Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Celtics announced Tuesday that executive director of basketball operations and general manager Danny Ainge has received a contract extension and has also been promoted to president of basketball operations.
The 49-year-old Ainge acquired All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in trades prior to last season. Those deals elevated Boston back into the elite class of the NBA, and helped the Celtics capture their NBA record 17th Championship in franchise history. For his work, Ainge won the 2007-08 NBA Executive of the Year.
"Danny was visionary as he assembled the players who brought home our seventeenth banner," Managing Partner and CEO Wyc Grousbeck said. "His work ethic, character and insight earned him Executive of the Year and earned us a world title."
Ainge, who won two championships as a player with the Celtics, was originally named to the position of Executive Director of Basketball Operations after the 2002-03 campaign. He played 14 years in the NBA and appeared in six NBA Finals during his career. Besides Boston, Ainge also played for Sacramento, Portland and Phoenix.
