Belated Media Day Musings
This isn't going to be nearly as thorough as I had originally intended (and maybe that's a good thing since "thorough" is often just another way of saying "excessively verbose"), but here are a few observations now that I finally had the 90 minutes required to watch the entire Suns Media Day video:
- Several players were sporting the "hip-hop" mohawk Amare Stoudemire introduced at the Suns.com newsroom opening in August. Alando Tucker joined in on the fun as well as Leandro Barbosa and Marcus Banks. I've been wondering when Steve Nash will get his done. Maybe he's using the same excuse as Sean Marks: "It wouldn't look good with a receding hairline".
- Both Raja Bell and Leandro Barbosa mentioned their midrange game when asked what they had worked on this summer. Amare Stoudemire took his range the other direction and said he plans to make at least 50 three-pointers this year. Steve Nash was less enthusiastic about the idea: "I hope he doesn't fall in love with the three. Those mitts are too big. We need to get him down by the basket dunking on people." (For the record, I agree with Nash).
- Amare also said he had been working on his ball-handling, as well as his defense, and reiterated his goal (or was it Phil Weber's idea?) to win Most Improved Player this season. When asked about playing for Team USA, he mentioned that Team USA had a good thing going with Mike D'Antoni being a great offensive coach and Mike Krzyzewski being a great defensive coach. Kind of a "best of both worlds" situation. Hmm... I wonder if his team USA experience might inspire Coach K to reconsider a move to the NBA and come join Mike D'Antoni as an assistant?
- Not to make this entire post about Amare, but ever notice how many times he uses the phrase "no doubt about it"? Maybe we should make that our official Bright Side of the Sun slogan. Then again, given our recent discussion on jinxes, maybe that's not such a good idea.
- Some hope for Marcus Banks? At least he and Mike D'Antoni said all the right things, and seemed to be on the same page about what Marcus needs to do to play himself back into the rotation. A hint: It doesn't involve scoring 42 points a game like he did for his lone summer league appearance.
- Leandro on Kobe: "He'd better get ready". Sounds like LB is looking forward to a rematch after that beatdown Team USA put on Leandro's Brazilian team in the FIBA Americas tournament. I hope he feels the same way about Manu Ginobili and crew.
- Mike D'Antoni made it clear the rookies will have to "move someone over" if they want playing time this season. He also joked that Grant Hill could go 48 minutes a game. Hey Coach, how about we meet in the middle?
- In case you missed it, Casey Jacobsen is back in the NBA playing for the Memphis Grizzlies.
- Forget mohawks, maybe they should all grow goatees like the one sported by Brian Skinner. Then again, maybe not. Somehow, that two-tone, three-inch scruffy chin look just doesn't do it for me. On the other hand, I loved what Skinner had to say. I'll forgive him the chin hair if he's half as good on defense as his interview was.
- Not a single hint from anyone that Amare would be undergoing knee surgery the very next day after this was taped. They had to have known by then, right? An Oscar-caliber performance by all involved.
- The quote of the day as far as I'm concerned (though folks in Orlando might disapprove) was Grant Hill's "Being here is like a reward". In fact, that's our new featured quote for the top right sidebar. This guy just seems to exude energy. It's clear how happy he is to be in Phoenix, and how much he's enjoyed being able to work on his game for "the first time since the summer of 1999". It's also obvious he wants to do whatever he can to help this team win a championship. I'm voting Grant as most likely to smack the next guy who grumbles about wanting to play for the Lakers.
- Speaking of guys who want to play for the Lakers, Shawn Marion was nowhere to be found in the video, although there was the previously-mentioned clip on AZCentral. Everyone who was asked about him reiterated the statements that have been already made by Steve Nash, Raja Bell, and Mike D'Antoni: It won't be a distraction, they all want him to stay, and once training camp starts, the focus will be on basketball, not what's been said. Paul Coro's latest blog entry on AZCentral has the best Shawn Marion news we've seen in several days.

Like the beard thing they did a while back, that seemed a better fit. TexSun said the suns team 2 yrs ago (while Amare was injured) was part of the reason she fell in love with the Suns, me also, I just don't get that vibe as a team now. I was pushing for the garnett trade, and I wish it had happened, but financially, I'm glad it didn't.
The Suns are a classy organization for the most part, but, everyone is fooling themselves if they think the Marion thing is nothing. If I was on that team, and Marion (the highest paid player) was pulling this shi., yeah, I could be nice and say the right things also, but this would be the thing that burned the bridge as far as I'm concerned.
But, I have to say, Grant Hill is going to be fantastic this year, if he stays injury free (enough to keep playing), I even think he has a chance at mvp. Having similar attitudes around like Nash, Barbosa, and Bell is a great fit for Hill. I feel bad for Florida, I wish it was them being excited, but, with our many bad luck things,
we deserve Hill.
I have to say this on banks, the guy has talent, he's a strong defender, he can obviously score, I wish we could figure a way to have him and the suns work. I honestly thought some of the D'antoni's comments on Banks were a little strong
and not very well thought out (unless they were said to tick him off and motivate him). D'antoni is the guy (x-G.M) who made the deal, he should be mad at himself, not Banks! Personally, I'd rather have a season where we slide in at 4th or 5th and try and play more people and get them developed for the playoffs. Instead of trying to be first, but have half the team never play but a minute a game!$#$# We're a strong enough team that we should not care as much about seating and who we play, but care more about trying to develop our entire team.
The more I think about Marion, I'm starting to back off some, he has his reasons for playing, and if winning a title isn't his number one, that's ok (for him, not us). It doesn't fit well with this team, but it's ok, I really think he'd be happier being the star of another team and not even make the playoffs. I think you have different groups or types of guys playing in the nba.
Among other groups....
1 group are the insanely competitive guys like Jordan, Bird, Nash(and I don't think Nash is physically like these other 3 guys in size, but in desire to win, he's right there!), Kobe, etc.
1 group just like to play and make a lot of money, and have some serious status (respect) in the U.S.
I think Marion is in this second group, and that's ok. But, it doesn't jive well with this team. Amare is definitely in group 1 and is smart enough to realize all the group 2 benefits will be there the harder he works at being a group 1 guy. It sounds like if Nash was online and typing on this blog also, we'd be having a competition about whose writing better, more links, etc :-)
As a suns fan, it's this kind of drive that makes me love Nash, the game where Nash took over and we came back and beat Dallas last year, that was awesome!
On Marion, chemistry, etc.
Great point about Nash, btw. His competitive nature is part of why I think this Marion thing may go better than I predicted. He seems every bit as determined to make this work as he did at the end of that Dallas game you mentioned.
diaw az article
Link to az Diaw article
"Diaw's nonchalant manner frustrated teammates at times last season. His easygoing personality is unlikely to change, but point guard Steve Nash said the Suns can fuel his confidence. He said Diaw thrives off team chemistry, a weak area last season." (quotes mean it's from az article, not a quote)
This verifies what we were kind of saying before, the team chemistry last season was weak compared to 2 years ago...
and this from diaw article also
this thought really says a lot about Diaw and how unselfish he is, I really do like him, but, there's no question if he can turn off and on the aggressiveness, it'd help him and the Suns. I think that's the way for him to look at it, a switch to turn off an on, and to NOT try to keep it on all the time. It is exciting to hear more positives.... :-)
Boris Diaw Day?
yep
Ok, let's do it...
wow
I still think some of the others on this site might be correct in going ahead and sacrificing a chicken or something..
