I can watch the NBA Finals now!

Congratulations to the Cleveland Cavaliers, to the NBA and to me!  LeBron James (and someone named Daniel Gibson) led his team past the Detroit Pistons in 6 games to get to the NBA Finals.  And now, because it isn't a Detroit/San Antonio finals, I actually am excited to watch again.

The prospect of watching a 65-60 game when the Spurs and Pistons played each other just was not enticing.  But watching LeBron James and the Cavaliers play just got me excited about watching the NBA again.

If you haven't figured it out yet, I'll be rooting really hard for the Cavaliers this coming week.  It should be a fun series.

Not me
Sorry, but I still don't care. In fact, I think if LeBron wins a ring this early in his career, he will become a total spoiled brat. He's kinda already one anyway from what I've read. Also, this makes me feel even worse about the Suns not getting past SA. We would have blown Cleveland away! Of course, since I despise Detroit nearly as much as I do David Stern's idiotic decision-making, I wouldn't have wanted them to win either. So best I can do is still stay AWAY. (Which is actually going to be easy to do since I'll be away on business all week anyway).

It makes me feel worse because the Suns could have beaten the cavs easily.

However, I am glad it is not Detroit in the finals.

That also means the Spurs could win 4-0.

There is no happy ending to this season.

I will still root for the Cavs
It's a losing cause, but I will at least root for the Cavs. May be Bowen or Duncan will be injured. There may be a poetic justice somewhere. I don't see the cavs one man show LeBron getting it done against the Spurs without an injury to a key Spur. I am not wishing an injury on the Spurs, but that is the only scenario where the Cavs have a chance.

How many games?
Side Show Bob vs. Cheap Shot Bob. How many games does Side Show Bob's team get against Cheap Shot Bob? since we know the San Antonio Snores are winning.

Go Cavs!
I'm with Dan - I'm watching and rooting for the Cavs!

I'm not upset because I feel like we could have beaten the Cavs easily, I'm excited. Somehow this feels like a victory.

Maybe because it's a victory over all those 'experts' who assumed the Pistons would roll over the Cavs easily, the same 'experts' who after the Spurs-Suns series insisted on saying 'the better team just won.'

Ha!

These experts have s@%& for brains, and I'm rooting for the improbable of the Cavs beating the Spurs, just to stick it to the 'experts' some more!

It also feels good because frankly it makes me feel even stronger than ever that we really were one of the 2 best teams in the playoffs. I know it has a lot to do with match-ups and all that, but the Mavericks and the Pistons didn't just lose to the Warriors and the Cavs. They lost to those teams while looking like less-than-elite teams.

Is there anybody here who believes that there's a single team in the league that the Suns wouldn't have at least matched blow-for-blow, regardless of 'match-ups'?

The Warriors were scary, but we would have found a way to match them (they sucker-punched us in the regular season - wouldn't we have found a way to, at the very least, make it a real series in the playoffs?) The Pistons played the game of their lives and took advantage of our exhaustion. The Jazz out-hustled us in the first 3 games and thus were able to pull out close wins - but the playoffs are a different story.

And most tellingly of all, in the playoffs, we matched the vaunted Spurs in those 1st 4 games.

Maybe this kind of thinking makes most people bitter - what could have been? But I've felt my fair share of bitterness since the Suns lost and about this I feel good, because it makes me confident in how great my team was, even though they lost the chance to prove it.

Then again...
...maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. The idea of the Spurs in the Finals is beginning to make me nauseous again. I'm not sure I can watch. I watched a few brief moments of the Spurs-Jazz before having to turn away. The idea of tuning in and hearing everyone swoon over the Spurs is already giving me headache.

well said dan!
I agree, I'm watching the games for sure. I think some might over estimate the spurs, similar to overestimating the mavs vs g.s. I predicted a g.s. victory (series) vs the mavs, and I'm saying here, cleveland will win! I love the suns, but bowen was larger and stronger and dirtier than Nash, Lebron is much stronger than anyone on the spurs and has a touch of the Nash pass, involve the team thing. It should be fun. I disagree with Texsun, I don't think that poorly of james, I haven't followed him too closely personally, but as a player he has the greatness of scoring like kobe & jordan, and the mentality of a team player. He really verbally supports his teammates, and I think this should be a lot of fun. Granted the suns style is more fun to watch, after the g.s. - mavs upset, then the cavs-pistons upset, you'd think people would learn to not assume the series is over and the spurs will walk away with it, strange. His name is Gibson, someone Adam over at section f sports has been ravig about for weeks. Because of him and the big white guy, and some others, this cav team isn't the one man show people might guess it to be. For the first time in 15 years, I'd be willing to say, there might be another player in Jordan's league, not the league below. Time will tell, but for a 22yr old, things look pretty great.

Will the Spurs try their dirty tricks?
I wonder if Bowen et al. may try to injure one of the key Cavs players? If the Spurs are winning they  may not try that. However, if the Cavs are challenging, it will be interesting to see what Pop advises his players to do.

Go Spurs
This may be my first time pulling for Duncan's squad in the finals. I don't expect nicknames to change no matter what happens in the finals, but isn't Duncan (3 rings w/ finals MVP's) more of an NBA "King" than LBJ so far?

LeBron puts up some great all-around numbers, but do we look back on Oscar Robertson (admittedly an all-time great) as the KING?

Jordan averaged 32.5 ppg, 8 rpg, 8 apg and 2.89 spg with 53.8% shooting in what was essentially his 4th year in the league (since he only played 18 games in his 2nd year). Is that why he's viewed as perhaps the greatest of all time?

LeBron's a great player, but I'm sick of the hype-machine of people who are over-hungry for the next Jordan-sized superstar. Besides, I don't know if I like the emphasis on great PLAYERS (whether they pass the ball or not) as opposed to great TEAMS.

Watching LeBron
The thing that is going to make the series watchable is LeBron.  The first game I watched after the Suns lost was Game 5 of the ECF.  It was a very boring "walk the ball up the court" type of game, except that LeBron got the ball at half-court and then went one on five.  That was fun to watch.  He won't be able to do as much with Duncan there, put whoever guards him on the permieter will get killed.

The Spurs will still win in 4 or 5, though.  And each win will be by around 10 points.

I will root for him even though he's an ego-maniac.  If that was a disqualifier, I couldn't root for anyone in pro sports.

Mmmmm ... Guinness

I'm not sure
I'll be curious to see what happens.  Everyone thought the Mavs would beat the Warriors in the playoffs because it was the playoffs - even though the Warriors had the Mavs' number.

The Cavs swept the Spurs in the regular season...I'm just saying.

hey....
i predicted a g.s. victory before 1 game was even played... and i predict a 6 or 7 game series here

where's the love?

King James
It's too early to annoint him and I don't think it's going to happen this year but LeBron is going to rule the NBA in the years to come. I will root for the Cavs although I may not watch the NBA finals (it's no fun without the Suns).  I do believe the Spurs will win either 4-0 or 4-1.

by Vash01 on Jun 3, 2007 9:15 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

here is my prediction
There is NOT going to be a sweep.  The reason is that NBA loves LeBron.  So one of the two things will happen: 1) Go to at least game 6 or 7 and Spurs win OR 2) LeBron and Cavs win in 6.  The reason for 1) is that Spurs should be the better team.  The reason for 2) is that NBA loves LeBron and his Jordon-like performances (with help from the referees).  Do you remember last year's Wade???

BTW, I finally figure why this rigged league wanted the Spurs to beat the Suns if Detroit would come out of the East, which seemed very likely at the time.  NBA loves two things (in this order):  Jordon and dynasty.  The Jordon-like people were in the East, LeBron or Wade.  During the the Spurs and Suns series, Detroit was going to win the East.  So the league wanted Spurs to win the title as it would be a dynasty (4-titles-in-10-years is kind of a dynasty.)
Now with LeBron being in the final, I think the Cavs have a great chance.  (Not that they are a good time, it's just that NBA wants LeBron to rule.)

Another thing, I do believe it is impossible for the league to rig the results of the entire playoff from the beginning.  What is possible is for them to change the results of one or two close games in a series, which causes momentum shifts.  Again, last year's Wade and this year's Spurs-Suns are my proofs.

One last thing, I also expect to see another cheap-shot from Spurs.

by sonicking on Jun 3, 2007 11:43 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed
Since the NBA is rigged, LeBron and the Cavs may have a chance.  It may still be tough to beat the Spurs though; they are much better than the Cavs. We may see a few cheap shots from the Spurs but I don't expect to see anything like what we saw against the Suns (Bowen's kick to Amare, Bowen's knee to groin, and the one that really took the cake- Horry's Horryble foul on Nash in game 4). I expect the Spurs to be more guarded this time- tough but not like the Suns series where 'anything goes' ruled. Plus I don't think the Spurs will try to injure LeBron (I may have said the opposite earlier) who seems to be the NBA's favorite son right now. Won't it be interesting to see LeBron get away with some rough plays (elbows, etc.) against the Spurs? I would love to see the Spurs reaction to the non-calls.  So it may turn out to be an interesting series afterall. However, if it's a blowout in the Spurs favor, even the NBA won't be able to help the Cavs.

In retrospect, an nba finals series between the Cavs and the Suns would have been very exciting- neither team has won the title; it would have been the first. Now it's David vs. Goliath.

sad thing
The sad thing is the league has lost credibility in my mind.  No matter what the outcome of the series, I cannot take it seriously.  Basketball is a wonderful sport but the NBA has ruined it.

by Vash01 on Jun 4, 2007 6:37 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Not rigged, but still not watching
I don't buy the conspiracy theories, but I'm still not going to watch the Spurs, regardless of who they are playing.  Sour grapes?  OK, sure, if you like.  Bottom line:  the Suns have never won the last game of the season, but this year's exit left a bitter taste like none other ever has.  It was barely 2 weeks ago, and I ain't over it yet.  I'll see the NBA in the fall.

Who cares anyways
Props to LeBron, I hope he wins it all.

Nope
Like I want to watch Manu, Parker and Duncan sitting on the bench at the end of games in blowouts, cheering on their scrubs (like horry).

egh, bring on November.

David vs Goliath
And I'm gonna pull for LeBron to sling some stones and shock the Spurs.

On a side note, I find it amazing that the Commish, his Enforcer Putz (Stu Jackson), and the NBA just totally love the Spurs.

Like with their dirty play, they're supposed to be the so-called class of the NBA.

Puh-leez.

Bowen gets away with so many cheap shots it's not even funny.

Ginobili has a penchant for committing multiple underhanded uncalled fouls and immediately overacting when the playa guarding him retalliates.

Duncan consistently overreacts to personal foul calls that of course -- according to him -- he's never guilty of.

And Gregg Popovich acts like his guys are always the victims of the refs calls -- when his squad continues to benefit from the repeatedly bad officiating in these playoffs.

I'm sick and tired of the Spurs.

Go Cleveland!
