Suns Take Care of Business in Win Over Raptors (122-103)

As I mentioned in the game thread, there was something a little anti-climatic about this game coming on the tail end of a western road swing through San Antonio and Dallas, and just ahead of a rematch against the Lakers in LA. This didn't have that "big game" feel to it that we got to see last week, and should get to see again on Tuesday. But the Suns took care of business just the same.

In a formula we've seen quite often, the Raptors kept the game close in the first half, despite this being their fourth road game in five days. But tired legs met determined Suns in the third quarter, and the game turned into a blowout. In another formula familiar to Suns fans, the Suns allowed a career night by Chris Bosh (42 points), but it kept the other Raptors from torching the Suns from outside. The Raptors, who lead the league in three-point percentage at 43%, were held to just 26%. The Suns easily won the three point battle, going 44% on 11-of-25. But it's probably more accurate to say that Leandro Barbosa won the three-point battle. He was 7-of-10 on threes all by himself, making up for an otherwise less-than-stellar long distance shooting night from just about everyone else. Barbosa ended up with a team-high 31 points, furthering the case made by some fans that he should become the full-time starter.

If the Suns weren't getting it done from behind the arc except for LB, they sure were getting it done from everywhere else. The Suns shot 52% overall, with everyone in the starting lineup except for Steve Nash (3-of-7) shooting 50% or better. Amare Stoudemire led the way in the accuracy department, going 11-of-18 on his way to 28 points. Grant Hill followed closely with 9-of-15 and ended up with 25 points. Shawn Marion's 5-of-9 netted him 12 points, and Nash had seven. But anyone who thinks Nash was slacking wasn't watching the game--he's a big part of why his fellow starters were on fire. This was one of those nights when you got the feeling Nash could have ended up with 20+ assists had he been needed for longer than 31 minutes. Instead, he ended up with 16 assists, no turnovers, and a team-high +23 in the plus/minus column.

The passing seemed to be infectious at times tonight. While Nash led the way by far in credited assists, the ball was really being shared by everyone. Marion had a quiet night by his standards on the board and on the scoreboard, but he netted five assists and a team-high three blocks. All-in-all, while this game likely won't make it into the list of favorite games of the season, it was a nice workmanship performance by the Suns--the kind that was missing in those games against Miami and Minnesota a couple of weeks back.

Player of the Game: Tough choice. I'm going with Steve Nash because it seemed like his play-making was the biggest difference here. But it could just as easily be Leandro Barbosa--that stretch where it seemed he just couldn't miss from three was huge (incidentally, at least two of those shots were off of Nash assists). Another valid choice is Amare Stoudemire, particularly with his work on the boards. Grant Hill is also an excellent choice. You really can't go wrong with any of those guys tonight, but I'll let the plus/minus be the tie-breaker (as much as I hate that stat).

Runner-Up: Chris Bosh. A career-high will get you a mention here every time.

Grading the Game: I'll say "A-". The part of me that likes intense, competitive games (or at least games where something really memorable happens) wants to knock it down a tad for failing to be the kind of game I want to save on my DVR for repeated viewings. But that's not the Suns' fault. They did what they were supposed to do. "A-" it is.

The case for Banks...and more...of course...
This was indeed kind of a ho-hum game but the Suns needed that going into Tuesday's national TV grudge match w/ the hated Lakers (who are looking VERY good this year. More on that later.). It was great to see LB get off for 7-10 from 3 and Amare (who I have been ragging on) looked good.

Defensively, the Suns were excellant. After a scary first few minutes when it looked like the Miami game all over again, the Suns woke up. And while Bosch had his career night, the Suns held the team to 40% FG and clearly the Suns are saying to teams with one big scoring option that they will be happy letting that guy go off as long as the others are held in check. Without TJ Ford to penetrate and get to the rim (or foul line) then the Suns showed how to beat this type of team.

The funny thing about that is according to an article in ESPN the Mag the league is going more to the Suns style of having 1 big and 4 shooters and 3PA are WAY up this year.

Here's the funny part, the Suns are moving away from this system. This Suns team is much less dependant on the 3 then in past years and is consistently beating teams on points in the paint and their FTA's are way up too. Credit Grant Hill and also LB's continued development but also credit Coach D for changing up the system.

Of course, the Suns know just how to play teams like this (Orlando, Toronto and the Spurs minus TP). You single cover the big guy and let him score his 40pts and don't leave the shooters open. Not only can you stop a team like that from beating you with one guy, you are much better positioned to get rebounds.

Just goes to show you, like most everything else in life, balance is the key and this Suns team has got to lead the league in balance.

As for Banks - and I will keep it short - I think he could easily start for a lot of teams or at least be a solid back up. Lots of teams would take his $4m/yr contract but unless he gets consistent minutes so he can put up some numbers that's not going to happen. He's a very solid on the ball pressure defender and can certainly score. He's not great at running the offense but neither is LB (or anyone compared to Nash). So why not give Banks 20 min per game for a few weeks and see what happens. Bell clearly needs some rest. And the result might just be a trade that will send him somewhere and get us another big which we sorely need.

great points on the suns, I especially like the suns not trying to double team the best player, as long as the other players don't kill us.

good idea and I agree on Banks, just maybe it will happen, but, I think your right, that it won't. It's got to be tough for Banks to not be playing when he has the skills to play more.

Great to see them win like this even with Bosh scoring so much. Should be a lot of fun this xmas day with the Lakers. Since the Lakers are a better team than last year, Bynum is playing better, Odom is playing well (and apparently unhurt), and Kobe has lost 15 pounds! To me, with the way the Lakers have been playing, this is a big game. I'd rate the Lakers as one of the top 7 teams in the entire league, should be fun!

Pulling Back on the Throttle
Good points, that I guess I kind of realized but was never really able to express.  The blazing-fast Suns originally confused teams, then the copy-catters came out, and now that others are realizing what is happening the Coaching Staff is throwing a change-up.  Yeah, this might work.

And some props for STAT?  I guess the Christmas Season is making you soft ;)

Big Stat fan
I have always and remain a big fan of Amare's. I disagreed w/ the idea of trading him for KG or really for anyone else. Mostly b/c of his heart and effort and willingness to improve combined w/ his awesome talent.

But, recently - since the Minny game I guess - his level of play has been down and I "called him" on it. I guess he must read this blog :) and responded well against Toronto although his outside shot still isn't falling.

We'll see how he does on Christmas. He will have his hands full against Bynum and you know that Phil Jax likes to pound it inside against the Suns and with a healthy Odom and much improved (most improved?) Bynum they are going to be a handful.

If this Lakers team can stay healthy and continues to improve they will easily be the #4 or #5 seed in the West and will not roll over in the first round like they did last year.

No live blogging huh?
Ok - end of the 1st Qtr and the Suns are up 26-25. Great game so far. Great energy and effort. Amare was fantastic early as was Nash and Marion. It looked like they were trying to get Marion involved offensively and he just barely missed a few at the rim but moved GREAT w/o the ball - as always.

Then Diaw came in an wow. He looked fantastic. He finished on a great Nash assist and then caught the ball on the baseline, pump faked his man and drove and then launched himself at the rim for a two-handed dunk. He was fouled by Odom and didn't finished but the aggressivness was was thing of beauty. Defensively when Nash and Amare were out Skinner got two quick blocks and the Suns really played hard.

This looks like its going to be a great game.
