Bell Suggests Toughness

An article at AZCentral.com is quoting Raja Bell as saying the Suns need to toughen up.  I agree with him.  Some interesting quotes:

"Look, you get caught up in that (throwing elbows) with the Spurs and you will lose. They're good at it. As much as everyone would like to spin it and have us out there fighting (Monday night), you can't do that. I hope guys understand that's not the answer."

"We have a game plan.  They're doing certain things; we've designed a defense to counter. We go over it for two days. I don't know if we're tired or what the situation is, but we have to be mentally tough enough to execute. When we don't, Timmy (Duncan) will have 30 points and 20 rebounds and Manu will get 24 and we'll lose. But when we do it, they can't beat us."

"We've been in the newspapers and people have been making a big deal about that.  I'm sure (the Spurs) are having a real good time with it, so it's time to stop talking and say, 'Hey, let's go play.'"

And my favorite quote, although it comes from Kurt Thomas:

"If you feel you need to throw an elbow, then you need to throw an elbow.  But it's more about putting a body on their body, boxing out and not allowing them to just walk in and get easy shots."

And you know what?  I agree.  We're complaining too much as Suns fans.  We're sounding like Dallas fans.  I don't know about you but I certainly don't want to be associated with Dallas fans.

So let's buck up, Suns fans!  Let's cheer our team on, not complain and toughen up as fans.  We can do this guys!  The Suns can do this!  So from this thread forward through the rest of the series, I don't want to say I'm banning all pessimistic talk but I don't want to see a lot of blaming the Spurs for the losses.  Let's figure out what we would do if we were the coaches of the Suns.  How can the Suns win the game on Monday?

COME ON GUYS!!  LET'S CHEER OUR TEAM TO VICTORY!!

THANK YOU!
I was getting tired of all the griping about refs too. The Suns just need to concentrate on playing the very best they can, and if turns out not to be good enough, then so be it.

Uh oh?
I certainly hope there's nothing to this:
Coach Mike D'Antoni targeted 100 points before the series began. His team has reached that mark in all three games, but it has only one victory to show for it. The Suns probably lose speed with Kurt Thomas starting -- although Thomas claims he isn't as slow as people think. Will D'Antoni stick with that lineup? Thomas was supposed to help slow Duncan and help keep Amare Stoudemire out of foul trouble. Neither happened in Game 3. Perhaps starting Leandro Barbosa is the answer. D'Antoni needs to find a way to kickstart the Sixth Man winner. He took only six shots in 28 minutes Saturday, scoring six points.

Please no starting LB against the Spurs. Been there, tried that, didn't work. PLEASE don't try that again, Coach. PLEASE. I'm begging you. :)

I'm guessing this is just Doug Haller's wild speculation, not anything that's being seriously considered. At least I hope that's all it is.

by TexSUN on May 13, 2007 9:25 PM MDT reply actions

If it's Haller, it's speculation
Sorry, I really hope he's not reading this because I don't want to offend him but it seems like a lot of the stuff he writes is just speculation.  Considering he's not giving any type of source for the speculation, I'm guessing it's just a speculation.

looking for changes where they shouldn't
It's about 3 things to me, not barbosa starting instead of thomas.
  1. Nash shooting like he normally does
  2. Amare getting 38-40 minutes and scoring like he normally does
  3. The bell comment, execute on defense
I think we're still in this, GO SUNS!!

by jasonsuns1 on May 13, 2007 11:31 PM MDT up reply actions

That's it
I agree completely... Nash needs to be his normal self... nothing exceptional, just a normal game assuming everyone else does their part.

Amare needs to be in the game... hell, another 10 minutes in the game and he would have had another 10 points going by his numbers.

Overall, they just need to play Suns basketball and contain Manu and Parker on defense but with that added desperation and intensity that they usually bring when they're coming from behind.

I'd also add that we need to attack Duncan.  Send some guys at him and force some calls... a few early calls on him, if that's at all possible and the entire game changes in the Suns favor.  This is basically what they're doing to Amare... why not attack the Big Boring with some of our perimeter guys, Bell, Nash, Marion and force the refs to call a fair game. I expect to see Rambo Nash out there ready to take this game like the MVP that he is.

I'm also expecting a 15-20 point win by the Suns which makes this a tied series going home.  If they can make this work tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised if they win the next two straight.

Go Suns!
I've still only seen some of the 4th quarter of the game and might not watch the entire game as it might just make me mad, soooooo, instead I think I will concentrate like Steve Nash says during timeouts on everyone hitting on all cylinders tomorrow night and playing their best, as we know they are certainly capable of beating and/or blowing out the Spurs like they did in Game 2!

Bowen under investigation
According to ESPN, the league is going to investigate the knee to the groin incident (btw, did anybody YouTube this yet?). Maybe some good will come out of Amare's comments after all.
An NBA spokesman confirmed Sunday night that Bowen's third-quarter knee to the groin of Suns guard Steve Nash in Saturday's Game 3 is under review for possible punishment.

Nash declined after Saturday's game and again Sunday to voice any public displeasure with Bowen's physical play. But the league decided anyway to conduct a full investigation into this incident after declining to do so when Bowen was accused of intentionally kicking Amare Stoudemire in Game 2.

I am going to put a video together before noon of the knee.

Wow
Of all of the things to be investigating, this surprises me.  I guess that's what happens when you go after the MVP.

by Dan @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 13, 2007 11:07 PM MDT up reply actions

My guess is...
...it's because Amare said something. Then again, the league has been pretty strict on groin kicks (didn't Raja Bell get fined or suspended earlier this year for one that didn't even connect?). Oddly enough, they didn't do anything to Ginobili for the one on Amare, but seems like overall, the league tends to come down pretty hard on kicks to the groin.

by TexSUN on May 13, 2007 11:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Suspension?
I am not sure I want Bowen to get suspended. My gut says that we are better off beating them at full strength but since we are down a game you can't take a gift suspension in the mouth.

Of course, I think he should be suspended b/c this is his pattern of dirty play and he needed to be punished for it.

Speaking of suspensions, I wonder if Baron Davis is going to get a game for that elbow to Fisher's ear?

by Seth Pollack on May 14, 2007 9:35 AM MDT up reply actions

No suspension please!
It will only fire up the Spurs if Bowen gets suspended. They are never short handed.

I would like to see him fined, however. It will send him a message to be careful. If the NBA lets this slide, he will become even more confident and do it (and worse) multiple times.

A hefty fine will be the best solution.

by Vash01 @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 14, 2007 12:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Raja
Bell was suspended for a kick to the groin against Toronto I think. He said it was unintentional but the league suspended him anyway. Unfortunately Amare does not get those calls. Manu did kick him in the groin and they called a foul on Amare!

Steve Nash is a different story though. He may not always get the calls, and he did not against SA on Saturday, but at least the NBA is reviewing this. I doubt that anything will be done to Bowen. May be a nominal fine, at the most. If they suspend him for a game, it will be worse for the Suns because it will fire up the Spurs. I would rather catch them overconfident and careless.

The Spurs must feel very confident that the officials won't call fouls against them, or Bowen would have been more careful.

Game 4 will be do or die for the Suns. It's all about execution. The team with the most intensity, focus and execution will win the game, regardless of the officiating.

I have no hopes for the Suns at all. Looking ahead to next season.

by Vash01 @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 13, 2007 11:45 PM MDT reply actions

no!
There is no next season!  This is it!  I mean, we're going to have to come to the conclusion as Suns fans, that this in all likelihood is the best team we've EVER had.  I bitch about Marion a lot, but the thought of losing him is not something I'm looking forward to.  Nash will be one year older with no viable backup in the mix (yet).

I think this is it.  The 92-93 made the finals.  The Suns didn't make it to the 3rd round again UNTIL Nash redux.

I hope (and really, I know) the players feel the same.

in response
Who knows... could be the mvp is in the duncan status, could be it that the high profile of the game and amare's comments helped, could be bowens wonderful history. But....

did anyone see the G.S. Utah game, I'm referring to the Baron Davis elbowing and knocking down Derek Fisher. If you haven't seen it, believe me, it's worth looking at. A lot of people have been praising Davis this playoffs, I hear someone say he's the mvp of the playoffs every other day, this was an act of frustration and his elbow hit fisher's head! I'm thinking there will be a suspension for this, just thought I'd throw it out there. I have much less respect for Davis now. Even Bell, the first example Laker fans, and others bring up with us Suns, the Kobe clothesline, it was in response to being hit in the face or groin again ad again by Kobe. I personally feel Bell is like Thomas, they're the 2 people on our team who will be the reason or influence, when we come back and beat the spurs Monday.

GSW & Utah
Since I was rooting for GSW, I was disappointed that they lost at home. They are down 1-3 and pretty much out of it. Utah will win the next game at home and advance to the WCF.

I watched only the 4th Q and a part of the 3rd. I did see when Fisher was down on the floor, but they did not have a replay of that play, so it is hard to tell if it was deliberate or not. The officials did not call a foul on Davis, so I guess it was incidental contact. Without a tape of it, it is hard to draw any conclusions.

Toward the end of the game though the Warriors appeared tired and frustrated. In the last few minutes they missed key shots and FT's (Baron missed both of his), they made bad decisions (Barnes took a 3-point shot that was not needed). It looked like they were tired. That worries me. If the Suns make it to the WCF, they will be battling Utah. Those guys are big, they have a deep bench and Boozer is a monster. I think if any team matches up with SA it's the Jazz. They have not always executed, but if they do like they did tonight, they could be deadly for any team, including the Spurs.

by Vash01 @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 13, 2007 11:58 PM MDT reply actions

yep
I agree, I think Utah has it won, I did see 3 replays, and it was deliberate! Suspension is coming, my guess.... When you see the video, you'll understand why I brought it up, this was worse than anything yet in the playoffs, easily.

by jasonsuns1 on May 14, 2007 12:02 AM MDT up reply actions

Nice...
I'm still pulling for Golden State but if the Jazzercise make it to the WCF, I'll have the satisfaction of being surrounded by Utards here in Utah (yes, that is the correct term for a Jazz fan, I think).  I think they'll be in for a tough time if we can fight through the Spurs....

As for their game tonight, it seemed the Jazz were down most of the time and just fought back at the end of every quarter, usually thanks to their only veteran, Fisher.  They were fumbling the ball all over the court until Fisher pulled them together and sparked the finish.  They still look too sloppy to me to beat San Antonio or Phoenix.  Of course much of that sloppiness is due to the swarming defense of the Warriors.

by Trvs on May 14, 2007 1:07 AM MDT up reply actions

Utah is scaring me
I am thinking too far ahead; the Suns need to get past SA first.

Utah is getting it done. At times they have played poorly but they have fought back each time (down 0-2 to Houston) and got it done (once in OT). That is winner. They have beaten the Suns 3 times in close games. They know how to close a game and a series. They will be tough to beat in the WCF.

The thought of Utah in the WCF is not pleasant, but we have to get past SA first.

Sorry to disappoint all the optimists here; I think it's going to be SA in the WCF. I just don't see SA giving up their upper hand and losing to the Suns tonight. That's another team that always gets it done.

However, Dallas did beat them in game 7 in SA last year.

Tonight
I had a crazy day yesterday - it involved plumbing, drains, the hardware store, cramped legs and back - so I wasn't able to finish watching the game until late last night.

I don't have much to add comments-wise on game 3 that hasn't been said and I won't have time to watch the game in detail today.

I agree that the officiating was HORRIBLE and far worse then game 1. The non-calls on Duncan and the couple of cheap calls on Amare and KT were just beyond belief. You can't call the game one way for one team and another way for the other. I guess it pays off being the biggest Whiners in all of Whine-land. It sucks. There. I'm done w/ my venting. Sorry Dan.

I do think that the Suns let the bad calls into their head and perhaps even the Coach did as well.

I also think there a couple of serious mistakes the Suns made as well:

  1.  Boris looked great at first until they started collapsing on him. The Spurs don't double in the traditional way from the strong side and forcing the ball out of your hands. They come from the weak (non-ball) side of the post and wait for you when you make your move. That way you have to go through several of them to get to the hoop. I said that Amare needed to pass out when they did this and I think Boris made the same mistake. After he scored in the post a few times in a row they changed their defense and started that collapse thing. Numerous times from there Boris still tried to go through them and score instead of making the good pass. His team mates were also standing around too much and not moving to give him a good outlet. Maybe this is poor coaching? I don't know how you could not be prepared for it if you are a Suns post player.
  2. The last few minutes of the 3rd Qtr were crucial. Props to Manu for maning-up after Shawn hit him in the eye. But w/ Parker and Duncan on the bench the Suns 2nd unit CAN'T let Manu outplay them like that. This part of the game should be a Suns plus and it wasn't. The Sun's let down here.
  3. Amare's 5th foul was dumb and he knows it.
  4. Duncan continues to be amazing. I keep waiting for him go cold. Maybe KT needs to do something early to get under his skin. There was some points in game 3 where KT was grabbing his jersey and it seemed to bother Timmy. I have lost a lot of respect for Duncan in this series as a person but his game is way better then I thought. He's been unstoppable so far. I don't think they should double him though expect for critical points like in the 4th quarter.
  5. In the fourth Qtr when Nash was carrying the team and willing a victory, three times they left guys WIDE open for 3's. Nash was at fault himself here at least twice. And I think there was several times a Sun was back complaining and not covering up on D.
I just heard Bickley blame both series loses on the lack of poise and I tend to agree.

The Suns are a far better team and in a seven game series should win. The Suns will win tonight and come back tied and win it in 6!

by Seth Pollack on May 14, 2007 9:32 AM MDT reply actions

Bickley
He has a point- the Suns need to let go of the bad calls and continue to play their game. However, I don't like the way Bickley comes across. He refuses to even acknowledge that there were some horrible calls against the Suns. Even the TV announcers agreed that the officiating was bad and stilted heavily in favor of the Spurs. What keeps Bickley from giving the Suns even a little 'credit'? It cannot be all Suns' fault when they lose, just like it cannot be all due to the officiating.

Tonight
Like srp the other day, i am trying to decide whether to keep in touch with the score tonight. I have to teach the class 6pm-8:15pm. So the earliest I could find out anything would be in late 3rd Q, on my car radio, then watch Q4 at home. Later I can watch the tape if the Suns win, and erase it if they don't (it will be too painful to watch).

Since I won't get home before 8:45pm, I am thinking that I may just skip the whole game, then watch the entire tape from the beginning. This takes a lot of discipline though. Besides, it will be tough to not watch the Q4 while it is still being played.

This is one of the few times I am actually afraid of watching the entire game- too much stress. I feel that SA will win it, so why bother to watch?

by Vash01 @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 14, 2007 10:39 AM MDT reply actions

Exactly but
Tonight my uncle's funeral is at 6:30 so my plan is to TRY and avoid the score until I get home and can watch the entire game. He was a Sun's fan. You think he would have scheduled this better...

So, Vash that's my plan. Except I anticipate a Sun's win. I get that you are doing the reverse phsych thing though...hope that works!

He certainly had a full life

And, there over 250 people at his funeral. On a playoff night!

Btw, I managed to avoid the score until I got home. I was able to watch the game all the way through w/o knowing the outcome - which was fantastic given the finish. How about you?

Sounds like a very good man- your uncle. It is always sad to lose a family member but I am glad that he had a good life.

About the game- I am impressed with your discipline in avoiding the score. At the most I would have started watching from Q4. It would have taken all the patience in the world to watch the whole game when the outcome was already known to all but the viewer.

by Vash01 @ Bright Side Of The Sun on May 16, 2007 6:51 PM MDT up reply actions

More to life...
Ain't worth stressing over. Can't change what happens after the fact anyway (actually, you can't even change what happens before the fact either, I guess--that's up to the Suns). :) Anyway, if it's that upsetting (and it would be for me), I'd just go ahead and check the score when you get home and be done with it. If the Suns pull it off, then they're still fun to watch even when you already know the outcome. If they don't, then no point getting emotionally involved in a game that's already been decided, and pretty much spells the end of the season for our guys. That's what I would do in your situation, anyway. Other people might see it differently.

by TexSUN on May 14, 2007 11:30 AM MDT up reply actions

Keep in mind...
I'm the weirdo who has trouble enjoying a game when I know the outcome has already been determined. I'd rather just know up front what happened if I have to watch a game after the fact, and then I can sit back and enjoy it (or choose not to watch if it's something that puts us in a 1-3 whole, and I'd rather not see it--or maybe save it for later viewing after the miracle comeback? :) ).
