to exploit.
- Whoever's guarding 6-8 230 Carmelo Anthony and it shouldn't be primarily 6-5 215 Raja Bell. Hopefully, 6-8, 225 Grant Hill can handle a bit of it, although he has been injured and committed a number of silly fouls in the 76ers game. Hill was covering AI most of the last game. With Hill out or Hill trying to put length onto AI, look for 6-6 220 Gordan Giricek to shoulder some of the defensive responsibilities on Melo.
- Bench Play. In my March 5th post game notes below, I said "This is why we lost (March 5th to Denver). We lost today because of the first half stretch with Nash out. It's hard to recover when you spot a good team 10 points in their arena." While Bench play will always be a wildcard with Beep-Beep and Boris Meow, this is the lesser wild card now that D'Antoni has a much better sense now of rotations and what works, like, for example, throwing the rock to Shaq in the low post whenever Nash is resting.
Background:
TexSUN's Post Game Notes
My Post Game Notes
The two teams last met March 5th in Denver, where the Nuggets outran the SUNS 126-113, outplaying the SUNS in the final three quarters. Shaq had monster game of 12 points on 5-6 shooting and 18 rebounds (Camby was 9 and 8).
They last played on January 7th at PHX with a score of PHO 137, DEN 115, but this game is meaningless given the SUNS dramatic personnel changes.
Here's an average comparison of the two teams, showing that both score about 109 and give up 105.
Western Conference
Rank Team W L PCT GB HM RD CONF DIV PF PA DIFF STRK L10
6 Phoenix 49 24 .671 1 26-10 23-14 25-18 9-6 109.9 105.2 +4.8 Won 2 8-2
8 Denver 45 28 .616 5 30-7 15-21 26-17 10-4 109.7 105.7 +4.0 Won 5 8-2
Pick Axe and Roll will have the view of the game from the Nuggets fan side.

Denver home and home
Hill will miss this one. I wonder if he wwill be ready for the rematch? We really need him for the playoffs, so it might be better if ha sits for a few more games.
I am looking for Amare to have a big game. Lets hope the fouls are kept to a minimum. Shaq needs to establish himself early. I also look for a big game from Steve. And please, someone keep a close eye on JR Smith!!
I don't like these back to backs

Back to backs
various comments
I love East coast phx games during week-end, it allows me to follow the live bloging, and even watch on this small window on this small computer... (I'll admit nights are a bit short, and I came flat on the job this morning. Not bringing the energy) I won't be able to watch the Denver series, and will have to wait until tomorrow to know the result. Hard.
Hill shall get some rests and Diaw continue to bring something to positive, `cause I'm getting quite upset when he has a bad night, knowing what he can provide. And they have to start early in order to take it easy at the end.
I'm just guessing more and more whether the elder in the team will be able to keep some energy into the post season with the minutes they are playing right now...And the intensity they'll have to bring through the end of the regular season. How do you feel about this? I know other team in the west face the same challenge, but they are not all so old, and have an easier schedule.
Anyway, I whish you all two nice games and I guess I won't be very productive tomorrow morning while I'll read all the comments!
Enjoy
Don't worry...
No Reason We Can't Win Both
- Diaw defends Carmelo. Boris has shown to be a decent defender at times and at the least can do a better job of keeping Melo off the offensive boards that killed us last time.
- Don't try to take charges from AI too often. He generally gets the benefit of the doubt even on the road. And we can't afford to have Raja in foul trouble.
- Avoid foul trouble on Amare and Raja like the plague. These will be our game winners on offense and defense respectively.
- Make Camby shoot jumpers. Even if he shoots 60% on jumpers he's not grabbing boards and tipping it in. Or getting our bigs fouled out.
- Control the pace. Slow with Shaq, blinding fast without him. Plenty of postups with The Big Cactus, plenty of Meep Meep without him.
- Protect the ball. The two trouble spots will be feeding Amare and Shaq and kicking it out for threes.

As always...
My wife replies, "when is it not a big game?"
That's easy, never. But with the tight race in the west, it really is a big game(s) vs Denver. I think we'll win tonight. But you can bet Denver will be motivated...3 way record tie for 7th (Denver, G.S. and Dallas) not counting matches against each other.

Nothing in this Verse can stop us!
I can´t talk to mi wife...
Anyhews, is there any way I can watch this game online? I know I always ask this question but this website:

Hill out tonight and tomorrow
I really don't like Bell having to cover Melo...I would like to see Bell start playing off him and see if he has his jump shot going. Melo is too strong and fast for Bell to keep out of the lane and off the boards.
Game on
Q1 10:36 - Sweet shot by Nash
Q1 9:55 - That looked easy
Q1 8:49 - Nice pass from Shaq to Amare
Q1 7:55 - Shaq as PG = very bad idea
Q1 6:07 Suns Lead 18-16
by MichiganSunsFan on Mar 31, 2008 7:24 PM MST reply actions
Denver cracks me up
They are SUNS 2005 lite.
The lead the league in blocks and steals, but have the worst defense in the NBA.
Let that be a lesson to Barbosa who wants to be the league steals leader....
Q1 5:01 - K-Mart does his best AI impression
Q1 3:45 - Tough night for Amare so far
...but that's Ok. Suns would probably rather have Nash's three.
Q1 2:28 - It's going to be a long night...
Q1 1:47 - Welcome back, Nene.
Q1 00:55 - Getting run out of the building
End of First Quarter
by MichiganSunsFan on Mar 31, 2008 7:41 PM MST reply actions
After one
So basically...
Q1 11:10 - Getting technical
Q1 9:46 - Definition of mismatch
Q2 8:30 - Amare's jumper isn't working...
Q2 7:11 - Using that butt
Q2 6:02 - We needed that
Q2 5:03 - Too many offensive rebounds
...meantime, Nash launches another three that draws nothing but air. I agree with the announcers, that looked like a "sore shoulder" shot.
Down 20 soon to be 18

Where's Skinner
This is the perfect game to have played Skinner. Bring in some defensive energy and at least try and get a stop!
At the half
Wow, where to start? The Suns shooting is "up" to 32%. The Nuggets' is "down" to 60%. So that's kind of good news I guess. The Suns also have seven steals to the Nuggets' five, proving that (as someone said above) steals don't always translate to "good defense". But the shot attempts are even at 53 each. The Suns just missed a lot more of theirs than the Nuggets. The five Nugget blocks no doubt played a hand in that.
Ugh...
what is going on
Fuck

Q3 8:41 - Ouch!
Raja's three closes it to 77-63.
Q3 8:05 - They done made Nash mad now
Suns cut it to 77-66

Q3 6:46 - Blogger's jinx
Q3 5:29 - Too many fouls
Q3 5:18 - That stinks
...Raja gets the two anyway at the free throw line. 84-72, Nuggets.
Q3 3:30 - Something from nothing
...make that six after Nash's layup. 86-80, Nuggets.
Hell of a little turnaround

Q3 2:13 - Best play of the night from Diaw
wow rex chapman
cant believe it. that guy got us nash with his friendship with nash, but then said the wrong things about Nash's MVP and he was OUT of the suns after that
Q3 1:14 - !??!?!?!
Q3 00:24 - How many of those...
After three
Q4 12:00 - I guess Dan D'Antoni didn't like...
Q4 11:16 - OK, it is WAY too late in the game for
...but the Suns redeem themselves with the three from Nash. You know, if the Suns get the lead and Nash goes to the line, I don't want to hear a quiet crowd. Give it up for tonight's MVP.
Q4 9:58 - Three-for-all!
Q4 8:44 - LB slacking off
Nash's line
Q4 7:07 - Nash and Amare get revenge
...but without the free throw. 108-104, Nuggets.
Q4 6:36 - Nash is REALLY fired up tonight
...and Shaq with the clutch free throw, we have a 1-poitn game. 108-107.
Q4 5:45 - Sweet!
Q4 5:11 - Big guys rule
...or five after Iverson answers. 116-111, Suns.
Q4 4:03 - Luck is turning
Suns are starting to run away now, at 120-111 after Diaw lays it in.
What an amazing comeback!

Nash sets a career high
WOW
Q4 3:14 - Amare goes to the line
Q4 2:42 - Oops!
It was Rope-A-Dope
Hang on the ropes for the first half, then float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
It shouldn't have been like that, but that's what it was!
Denver - a classic spoiler team. Almost no chance of making it to the second round of the POs
Q4 2:09 - Nash at the line for two
Shame on Phoenix fans (some of those at the USAC)
Suns

Q4 1:19 - Hack-a-Shaq?
Ok, I take it back
I agree, but the crowd didn't
Last tech aside
Kerr needs to tell the team to stop making techs a record every game. I love the emotion and the toughness, but play harder, not complain more.
And that's the game
We'll do it again tomorrow night.

Agreed that Amare is now...
Hey
I'M FUCKING KIDDING! Oh my fucking god, I was so pissed at the half I nearly punched my computer. And then, at the 3rd, everything fell in its right place. The Suns are nothing short of amazing. Even Diaw looked good in the second half. Amare is a BEAST. I guess if we had made the trade earlier, he would be getting lots of love for MVP. 41 and 14? WTF?! And what about Nash? And give some love also to Shaq, who had a nice quiet 20 and 12 night.
LB SUCKS right now, but we can win in such an amazing way even without him. Damn. Great, GREAT win.
