Defensive Problems??

Boy, doesn't this story have it right?

Star-divide

No amount of "effort" or "strategy" is going to help the SUNS when the Coach's big idea is to put Raja Bell on Carmelo Anthony.

I thought we just got bigger, so why are putting a pit bull the size of a chihuahua on a bulldozer the size of an gas-conscious SUV?

Bell on Melo is just so bizarre on so many levels.  This is NOT like putting Bowen on Dirk.  Dirk is a pansy finesse player, a 7-foot waif.  Melo is a 6-8 guy built like Mike Tyson and Ron Artest.

What a brain fart that was.

Now can we also say, "Raja, you need to try harder.  More Energy!!"

Defense on the bench
I addressed this in my diary post, but again, where were DJ Strawberry and Brian Skinner?  They could have given us at least 5-7 quality minutes against Iverson and Anthony.

I know the Suns lose some offense when they're on the floor, but when the opposing team scores fewer points, your team needs to score fewer points as well! It's pretty simple math, really.

Why not DJ?
He's not shooting that much worse than Bell, and he's stronger.

The worst part of that match-up was how Bell repeatedly let Melo get O-rebounds

For once, a Hollinger article
...that I can't really argue much with:

(insider "free preview" article)

Guess it speaks to lowered expectations and general pessimism that I'm actually agreeing with something Hollinger wrote. Gotta go shower now. I feel dirty.

I know it's getting old, but...
I'm sticking to the patience mantra for two more games.  I figured the Shaq assimilation would take 10 or so games to make.  They're 3-5 since he joined the roster.  Ideally, I'd like to see them go 2-0 over Utah and San Antonio.

If you're done laughing, I'll continue, thank you very much.

But I'll settle for a split.  However it goes, I'll be basing my judgment on their prospects for the post-season on all results after these two games.  If anything, my expectations (and perhaps, resultant disappointment) will significantly increase with the 10-game "mid-season pre-season" under their belts.

Mid season pre-season
I love it. That's a phrase that I would love to steal borrow

I'm optimistic

but my only point was no amount of Suns jello would solve a matchup of Bell on Melo.

Good links.  The Hollinger article is scary, but I'm still (sarver-)banking on the suns figuring things out and surprising people as they have in the past.

I think we're learning a whole lot more about our team than we ever did before.
