Amare calls Bowen and Ginoboli dirty players

Editor's Note: I clicked on this link very warily because it just seemed far fetched that Bowen would actually do that in a game. But after reading Amare's comments and seeing the replay, I think this is important enough to bring to the front page to get more reaction. What do you think about this?

Stoudemire says Bowen tried to injure him

Wow, this is some juicy stuff. I'm looking for the YouTube video. I'm sure we're going to hear a lot about this over the next 2-5 days. I think this will motivate both teams, but should help force the refs to look more closely at the Spurs. I'm off to go eat dinner, I love it. (Added later, important to note I don't love that this happened, I do love that we have the means to pass to video around to each other so easily)

wow, just finished article didn't see this before
In March of 2006, Bowen was fined $10,000 by the NBA for kicking Seattle's Ray Allen in the back.

Wow, this is bad!

by jasonsuns1 on May 10, 2007 5:33 PM MDT   0 recs

bowen videos similar stuff

Link Carter and Bowen

Not so good

Jalen rose comments on Bowen

I know some people might say, what about Raja Bell and his clothesline on Kobe, well, yes that was stupid but it was a reaction from getting hit in the groin by Kobe play after play, Bowen's stuff is not a reaction.

by jasonsuns1 on May 10, 2007 6:49 PM MDT   0 recs

Raja
Raja's offense was a one time thing. He never did that again. It was done in the heat of the moment. Bowen's sounds like a habit. Perhaps he needs a suspension from at least one game to clean up his act. Instead he gets elected to the all defensive first team. Is there a greater injustice?

by Vash01 on May 10, 2007 10:29 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I moved this to the front page
I think this is an important issue.  We have a guy that is intentionally trying to injure people.  I just don't see how you can look at it any other way.  They suspended Kobe Bryant for what was considered a dirty play with flailing his arms.  It's hard to see exactly what happened on a YouTube video but the NBA has HD and I'm sure has big screens and if they review this and see that it was a dirty play and he meant to do something to Amare, I have no doubt that they will suspend Bowen.

Check out all of the videos that JasonSuns1 has posted.  And then check out the other videos that are related.

I've never really watched any of these videos before but after seeing them all, I don't see how you can say what Bowen did was an accident.  You can say that "undercutting" someone was an accident.  You can say that what he did to Vince Carter may have been an accident (although I don't believe it).  But there is absolutely NO WAY you can say what Bowen did to Amare was.

I'm curious to see what others thing - hence, moving the article to the main page.

So now....
...does everyone have a little more sympathy for my "I can't stand Bruce Bowen" comment that got widely panned on this board last week? :)

by TexSUN on May 10, 2007 10:18 PM MDT   0 recs

TexSUN posted a few earlier as well
... and I think this one she found is one of the most flagrant plays I have ever seen in the NBA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAakQjpFibg

He should be suspended for trying to injure Amare... and I don't know what happened to Bowen after the Bruce Lee kick to the face but let's suspend him for that one too while we're at... and for kicking Ray Allen in the back... and for throwing Carter to the ground... and for sticking his feet under players while in the air.  This stuff isn't even funny.  He's a danger to everyone.  Get rid of him.

by Travis on May 10, 2007 10:32 PM MDT   0 recs

THE worst!
This is the worst I have ever seen. A jump kick to the head/face?  Was he suspended for at least one game after that? If not, there is no justice in the NBA.

by Vash01 on May 10, 2007 10:45 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

wow, thanks for the video link
I always just assumed he was a great defensive player (Bowen) just because everyone said so, but after watching the Spurs more closely, and seeing a  bunch of youtube video, wow, what a sad thing to have a guy in the league like that. I don't think 1 game is enough, if players get 5 game suspensions for going into the stands, this should be 5 games at least! Also, on my main diary, I noticed I said I love it. What I meant by this, I don't love that this happened, but I do love that we have youtube so we can all see it.

by jasonsuns1 on May 10, 2007 11:04 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

$7,500
... I looked it up for you guys, he paid $7500 to the NBA way back in 2002 for the jump kick to Szczerbiak's face: http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2002/0303/1344744.html

Kicking Ray Allen in the back in 2006 cost him $10,000: http://cbs.sportsline.com/nba/story/9344012/rss

I don't know that he's been suspended for this nonsense yet.  Let's hope he drops $15,000 or more for pulling the old "sweep the leg" move on Amare. Cobra Kai!

by Travis on May 10, 2007 11:48 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Alright, that settles it!
I'm gonna watch "The Outsiders".

I'd watch "The Karate Kid", but in terms of TEAM play, it's just not the same...but both star Ralph Macchio, so, hey....all good.

Ralphy
Funny how a guy can go from the Outsiders, to Karate Kid, to My Cousin Vinny and not age more than a few months.  He's an eternal thirteen year old.

by Travis on May 11, 2007 2:41 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Yup - you were right TexSun
I for one had always just seen him as a "tough defender" who, like Raja or KT plays up on you and gets physical. Which is fine when its your guy doing it but annoying when its the other guy.

But this does change my mind on Bowen. Its one thing to get up in a guy's chest but the leg sweep? The flying kick the face? The multiple times when guys have magically landed on him?

This guy really does take "dirty" to another level.

Btw, there's another clip they are running on ESPN from game 2 where Bowen sticks his leg out with Amare coming down the lane but Amare jumped before he was tripped.

ESPN CLIP
hey, is this clip online, or on espn tv. If it's online, can you pass me the link, I'd be curious to see it,

thanks

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 11:09 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

They played it
during the NBA Fastbreak. About 11 minutes into the show. They showed 2 examples actually and both times you see Bowen stick his foot out.

I will try and make a clip and youtube it.

by Phoenix Stan on May 11, 2007 11:28 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

thanks
If your too busy, don't worry about it, but if you do have the time, I'm sure it'll be very appreciated, I'll add the link to the front page entry.

thanks!

I'm guessing from what TexSun (I think) said, that Stu Jackson already reviewed the tape and isn't going to do anything. Sadly, only if Amare fell to the floor screaming would've anything been done. But Amare has had Technical calls problems, and I think is very sensitive towards getting any more. I think less and less of David Stern and Stu Jackson every time one of these things is ignored!

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 11:32 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

ESPN
was also showing one where Steve Nash fell down at Bowen's feet and he "accidentally" kicked Steve in the head.

by Dan on May 11, 2007 12:03 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

It would a great
to go through the last two games and make a Bowen's Greatest Hits clip.

It would take watching both games only looking at Bowen and that's time consuming.

If we divided up the games by quarters so that each person watched one or two quarters of the games and made a note of each incident like this:

Bowen tries to Trip Amare: Q3 8:03

I could put them all together into one video clip

by Phoenix Stan on May 11, 2007 12:13 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

great idea
I'll buy the games for $2.99 and go through whatever part(s) you want limit to 1 or 2 (I work 2 jobs). I was planning on buying the games anyways

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 12:26 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Fine not enough
I think some of Bowen's offenses deserved suspensions- like the kick to the face/head. Fines of $7500 or $10000 are not enough when the risk to someone else's career is taken into account. Bowen pays the fine then he goes about his ways of kicking his opponents.

The league needs to take stronger actions toward repeat offenders of this kind.

by Vash01 on May 11, 2007 12:55 AM MDT   0 recs

couldn't agree with you more
Let's hope the spotlight of the playoffs helps this idea of more than a fine.

Ladies and Gentlemen, remember the axiom
"The Spurs are A GREAT DEFENSIVE TEAM".

My bet is Amare is gonna get fined for bitching.

Mike Finger has something to say
...and by his picture, I know where that Finger's been...

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/columnists/mfinger/stories/MYSA051107.01D.COL.BKNfinger.spurs.359 0c75.html

This guy's the 13th Spur...he's whinier than than a good Merlot.

After viewing the clip of Bowen's kick on YouTube -- which already boasts almost as many Bruce Bowen "cheap shot" videos as it does of animals playing musical instruments -- it's understandable why Stoudemire might be a bit perturbed

Wow, that's some pretty clever shit, Mike.  The fact you've spent that much time searching "YouTube" and watching "animals playing musical instruments" must impact not only your career, but your "family life":

Say high to "Jessie" for me, and remind "her" she still owes me that 40% cut from last week.

Sure, Stoudemire isn't the first to complain about Bowen's defensive tactics. But run down the list of the most vocal critics: Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Isiah Thomas, Flip Saunders and Cuttino Mobley.

What do they have in common? Losing records against the Spurs, and zero playoff series victories against Bowen

Oh, that's a great argument.  "OH, WELL, THEY'RE ALL LOSERS, SO IT MUST NOT BE TRUE"...blindly labeling folk as such is the last refuge from reality.

Phil Jackson (who has a winning record against both the Spurs at least one playoff series victory over Bowen) said a little somethin' somethin' about Bowen, but hey, it doesn't fit in Finger's asshole, does it?

Anyways, I need another drink...read the article.

I'd say this guy and Phil Coro should get together for some Afternoon Delight, but the offspring would kill the NBA, sports reporting, as we know it, turning into some sickass version of itself, a la "Idiocracy":

BS
I thought it was BS to say Suns are acting like victims after their big win. I think Amare has made the public aware of what the referees have been conveniently ignoring- Bowen's dirty play in that game. It could have caused a serious injury and there is a history of injured players that have spoken against Bowen. This should be a warning to Bowen and the Spurs- beat us playing clean basketball, or live with the defeat.

by Vash01 on May 11, 2007 9:48 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Greg Anthony/SportsCenter
So I was watching SportsCenter last night and they were talking about this.  They asked Greg Anthony what he thought.  He basically went on and on about how Bruce Bowen wasn't a dirty player, that he just plays good defense and that Amare was a whiner.  The interesting thing was while he was saying all of this, they showed tons of video - just not the one of Bowen kicking Amare.

Also, what in the world is a punk like Greg Anthony talking about dirty plays?  Remember back in 1993 when Greg Anthony came off the bench (in street clothes no less) and sucker-punched Kevin Johnson at about halfcourt?  He got suspended five games and fined $20,500.  And he's talking about who is dirty and who isn't?  Uh, yeah, ok Greg.  You're really credible!

by Dan on May 11, 2007 8:05 AM MDT   0 recs

Thugs don't SNITCH!
wink

Anytime I hear the words "great defense", either prefaced or conjoined (or even supplanted) with the words "THAT'S playoff basketball", the statement is suspect.

At least the Suns Guards have the balls to take a REAL charge, in November or in June.

by DrStrom on May 11, 2007 8:46 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Saw that too
I had the same thought. Here's Greg Anthony talking about playing physical and getting up on a guy at the same time they are showing this cheap shoot to Amare while his back is turned.

Punk ass.

by Phoenix Stan on May 11, 2007 9:42 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

No action coming from the league
According to this, the league is taking no action against Bowen for the kick. I guess they agree with Greg Anthony--it's just good old-fashioned playoff-style defense, apparently.
The league is not going to sanction Bruce Bownen in any way for the kick at the back of Amare Stoudemire's leg. Stoudemire did not get worked up until he saw the replay on SportsCenter last night and reviewed it repeatedly. Suns people had a mixed reaction to the incident. Some thought it was no big deal. Some thought it was another sketchy Bowen tactic but are more concerned with some hacking on Steve Nash.

by TexSUN on May 11, 2007 8:54 AM MDT   0 recs

Tex, you know better
It's Coro....he can't even properly spell "Bowen" (and if he tried for the enunciaation of 'Bow-nen', it'd be funny....but I don't think he did).

In fact, after reading the rest of his crap segment, I'm sure it's a mistake on his part....guy obviously has no editor.

Way to rule a good joke with your reputation for incompetence, Coro.  Next time, why don't you just spell it on your Lite-Brite?

by DrStrom on May 11, 2007 9:40 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually...
I saw the same thing on East Valley Tribune too.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that Stu Jackson, NBA senior executive vice president for basketball operations, has reviewed videotape of the play and determined that no disciplinary action against Bowen was warranted.

Wouldn't be surprised if the refs call the game closer now, though. But I'm not sure that really benefits the Suns, although it might keep someone from getting injured I guess.

by TexSUN on May 11, 2007 9:52 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

refs
I think the refs will pay closer attention to the game and it could actually hurt the Suns because even unintentional plays that may be dangerous to the other team's player could be called flagrant.

I also believe that had this been the regular season, Bowen would have been suspended for a game. The NBA does not want to influence the outcome of a playoff series by suspending a starter on a team they love. NOw if it was Amare, they would have no hesitation in suspending him. Raja did get suspended last year.

I expect Bowen to be just a bit careful in game 3, and not stick out his leg under a player.

by Vash01 on May 11, 2007 10:05 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Unless they call a fair game, it ESPECIALLY screws
the Suns.

Now the Spurs further believe the hype about "Defense" and they can get away with whatever they want.

These are the moments I hate integrity, because it'd be so much easier to start Pat Burke.  On the tip, he'd smash the shit out of Duncan and make him fall.
It wouldn't matter if there was a lane violation, or the Spurs retrieved the ball:  Duncan would GET THE POINT THAT THE SUNS AREN'T FUCKING AROUND, AND WILL LAY HIM OUT EVERY TIME HE TRIES TO GET INTO THE PAINT.

by DrStrom on May 11, 2007 10:55 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

league
I am disappointed, but it was wrong of me to even expect the NBA to do something about its favorite team.

Suns have no choice but to simply blow the Spurs out of the water again.  It's the only way to stop these blind media people. They will talk about how great the Suns are instead of 'playoff basketball'.

GO SUNS!

Stu Jackson
NBA guy who makes the calls on players and actions.
I thought it was funny that the article's purpose was to mention that this year the nba and refs were trying to cut down on players complaining, and right there at the top is a picture of one of the greatest players and complainers, Tim Duncan.

NBA article

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 11:37 AM MDT   0 recs

What a joke!
The Spurs are among the biggest whiners in the NBA. Somehow their complaining is ignored. Some other teams get T's and ejections for doing less than what some of the Spurs do. The Spurs are a great team and I don't have a problem with them winning titles in the past, but for the integrity of the game Stern needs to make sure that same rules apply to all teams, whether they are the champs or 0-82.

by Vash01 on May 11, 2007 1:27 PM MDT   0 recs

refs respecting "best defensive team"
yeah i said this at the end of the lakers series, the suns will suffer from many no-calls simply because the refs respect the myth of "best defensive team".  sad part is, these blatant no-calls further fuel the myth, so its really and endless cycle.

2 major trends will emerge from STAT's comments, 1) refs step up and pay more attention to the spurs "defense" and the suns benefit because duncan will actually be called for his 17 fouls a game...

or

2) refs pay attention to 'all' calls and start getting everyone in foul trouble early for questionable at best calls.  this will hurt the suns because likely by the second half the refs will go back to their old ways (due to the game being boring) and then we will already be in foul trouble.

lets hope 1 is the course they take.  we need a game 3 win more than we needed a game 2 win, and we need to play like it! we have to go back to phx at the very least 2-2 but better if we can be 3-1 and close out this hard series fast since it looks like the jazz will be well rested by then.

Perfunctories

Joe, good to see you.  We got any other folk from #suns that came yonder, possibly under different nicknames?

Opinion:

If there's one thing Stern has proven, it's that he likes to keep business "in house"...and that's just not working.

The only thing that will come of this ordeal is bulletin-board material for the Slurs, and whomever is covering ABC for Game 3 will make a big deal about it:

"HAHAHA AMARE IS DIRTY LOOK AT THAT PICTURE THEY MADE WITH DOO-DOO ON HIM HAHAHA"

Bowen tries to trip Amare
I finally figured out all the technology and was able to put together a clip showing Bowen trying to trip Amare in the 3rd qtr. It is uploading to YouTube now. I will make a diary post as soon as its done.

THANKS FOR DOING THIS
If it bothers you that I put in the front, I'll take it off, I mentioned you made the video twice. Just figured since it's the first page people see, great job on it. You really have to look for this one, boy are they sneaky cheats (Bowen, Ginobili)

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 3:54 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

no problem
You really do have to be staring at this feet. I am going to watch a few minute of game play and just stare at Bowens feet and see how he plays

I already found two
times in the 1st quarter where Suns hit the floor and you can see Bowens feet just happened to be in the way...I am going to spend some more time on this.

I will start w/ game 2 1st half. If anyone wants to watch other parts of the game or game 1 and logs "incidents" involving Bowen's feet just post what you find and I will put together a Greatest Trips video clip

Way off topic but I'm too lazy to start a thread
If the Suns and GSW end up in the conference finals somehow, then the Suns had better be CERTAIN not to drop a game to GSW at home. These guys are a totally different team in Oakland, apparently. They just put up a 40-point quarter, and lead the Jazz 70-49 at the half. WOW.....

by TexSUN on May 11, 2007 8:14 PM MDT   0 recs

yep
I'm watching it also, and after seeing this half, it's easy to think about G.S. coming back in this series.

by jasonsuns1 on May 11, 2007 8:23 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

GS
I missed most of the game because I was out, but I watched the last few minutes of the game. I was thrilled by the thrashing GSW gave the Jazz.

The Warriors have one of the worst on-road records among winning teams. I hope they can tie the series after game 4, then go back to SLC and win there. It can be done because they were in a position to win in both games in SLC.

I still think the Suns can beat the Warriors even in their charmed place.  The Suns are one of the few teams that can play great basketball at that pace, for 48 minutes.

The only roadblock - and a HUGE one- in our way is SA.

parker and barbosa

Link to video that shows parker fall

I don't like the narration, definitely spurs biased, but the video on parker's fall shows something i missed before. Parker is jumping backwards when he shoots, he caused that fall to happen my not jumping straight up. I know Nash and others do this also, the fade away while jumping back, but its dangerous and the defender (barbosa) was in no way responsible for someone jumping back like that. Parker has no cause to complain, and neither did nash with the nose, and that's why they didn't complain about the
other team! Amare's situation is different.

by jasonsuns1 on May 12, 2007 1:33 PM MDT   0 recs

Totally agree
I watched this play several times. Barbosa was divinging back to where he thought the loose ball might be and Parker had already grabbed it and put up the fade-away. It shouldn't have even been a foul but its not a horrible call in the scheme of things.

No way it was intentional though. And besides. We are talking about Barbosa not Bruce Lee Bowen.

by Phoenix Stan on May 12, 2007 2:01 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

The incident at the very end of this video
If you look the incident at the very end of the video where they should Amare and Bowen falling you will see that Bowen jumped back and put a leg under Amare and Amare tripped over him. Bowen caused that contact. What does it say that they have to use that clip to make their point?
