Suns Take Game 1
The Lakers did EVERYTHING they wanted to do. Kobe Bryant scored 39 points. The Suns shot under 43 percent from the field. They shot 26.1% from the three point line. They kept the Suns under 100 points.
And despite all of that, they weren't good enough to beat the Phoenix Suns. That's got to hurt. It's REALLY got to hurt. What else can they do to stop the Suns? What happens when the Suns' shot is on in the next game and they shoot over 47% from the field and 40% from the three-point line? What happens when Raja Bell actually starts shooting well?
Leandro Barbosa showed why he is the top candidate for the 6th man of the year award today. He scored 26 points on 10-22 shooting. He made 4-7 free throws. He had 5 rebounds. But more than any of that, he brought the energy that the Suns needed. When it seemed like the team and the crowd were starting to doubt themselves, the Brazilian Blur turned on the speed and brought back the swagger. The play of the game - in my mind - was when LB got the ball at about half court, saw three Lakers defending the basket and still turned on the speed to run past Smush Parker. Parker did the only thing he could do by grabbing Barbosa's arm but LB made the shot and got the free throw. At that point, there was no looking back.
Amare Stoudemire had an awesome game as well. He scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds. He brought some good defense stops when he needed to. It's quite a difference seeing STAT guarding Kwame Brown this year than watching Diaw guard Brown last year. Brown looked a little out of sorts and Amare did a good job of keeping Brown off of his game.
Shawn Marion had an amazing game on the rebounding end. He had 16 rebounds, shot 6-13 from the field and had 16 points. For those people who say that Shawn doesn't show up for the playoffs, they won't be able to say anything after this game. All that being said, if I were the Lakers I would try to exploit the Odom/Marion matchup. Marion does as good a job as anyone on the Suns can do on Odom but Shawn is 3 inches shorter than Odom is and although their bios say they weight the same, Odom looks a lot bigger. Obviously, Kobe scoring all the points doesn't work (he scored nearly half of the entire team's points) so if I were the coach and wanted to try something different, that's what I would try. I don't think it will work but I don't know that anything will work really.
Like I said at the beginning, it seemed like the Lakers played exactly the game they wanted to play and they still couldn't pull of the game. If I were a Lakers fan, I would be a bit worried.
What are your thoughts on the game? What could the Suns have done better? Could the Lakers have played any better than they did? Do the Suns need to be worried at all?
The next game is Tuesday at 10:30 EST/7:30 PST.

Suns game 1
most of the missed shots weren't closely contested. Just off to a slow start, and Kobe does what he does.
That being said, I'd be worried if I was a Lakers fan, the Suns poor shooting was a 1 out of 10 or less type of thing. During the rest of the series, shooting like the Suns can, we should be sitting on large leads.
But you have to hand it to the Suns for cranking up the defense during the second half. To me, I was especially impressed with Trix and all he normally does, STAT and his dive to get a lost ball and pass it back towards the basket. And Barbosa for using his speed. I think the Suns 3 pt shots weren't dropping, so they started going after the basket. Thank God they didn't keep shooting 3's at the same pace as the beginning. One play, where Diaw had a 15-18 footer, instead he faked and drove to the basket for a little 3-4 ft shot which of course he made. Also the Defense from the Suns at the end, wow! 2-3 guys on Kobe, I think he missed 8 shots in a row there at the end.
Awesome, go Suns. Glad the Suns were down for half the game or more. This should help the Suns go into the next game realizing they need to take the Lakers seriously, yes they can sweep the Lakers, but the Suns need to be firing on all cylinders just to get ready for the Spurs/Nuggets(we can always hope)
I hope all the Suns fans realize G.S. has beat the Mavs in 2 games this year (3rd game didn't count...all starters were rested) and might actually test the Mavs tonight, or at least beat them 2-3 times to get the Mavs tired. We'll see!
Personally, I think the Spurs (especially the way they've been playing) will be the toughest opponent for the Suns, even harder than the Mavs and Pistons.

Woopei!!!
OMFG LB played awesome!@!!@@!@!@@!@! If he keeps playing like this I like our playoff chances very much!@!!!@!@! Yeah thedamned lakers slowed us down but in the end they couldnt keeep up there offense and our defense and offense finally kicked in. Great win for our boys, coming back from behind and taking charge.
I'm convinced that once our shots start falling (cause we had lots of open looks) we'll bitch slap these punks in 4 games.
As far as what we need to do to improve.....Well first we need to abuse them inside more. This game I saw the Suns settling for way too many outside shots. Thats ok when we're shooting ok, but on a nnight like tonight that is not cool. Pound the the ball inside more with the pick and roll and we'll hurt em bad. Other than that we need to improved our interior deffense. Too many times I say Lakers driving in the lane or putting back shots. We cant let that happen. I think next game we'll bring in Kurt more often to close things up inside and thus make Kobe work that much harder from outside
Overall it was a great convincing win that i'm sure our boys will learn from and that i'm sure will get in the heads of the Lakers.

I was worried too
However, in the 4th Q the Suns got the job done. May be they just had playoff jitters in the first half. They had not played since last Tues. Their shooting, rebounding, FT, and TO were woeful. The Lakers seemed to do nothing wrong. It all changed when the Brazilian Blur sped past the Lakers. His teammates woke up.

Or...
I had heard that the Lakers fans are the worst (I still think nobody can beat the Detroit fans in being obnoxious). One of them sat 2 seats away from me, and was making a fool of himself. It all seemed to be in jest, however. Actually his friend/companion was a Suns fan and he sat next to me, so I was OK. Other than that, the Lakers fans did not bother us.

That worried me
I don't mean that I want the Suns to take on the Spurs. SA has troubled the Suns for years. It's a pick your poison type situation.

Your right but...
Just saw Dallas lose to Washington, yes!!! This Davis guard is really good, they play run and gun basketball also, a lot of fun. I think on the season, the Suns have much better shooters than G.S. and L.A., but G.S. really has a bunch of hustle re bounders.... this worries me.
I know it's early, and I still think Mavs and Spurs will win their current series, but it's weird to see them lose.

Back to Suns game
1.Rebound better
2.Shoot better- overall
3.Make the FT's (they missed a lot of those today; two misses by LB, one by Boris)
4.Boris needs to contribute more points
5.Improve 3 point shooting
6.Now that they have the lead, they cannot let the Lakers get back into the series. In other words, play with the intensity needed to win.
What could the Lakers have done better?
They had a great game plan. The only flaw was they were not using ALL of their players. Excessive dependence on Kobe got him tired in the 4th quarter. That was when the Suns started playing better defense. If I were Jackson, I would get more team mebers involved and not let the burden fall on Kobe alone. When the opponent shuts down Kobe, they shut down the Lakers.
