Suns vs. Lakers; More Depressing than My Checking Account
[Editor's Note: Thanks, JSun for taking time to write some postgame commentary that is more entertaining than it sounds like the game was.]
Why did I leave the house?
If I wanted to get depressed, I would've stayed home and tried to balance my checkbook. I could've stayed home and drank cheaper, non-flat beer. The best part of my night at the arena was at halftime when the keg went dry and foam exploded all over my brother and the guy behind the concessions stand. It was funny because it wasn't me, but nothing went right. To top it all off, the Hawks beat the Mavs.
What was the score? It wasn't even that close.
The night started out well enough. My brother and I got downtown about 6:15 and enjoyed a Guinness at Seamus McCaffrey's - it's a nice pub and they know how to pour a Guinness. The fish fry is a pretty good meal because the fish they use are light on the breading. It's nice to get some fish with your deep-fried bread. I didn't have the fish tonight, but I highly recommend it.
That Guinness was the highlight of my night.
I was confused on some of the calls, too. The "journalists" and TV commentators have been saying the NBA is going back to the old "rule of verticality" - if the defender jumps straight up and the offensive player bangs into him, it's not a foul on the defender. Amare got called for two of those "fouls."
Not that it matters. The Lakers shot 57% and the Suns shot 42%. The Suns also shot 68% from the line. Even worse, Derek Fisher only seemed to hit shots when the Suns defenders were smothering him; he missed the wide-open jumpers. Worse yet, Vlad the Snowboarder and some guy named Sasha were draining their shots.
The only good defense of the night came on defending Fisher and he only hit the contested shots. Damned if you do and damned if you don't, I suppose. I can't remember how many times they doubled Walton or Turiaf (aka, "the Predator") and left Bryant open. I hope that wasn't part of game plan. Also, Walton schooled Trix at least three times. That should've been embarrassing.
Offensively, they were even worse. On the "plus" side a lot of shots rimmed out, so you've got to be hopeful that those shots are usually going to fall. On the much larger negative side, I want an apology. And I want it to be signed by Raja Bell and whoever decided it was a good idea to run plays for him in the third period. He's shooting something like 1 for 20 and they're running back screens and curls for him.
I think my favorite play, though, was when DJ threw up an alley-oop that hit the top corner of the backboard. If you're going to miss that badly, I suppose you might as well create a long rebound so that the trailers have a chance to catch it.
The one 3 that Hill chucked looked awful. He's got a different stroke for threes than he does for his 18-footers. I'm not sure why, but it seems he doesn't have (or doesn't think he has) the strength to keep his form from that distance. I'm still hopeful he can develop that shot by mid-season.
On a much more depressing note, I'm not at all comfortable with my new season tickets. A couple of rows down, three guys were swearing something awful. I'm taking my 4 year old boy to the Cavs game and he really doesn't need to learn those words so early in life. When someone pointed that out to him, even more swears came out. Someone asked him to sit down and he went into a Homer-esque tirade about how buying a ticket gives him the right to be disgusting. He started to pick a fight with someone else across the aisle.
He yelled at me for being rude when I asked him to sit down; so I responded, "I'm sorry. Please sit down." That shut him up for a while because it confused him.
Security eventually took him away. That guy was rip-roaring drunk by 8:30. Is he a drywall contractor or something? (I know a few drywall contractors and most of them really like their beer, but they are all more well-behaved from this guy).
The other season ticket holders and I figured that he probably only bought this one ticket (that's what we're hoping, anyway) because he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can hold down a job and afford season tickets.
After that, my brother saw a guy puking in the bathroom. We're not sure if it was the beer or the game.
We also saw a few other falling-down drunks. We've come to the conclusion that the home opener must be the equivalent of the New Year's "amateur night." Next year I might just stay away.
All around, I should've stayed home.

man...
On Bell, he's not a consistently great shooter, never has been, he's a streak shooter, and not even a great one. I really like bell, but he shouldn't shoot as much as he does. There's such a thing as off nights, then there's another thing as a pattern of poor decisions. With weapons like Hill and Amare, we should be attacking the hoop more.
Great call on the Amare jump straight up, but get called for a foul because the offensive player ran into him. It's a simple thing, even if it is wrong. It's common knowledge in this league (at least now) that Amare gets into foul trouble, because of this, I think refs tend to make calls that are phantom calls, we sure saw enough of it during the spurs playoffs (thinking of a tim duncan block by Amare in particular).
Nash is not looking good, his passes have been picked off often the last two games, this is a very scary thing, if this continues, so go the suns. But, it's earlier, let's hope they just need to wake up. Personally, I don't think it'll be that simple, I think our chemistry is screwed, and I'm not referring entirely about Marion, I think a few others just don't click, Amare is a big part of this. I feel bad for him, because he has some of the very most exciting moments of any Suns player in a long time.
I love this team, and I will keep watching them all season long, but this also needs to be said. When talking about 3 point shooting, this current team just doesn't do much for me vs the Suns team 2 years ago. If we had a shooter/ball handler like Joe Johnson still, or Mike Miller, I think we could do more with the 3 pt line, but not with our current team. It's like we're in the middle, not at the top. Nash is really the only pure outside shooter on the team.
Nice to see Marion hit some shots.
Anyone know what's going on with Barbosa, apparently he only plays hard and aggressive when it's already over.
I want to see Hill forget about trying to become a 3 pt shooter, instead he should be attacking the basket, this guy is one of the best ball handlers / drivers to the basket ever, yet it seems there's too much emphasis on either protecting Hill from injuries, or trying to make him a 3 pt shooter.
I know Nash was getting caught in the air with no one to pass to, but, on the other side of this, the other suns players should be cutting and slashing to the hoop when Nash does, it's not rocket science that he'll get you the ball if you don't stand still!! Frustrating!
If your Amare, how do you get rid of a reputation for fouls, etc. I think that's a tough thing, to get rid of preconceived ideas about players that refs have in their heads. Plus, it's dirty, but I'm sure a lot of teams are thinking about trying to get a quick 2 fouls on Amare. Until they do away with fouling out, I think Amare will suffer, some of it being his fault, maybe most of it not.
I really liked skinner!
On Banks, this guy has a lot of skills, and provides more offense than some of our starters right now, but he can't make a good pass to someone 10 feet away.
Wish this was more positive...

Geesh!
Thank you for the summary. I was at the game also last night. I was frustrated by Nash's turnovers and the overall bad play from the entire team. I just wanted them to get out of their misery. They looked just awful. I couldn't stay to the end. I didn't want to keep watching them get whipped the way they did. Hopefully, they will come out and play better tomorrow against the Cavs. I will be attending this game also. The bright spot will definitely be seeing Jerry Colagelo inducted into the Ring of Honor!

um....
- laker scrubs were hitting threes like they were all Ray Allen
- Kwame Brown had a better game than Amare. Kwame!!!
- LAZY DEFENSE. Fisher hit those shots due to luck and also b/c they were not very contested, imo. And how many easy buckets did Bynum get? Or all the lakers for that matter.
Frustrating, but we'll move on. I just hope we can adjust b/c there WILL be occasional situations where no one is hot, but we can't just roll over like logs just cuz our shots aren't falling and then let our opponents get hot and blow us away. Especially when those opponents are the lakers.
-Also D'antoni shouldn't have complained in regards to his little jab with Jackson. I couldn't believe Amare was still on the floor in the fourth.

Also
What bothers me is the suns, including D'antoni, looked like they expected this to be an easy game (ok we all thought that) but they definitely took this one for granted and played without energy. Then when they were down and not defending, and the lakers were hitting everything they threw up, everyone looked pissed off and gave up. The announcer made a comment during half time that D'antoni said they suns might be "fat and happy" from all the media praise. I think this is a good wake up call.
Overall, I'm not worried. But a couple things bothered me.

man
what a sight to behold. steve nash getting abused by derek fisher. the refs trying their hardest to keep the suns in the game. to no avail. although i'm sure some idiot will point to the refs as some excuse for the buttkickin' delivered.
don't worry. remember. you've beat us in the playoffs two years inna row. that's big. and you went on to? lose and not get to the finals. sorry 'bout that. you sure are an entertaining group to watch tho. except when you're down by 30. then it's not so fun.
enjoy the L. and we'll be looking forward to seeing you again.

Easy to be cocky two games into the season, man
The less said about this game the better. Sorry to hear about the idiot fans at the game making it such a bad all-around experience.
I say let's just move on.

Great post JSun
Bickley had a good column (for once?) on the game, too.
Just a bad game, and in my experience with watching early season Suns games, sadly not unexpected.

Not Ready Jump
On the fans, I now recall one of the drunken idiots claiming to be a Cardinals fan and from "A-Town." Like "Arizona-Town" or something? I haven't been to a Cards game in over 10 years (maybe more), but isn't the reputation that most of those guys are drunk and looking for trouble? Football riff-raff.
And, last year, my son and I had a great time at the games we went to (about 5 or 6). The fans were great to him. There's a few stories there of tolerance and sweetness. So, I'm not worried about taking him tomorrow and I didn't intend to scare anyone off.
One of my boy's favorite movies is "Chicken Little." Chicken Little has some great resolve after the whole acorn/sky falling thing. In the movie, he says that "Tomorrow is another day" and goes on to save the world.
See you at the game tomorrow.

Stats
Vomit.
Ew.
They had an effFG% of 63%. We were at 47%.
I thought we won the offensive rebounding battle, but that's only in pure numbers. Our offreb% (off reb/offreb+oppdefreb) was an abysmal 17% to their 31%. That's bad. When you consider how badly the Suns shot, they didn't battle for rebounds at all.
We won the turnover battle!
But it didn't help much.
So Matrix put in 35 minutes last night. He had an effFG% of 48%. He had 10 board, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. So, you know, Shawn came to play.
Look, there was no way we were winning this game. You're not going to win when the other team shoots 60% most times. But the fact that we continue to be unable to stop or create shots in the paint is a glaring, blazing, gigantic concern.
Also, and I'm just saying, but...
Steve Nash looks like his back is hurt.
Again, I'm not putting more into these two games than is there, I'm pointing out areas of concern.

Back or hamstring?

My concern
Also, Barbosa was O fer on free throws. That's nice.
Skinner had 5 offensive rebounds. If we can get him to be able to put it back up, that's going to help a lot.

Football Riff-Raff???
I saw very little of the game, but I did notice Bell's utter unnoticibility. I don't get to actually watch that many games and was hoping for a better showing.
Didn't the Suns start slowly last year?
No worries. It's only November 4.
Have fun today, JSun. Ask the concessions stand people to give you a heads up when the keg's about to tap out this time, and if the drunk guy's there, offer to buy him another round at the opportune time. It might be worth the $7.00 to see the foam explode on him.
