Grading the Game: Suns vs. Nuggets 03/30/2007

Well, I hadn't planned to post anymore diaries until I got done with this side project that's had me bleary-eyed and grumpy for the past two weeks, but I can't pass up the opportunity to give out my first "A". Besides, I took the night off from work, so my wrists aren't aching from too much typing for once.

Click here for details on how the grading works

Nutshell recap: Technically, this was only three quarters of a good game, but I don't care. It seems like forever since we got to see genuine Suns basketball, even for part of a game. So, I'm going to forget about that ugly early deficit, and concentrate on the part that mattered most--DEFENSE!

Overall Grade: A-

Entertainment Value: A

Star Pupil: The Matrix!! Man, was it good to see Shawn Marion back! He was everywhere tonight. His box score line of 33 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks doesn't even begin to tell the story. He got in passing lanes, broke free for easy layups, and basically just filled the arena with energy (or so it seemed from my TV-based point of view). The Denver announcers wanted to credit Nash for the win--and no doubt his fire and passion was a major factor (see below)--but the game ball has to go to Shawn for this one. Has to.

Just missed the cut: Nene and Carmelo Anthony, who along with Steve Nash (2 blocks??) ROCKED on my fantasy team tonight. Way to play REALLY well without beating the Suns in the process. Thanks, guys!

MVP moment: Steve Nash got mad. After getting hammered a couple of times without a call, and then getting a call against him, Nash finally let one of the refs have it, and somehow still managed to escape without a technical. Normally, I don't like to see players do this because it usually does result in a technical, and a free point for the other team (see Nowitzki, Dirk on 03/14/07), but in this case, it seemed to fire up everyone, including the crowd. At that point of the game, they really had nothing to lose even if Nash had gotten T'ed up, so way to go, MVP!

Dunce cap goes to: The Denver announcers. Those of us who have to watch the games via League Pass were forced to endure two hours of non-stop complaining about calls and non-calls against the Nuggets. They basically complained every time the ball changed hands. I guess the Nuggets are so perfect they never commit fouls, while the Suns are such meanies they just ran right over the poor Nuggets with impunity. I wanted to puke.

Random Thoughts: When the Suns were down by 16 early in the game, I came really close to posting a prediction that the Suns were going to come back in the second half and blow the Nuggets out. I wish I had--I would look like a genius. For some reason, I just had a feeling that this was the night they would finally put their collective size 11 feet down, similar to that Sacramento game a year ago that snapped last season's team out of a late-March slump. Hopefully, this carries over to Sunday for the game against the Mavericks. I noticed both Josh Howard and Dirk played tonight, despite their sprained ankles. With the Mavericks' 7-game lead, I'm not sure if that shows heart or just stupidity at this point.

It was fun to be there!
TexSun, sorry to hear you had to hear the Denver announcers. I went through a range of emotions during the game.  Some screaming (but well behaved otherwise) Denver fans sat on my left and behind me. In the first quarter I was quite annoyed, then I became silent, worried and finally resigned to see another 20 point blowout of the Suns. Toward the end of the 2nd quarter somehow the Suns started coming back. They were still behind by 5 points at the half, but it was so much better than the 20 point deficit they had earlier. I wish I had set my VCR to tape the game so that I could look for some details later.

The second half was fun because the Suns woke up, and the fans were screaming really loud. The Denver fans around me were silent. Once the Suns tied the score at 73, we just knew they were back! After that the Nuggets players started getting nervous, making mistakes, turning the ball over, missing the shots, etc. Even Iverson missed shots. It was a complete turnaround. I hope the Suns can build on this momentum. It was about time we saw the Suns play like the Suns.

Hmm..
The Denver broadcast kept showing various Denver fans throughout the arena. I wonder if you were in any of those shots? :)

Fans
If I had set my VCR, I could have looked for myself.

I was surprised to see so many baby blue jerseys in the arena, but the Denver fans behind me wore brown (or other neutral colors) and those to the left wore white jerseys with a small logo, etc. so they were not very noticeable. I was surprised to see so many empty seats in the arena. I hope the Suns fans have not given up on them.

Matrix was great, but....
...What happened to STAT? He got in foul trouble but sometimes he scores a lot of points before that. He barely got in double figures, toward the end of the game.

Why can't the Suns have both STAT and Marion play great at the same time? It did not matter last night since the Suns won big, but against Dallas and SA the Suns have to be firing all six cylinders (Nash, Marion, STAT, Diaw, Raja, LB)- actually 8 cylinders (Junior and KT).

I think last night the crowd was a big part of the Suns' win. Raja Bell even thanked the 'sixth man' during the post game interview.

Heart or stupidity?
TexSun, you brought up this point about Dirk and Howard. I think it was neither heart nor stupidity. If they felt that they could play with the injury without aggravating it, they would play. Athletes are used to playing with injuries (I don't know if you are an athlete; if you are, my apologies). So I am not surprised. I think the game was close, so they must have felt that both of these players were needed. So unless the injury was bad, they would play, which they did.

Injuries
I do play sports, but just for fun. However, I have two bad knees and a back that's definitely seen better days. Therefore, whenever I play, O am always "playing hurt" in a manner of speaking. That's probably why I have an enormous amount of respect for guys that play through pain. HOWEVER... If I were a 7-foot All-Star NBA player who had a history of ankle problems, and my team was playing New York (which they should be able to beat without me), and my team had a 7-game lead ahead of all other teams in the league, with it being less than a month before playoffs, in all honesty, I would probably take the night off. In fact, I would probably expect my coach to insist I take the night off. But maybe "stupidity" was too harsh a word.
