Suns Set New Season High in Win Over Raptors (136-123)

No down to the wire nailbiter this time. After letting the opposition pull uncomfortably close at the end of the first half for the second game in a row, the Suns brought the hammer down in the third quarter. They outscored the Raptors 45-29 in that quarter. No, that's not a typo. 45-29!

This was a great game to watch if you like offense. If you like to see guys put the ball in the hole, this was the game for you. The Suns had seven players in double-digits. The Raptors had five in double-digits, and three near-misses with eight points each. The Suns were led by Leandro Barbosa, who rediscovered his three-pointer (5-of-14) on his way to 35 points. The most efficient shooting night came courtesy of Amare Stoudemire, who went 9-of-11 for 25 points, and made all seven of his free throws. Grant Hill ended up with a near double-double, adding nine assists to his 17 points. Quite amazing considering that Steve Nash had 18 assists of his own. The Suns as a team had 38. From my view, though, the most encouraging line of the night belonged to Boris Diaw, who played like it was 2005-06 all over again. Shawn Marion's first quarter foul trouble gave Boris the early call, and he answered emphatically with a 7-11 shooting night (14 points), lots of hustle, and the aggressiveness Suns fans have been waiting to see from him all season. Was it just the sense that his team needed him, or did somebody have a sit-down with him? Either way, this was very nice to see.

It seemed like players on both teams took turns sharing the spotlight at times. Barbosa had a spurt in the second quarter where he looked absolutely unstoppable (as in "LB against the Lakers" unstoppable). In the third quarter, Raja Bell seemed to take issue with getting a technical called on him, and proceeded to take it out on the Raptors for the next few possessions. For the Raptors, it was T.J. Ford and Anthony Parker doing most of the damage with 27 and 22 points respectively. Jose Calderon and Rasho Nesterovic also made their presence known, particularly Nesterovic, who seemed to thrive on cringe-inducing offensive rebounds and putbacks. The Raptors gave it a good shot and played well, especially considering how short-handed they were. But in the end, it was just too much Suns firepower, as our guys scored a season high 136 points, and came away with the win for the fifteenth time this season.

Player of the Game: Steve Nash. There are a lot of guys who deserve it tonight, and some with better lines in the boxscore. But Steve sealed the deal when he had to re-enter the game in the fourth quarter after the Raptors had cut a 21-point lead down to 13. As is usually the case, the Suns started scoring again, and the rout immediately resumed.

Honorable Mentions: Leandro Barbosa, Amare Stoudemire, Grant Hill, Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, and Boris Diaw all made good cases for Player of the Game at times, prompting me to add a rare "Honorable Mention" section for this game. Brian Skinner probably would go here too had he played more than five minutes. In other words, this was a total team effort tonight.

Runner-Up: Kind of a tough call, since much like the Suns, the Raptors had different players who went on mini-spurts at different times. I'll go with T.J. Ford. 27 points and 4 assists is pretty good for a guy coming off the bench in his first game back from injury.

Grading the Game: Despite my well-documented preference for close, competitive games, scoring 136 points on the second night of a back-to-back is pretty impressive. This one's an "A".

So much for my worries
I was worried the team would come out flat and seriously lacking energy faced with the tight game in Indy, the long travel night, a somewhat ill Shawn Marion and facing a team without a few key players.

Well, so much for that!

Clearly, the team had other things in mind and LB and Bell were great from outside.

Hill was consistent and effecient.

Amare answered my question about having a 3 great offensive games in a row.

Stevie didn't score b/c he didn't need to but he hit a few early shots which has to be a huge confidence boost to everyone else knowing you've always got that guy as your closer.

And finally, someone sat Boris down and explained that he gets paid a lot of money to put the round leather ball through the metal hoop w/ the net hangin from it. Perhaps being in Candada they found someone to translate that message into French.

The defense really was poor on both sides of the floor but as long as the Rap's were willing to play our style there's no reason not to take advantage. The shots were falling. Marion was ill. Amare was trying HARD not to foul (or play D) and the result was a decent but depleted Toronto team going quietly into the cold Candadian night.

Oh, and the Suns looked like they were really having fun out there and that's great to see. Great win in my book given the situation.

Amare
I didn't realize until I read the "Cheers" in the writeup in the Republic this a.m. that Amare had no fouls last night.  Of course, the Raptors were without Bosh and they weren't playing any defense, but I didn't think it was possible for Amare to not foul!

And where was Bad Boris last night because I barely recognized the player who inhabited his body!  We all know that D'Antoni loves Boris and props him up in the media frequently, but I guess even D'Antoni got sick of Diaw being selfishly unselfish as it was hurting the team.  Hopefully Good Boris will show up on Friday night!

No D = No Fouls
I went back and watched Amare closely and he clearly wasn't playing D. On picks and screens he would jump out to stop the ball but not hard enough that he could touch the guard w/ the ball but of course he wasn't close enough to stop the entry pass which lead to several wide open Rasho dunks.

Same thing happened against Howard and JO. If you get the chance go back and watch Amare on some of those plays. You will also see his blocks and steals are down and they don't track it but I am sure his deflections as well.

Its like Amare got tired of being called out for too many fouls and maybe not getting credit for his efforts on D so he went back to scoring which makes for more fun and ESPN highlights.

I was hoping that Amare would learn to play both  solid D (not picking up too many fouls) and also dominate on the offensive end. But it seems he's given up on that and gone back.

Hopefully, this is just a short term thing....I certainly think he's capable of dominating on both ends during the same game.

You think so?
I wasn't able to watch the game, but I was happy with his D against Howard.  Not ecstatic or thrilled, but happy (when you have low expectations, it's hard to be let down).  Against Howard, he let Howard go when necessary (no one's going to stop a lob when Howard's two feet out) but he did get a handful of deflections.  He blocked Howard and he was above-adequate (but not yet good) on the pick and roll.

From my understanding of the Indiana game, O'Neal did a lot more picking and popping than picking and rolling.  If that's the way they're going to go, it's better to shut off the guard penetration and try to get back to the shooter.  Amare running at his is better than Nash (or whoever) being right there.  Thoughts?

Lobs and Dunks
If you go back and look at those Howard, and JO and even Rasho lobs and dunks you will see Amare was nowhere near them when they caught the ball right at (or high above) the rim.

Its one thing if you are manning up Howard and he spins, fades and banks off the glass. Or if JO jab steps and puts up a clean jumper. You tip your hat and run down the court. No problem.

But if you are too far from your man to deny him the ball at the rim and also to far from the ball to deny the pass then clearly you are out of position.

Watch Amare on this play. This is typically of what I am seeing:

Compare to this
Result is the same but here Skinner at least contests the dunk and makes Howard jump over him (which few other players could do).

On the second one
(I seem to have screwed up the order, but read closely and you'll see what I'm saying)

On the second one, I don't know that Skinner should've cheated so far over -- except that the defender was Nash.

I suppose it could be attributed to good dribling/ proper body position, but the attacker kept Nash between himself and Skinner so Skinner became somewhat useless as he could not stop the penetration nor get a hand on the pass.

However, it is pretty good defense against someone who's not lobbing it to Dwight Howard.

I see your point on Skinner, but I don't think you picked a fair clip for Amare.

Blame Barbosa
On that one, Barbosa slipped at the high pick-and-roll.  The guard (couldn't get his name/number) was moving free to the hoop.  I'm not sure what to do there, but Amare goes to cut off the ball.  The man with the ball, especially in the lane, is the primary threat so I don't blame that move.  The help rotation needs to come from the weak side (Hill was late -- like it would've mattered).  The break down was with Barbosa leaving Amare two guys to guard.

JSun
couldn't agree with you more, one of the suns players fell at the 3 pt line, it then became a 5 on 4. This was a poor example of Amare and the defense,

Agreed
This was the only video clip I could find and doesn't make my points well...

I am not set up right now to make my own clips from the games and examples I saw.

If you get the chance watch Amare closely on plays that end up with their big guy getting a wide open look. Rewind them. Look at them in slo-mo. Let me know what you think.

I just hope that Amare isn't giving up on his efforts to get better on D in return for fewer fouls and more offense.

srp
yep, you and I need to catch up to Sue and be able to make clips someday, next game I see I'll do what you suggest. No question, with the suns style, a slow replay catches things I'd otherwise miss. later...

I know what you're talking about
I just don't know that it's fair to use Howard as an example in general (much less on one that Barbosa slips).  My point on Skinner was he got schooled by Howard, too.

The thing is that sometimes Amare is in the right place and sometimes he's not.  I like two things about this.  First, he's in the right place more often than he's been in the past.  Second, in the past when he was out of position he made a desparation defensive play resulting in a foul -- this year he is showing a little more restraint and brains.

Mavs vs Spurs
Kind of off the subject but I just wanted to comment on the game played last night between the Mavs and Spurs. Now don't get me wrong.. I hate the Spurs and almost everyone on the team with Duncan and Ginobili being top 2 and Parker falling just behind that, but I also hate the Mavericks just as much. Although I couldn't bring myself to root for the Mavericks, I wanted the Spurs to lose even more because of what happened last season and also their place above us in the standings right now.

The game came down to the final seconds with the Spurs up by 2 and what do you know... Dirk missed the game winning 3pt shot proving once again that his name and the word clutch should never be used in the same sentence again. Reading articles about the game, I found out that he missed another 3 pointer that would have won it on Saturday night against the Hornets. HAHAHAHA!!

Things that made me happy about the game...

  1. The Mavericks lost.
  2. Dirk once again Dirked a game winner.
Things that made me angry about the game...
  1. The Spurs won.
  2. Ginobili had a big game.
  3. I forced myself to watch a game between the 2 teams that I have a passionate hate for.

Pathetic Mavs
Although I still hate the Mavs (mainly because I have to), I was rooting for them.  The Mavs don't scare me anymore, and, as some of you may know, Duncan haunts me.  After last year's playoffs and the MVP award "ceremony", I still have a large amount of pity for the team.

So, I was rooting for the Mavs.
