Game Thread: Phoenix Suns vs San Antonio Spurs

The journey begins.  Well, not really but I always wanted to start a post out that way.  In the large scheme of things, this is just another game.  It may mean something to the Suns fans and probably to most of the Suns players but the Suns really can't do anything right in the analysts' eyes.  Here's what will happen based on the scenario:

Scenario 1: The Suns pound the Spurs into the ground and win by 10+ points

The analysts' take: The Spurs were tired from a back-to-back game, the Suns had two days rest and it doesn't matter because it's the regular season.  The Suns will never be able to do it during the playoffs.

Scenario 2: The Suns win by less than 10 or less points

The analysts' take:  The Spurs were tired from a back-to-back, game, the Suns had two days rest and they could only beat the Spurs by less than 10?  First of all, it doesn't matter because it's the regular season and second, it doesn't bode well for the playoffs.

Scenario 3:  The Suns lose by less than 10 points

The analysts' take:  The Spurs were tired from a back-to-back game, the Suns had two days rest and they couldn't beat the Spurs AGAIN?  The Suns don't have a chance in the playoffs.

Scenario 4:  The Suns lose by 10+ points

The analysts' take:  The Spurs were tired from a back-to-back game, the Suns had two days rest and they got beat really bad by the Spurs.  They may as well forfeit the rest of the season.  They obviously aren't going to even make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Bottom line:  If the Suns win, it doesn't matter because it's the regular season.  If they lose, then all is doomed because they can't beat the Spurs in the regular season.

Even after all of that though, I still want the Suns to just pound the Spurs with a combination of offense and awesome defense.  Here are my keys to the game:

  1.  The Suns have to double on Duncan.  You remember how KG handled the Suns when they didn't double him?  Well, so do the Spurs.
  2.  The Suns have to play their style of game.  You can bet the Spurs will try to slow the game down, get into some half-court offensive schemes and run the 24 second shot clock all the way down.  That's fine.  Let them do it.  But after a miss or a make, the Suns better be running down the court as fast as possible.  By the 3rd quarter, Tim Duncan will be pleading for fouls and timeouts just to get his breath.
  3.  Play good defense.  It's not going to be enough to just hold Duncan to 20 points.  The Spurs have too many options to think that will be anywhere good enough.  The Suns need to play good perimiter defense as well.  And please, please, please don't let the game get close enough were Robert Horry can make a game-tying or game-winning three and make that stupid face.  I really don't want to be sick when I go to bed tonight.
That's it!  Give me your thoughts on what the Suns have to do to win tonight's game.  Analysis on the game after it's over.

Destroy Spurs
Yeah overall i feel that the Suns need to crush these punks like ants just to get themselves in a nice mindset for the rest of the season and the playoffs.  As you said Dan, a win will be a real feel good event for the fans and players and i hope to God we roll over the Spurs like a Tiger Tank.  Yet we gotta keep in mind that a loss tonight is unacceptible and would shaken the confidence of fans and players.  SO THE SUNS MUST OWN THE SPURS FOR EVERY MINUTE OF THIS GAME!!!!

Ok Analysis Now
As our esteemed host Dan pointed out the Suns have got to put huge presure on Duncan.  We cant have him dominating the paint like KG did a couple nights ago.  Another thing i've noticed after watching some Suns/Spurs games last year (yeah i know we had a very different team then) was that for some reason the Spurs perimeter game would hurt us real friggen bad throughout  those games, and God knows the Spurs got some shooters.  With that in mind we gotta ensure that pressure on Duncan wont turn into guys left open for easy 3's.  And, as Dan said as well, we gotta ensure that we keep on playing our style of ball.  Too many times have i seen our Suns in the past slowed down by the Spurs style of play, which resulted in either a blowout or a close loss.  Thus we gotta play some uber fast offense attacking from all angles, outside and inside the paint, monster dunks, fast breaks and so on.  All in all i hope for a rested Suns to crush the Spurs tonight, but we shall see.

Different thoughts
As pointed out above, it seems that the Spurs kill us from the outside every time that they beat us. I'd actually stick to single coverage on Duncan and let him get his points. It's Parker and Ginobili slashing and Barry and gang on the outside that should be our main concerns.

I understand the reluctance after KG's dominance the other night but Duncan is not Garnett. I honestly don't think he could put up 40+, even on us. He's still a phenominal player but just doesn't have that same skillset.

I know I harp on Amare from time to time, but he has got to come out with some fire tonight and establish that inside presence. Can't wait though, it oughta be a great game regardless.

Yipee
Chalk one up for the good guys!!!!  We played a great game against the Spurs thanks in part to STAT just friggen owning up the boards.  I do though worry about Bell, i read he went out of  the game with a inflamed knee.  God i hope it's nothing too big.  Well atleast we got the big W over thev Spurs.  Now it's on to another big game against the Jazz.
