Draft Lottery Tonight

The draft lottery tonight is at 8:30 ET. Most of the time, Suns fans wouldn't even be interested in the draft lottery except to see what team gets which pick. But this time the Suns have something at stake.

When the Suns traded Joe Johnson for Boris Diaw they also got 2 first round draft picks from the Atlanta Hawks. This year the draft pick is only protected if the Hawks are in the top 3 picks. I think the Hawks thought they would be much, much better than they currently are. The ended up with the 4th worst record in the league last season.

But because of the way the draft lottery works, even with the 4th worst record the Hawks could still end up with one of the top three picks. Technically, they could end up lower than 4th as well.

ESPN has a link to a mock draft lottery and I ran it 10 times. The Phoenix Suns took the pick 5 times and didn't get any lower than 5th. The Hawks got the pick 5 times and had the 1st pick twice. So it's definitely not guaranteed that the Suns are going to get this pick tonight.

What do you think will happen? If the Suns got the 4th or 5th pick, who do you think they should take? What should the Suns do if they end up not getting the pick?

The way the past week has gone?

Scary to even think about it. I'm not counting on anything until we actually have the pick. If any team is due for a break, though, it's the Suns.

Not sure yet ...

...who they should take if they get the 4th 5th or 6th picks (or even if they will still have the pick come draft day) but I do know that if they don't get it then we will have to go back in our history to search for the moment that caused our Curse ala trading Babe Ruth.

I am just hoping that if we are cursed we can beat it faster then the red sox did....and don't even mention the "C" word.

To remind those of you who can't remember

The coin flip with Milwaukee in 1969 for the rights to pick a kid coming out of UCLA named Lew Alcindor, the stakes tonight are not really that high. We'll either get a #4 or #5 (Joachim Noah, Corey Brewer, this crazy Chinese guy Yi), or we won't get a top-10 pick (but have Atlanta's pick next year no matter where it is -- maybe they'll get the #3 and not get Oden or Durant and they could STILL be a lottery team).

For tragic moments in Suns history, fueling some sort of "curse" look to its long failed history of having a true big man:

Coin Flip 1969 (Milwaukee took Alcindor, who soon changed his name to Kareem, and the Suns took Neal Walk)
Trading Denis Johnson to the Boston Celtics for Rick Robey. (Don't get me started on the oft-injured Alvin "Ankles" Adams, or letting James Edwards get to Detroit)
August 1987. Nick Vanos, a classic young big man, dies in NW Flight 255 from Detroit to Phoenix (the one where only the little girl survived, held in her mothers arms).
Calling Amare a "point-center"

and took Armon Gilliam over Scottie Pippen (and Kevin Johnson and Reggie Miller)...

Ugh

I just played ESPN's lottery 10 times too. Atlanta got to keep their pick seven of the ten times, and a couple of times they ended up with Greg Oden at #1, and a couple more times ended up with Kevin Durant at #2. The three times that Phoenix got the pick, they picked Yi twice and Brewer once.

The only thing that can be accomplished with all this discussion is to jinx the Suns, or (if it's possible) make the jinx even worse.

Hold your breath, cross your fingers and toes and rub your rabbit's foot.

Also, instead of spending so much time on the internet, we should all be out in the fields searching for a four-leaf clover.

I don't even care anymore. I give up. My worst week ever as a sports fan. No, scratch that. Last year's loss to Dallas might have been worse. It's a tossup. Anyway, the saying goes "worry about the things you can change, and accept the things you can't". I guess that's as applicable here as anything else. Time to get back to work, back to life, and indulge in fun activities that have nothing to do with basketball I guess. Later...

Guinness and vanilla ice cream...?

Just a tiny bit OT but my wife and my neighbor's wife got it in their pretty little heads that Guinness and Ice Cream was a great idea. Appreantly, this is a thing? It is no thing I have ever heard of.

I don't drink Guinness anymore btw. I was staioned in Germany 100 years ago and got hooked on the real stuff. What you get here is just too disappointing so I stick w/ plain old American beer so my expectations are met.

American Beer and Boring Basketball

I imagine ice cream and any beer would be pretty gross. Also, Guinness doesn't have the CO2, which gives the flavor to an ice cream in the root beer version of the float.

I'm told the Guinness is different in Ireland than in other parts of the world, but that some European countries do "bootleg" the good stuff.

Maybe we should all set our standards lower -- American beer and a .500 ballclub. That way, we won't get so disappointed.
