Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Little Lineup Wins Big

One game isn't enough to convince me that starting Leandro Barbosa alongside Raja Bell long term is a good idea. But it worked for one night as the Suns buried both the Timberwolves and two ugly losses beneath a barage of Nash and Bell 3-pointers. By the time LB joined in on the 3-pointer fun in the fourth quarter, the game was well on its way into the win column.

Nice distribution of both playing time and scoring tonight. Boris Diaw played well off the bench. Barbosa started out slow shooting-wise, but kept the tempo up and relocated his shot later in the game. Jalen Rose scored eight points in his 13 minutes of play, and played much better defense than advertised (including a blocked shot shortly after he took the court for his first meaningful minutes in months). Steve Nash had a typical Steve Nash night (18 and 11 to go with five rebounds), while Shawn Marion had a quiet 12 and 10, and got some rest with only 28 minutes of play. Kurt Thomas helped keep the Suns within striking distance on the boards with his 9 rebounds.

Still some room for improvement, though. The Suns lost an early big lead, courtesy of a less-than-steller close to the first half. Amare Stoudemire had a rough night, getting into foul trouble, and appeared to be sulking a bit on the bench because of it. But he was all smiles by the time the game was over, and was first off the bench to cheer a block by Pat Burke in the final moments of the game. James Jones had a horrific shooting night, but the team seemed to play well when he was on the floor in spite of that. It was also disappointing to see Eric Piatkowski stapled to the bench, even in garbage time. And to think, I'd finally learned how to spell his name...

All in all, this was a nice win for the Suns to clinch their third straight Pacific Division title. The idea was to leave the Timberwolves eating desert dust, and that mission was most certainly accomplished. I'm convinced if we could ever get both Amare and Boris playing well at the same time, the Suns would be absolutely unstoppable.

It was slow at first
I was a little concerned initially. Although the Suns came out shooting, they were not making the shots. It may have been the hangover from the last two games. They even gave up the 14 point lead before half time (led by just 4), so there was a cause for concern. However, Raja got hot with the 3 point shot and it put the game out of reach.

The Suns rebounded much better than I have seen them in a long time and they were hustling for the ball the entire 48 minutes, which was nice to see.  They were outrebounded and out-FT'ed by TWolves but they more than made up for it, by scoring points.

Boris was great. He came away just shy of a double double.  May be he feels more confortable coming off the bench, or may be finally the back is showing signs of healing. Whatever the reason, I will take it.

Overall it was a good game for the Suns. They did not NEED a great game; they just needed to get back on track.

Does it bother anyone
that they took 38 friggin 3-pt shots??? They shot 53% on 2's and 42% on 3's.

That's awesome that they did so well with it last night but that sure is alot to hope for on a nightly basis.

By the way, I love how Banks didn't get any PT last night while everyone else besides Pike got into the blowout.

3 points
The Suns have to do whatever works for them on any given day. Raja had the hot hand with the 3's so it's fine that he took those. The 3's are one of the strengths of this team. They need to use it. It can be a double edged weapon but most of the times it has worked for them.

Yup
As long as they can adjust on the fly on those nights when the 3's just aren't falling. Alot of teams just keep jacking them up even when it's not working. Hopefully, we aren't one of those teams.

I have no problem with the 3's
I have no problem with the Suns taking a bunch of 3's last night. Amare wasn't getting it done inside. Minnesota was concentrating their efforts on keeping him from going off. So, the Suns made them pay from the outside. That's what you're supposed to do.

Like I said
that's absolutely wonderful as long as the shot is falling.
