Major Changes at Bright Side of the Sun

It is with great sadness that I am announcing my resignation as site admin of Bright Side of the Sun.  It has been an awesome experience to write about the Phoenix Suns and to follow them more closely on a day-today basis than I ever had in my life before I started writing this blog.  It has been a very rewarding experience.  From the opportunity to write little blurbs that ended up on the Sports Illustrated and ESPN web sites to the chance to work with so many great bloggers in the sports blogosphere to having great conversations with so many readers on the site.

The only way I could describe the site (or any good sports blog) to people who asked what I did on the site was to say it was like going to your favorite sports bar every day where you know everyone and everyone knows you (yeah, kind of like Cheers) but without the drinking.  And I had the privilege to come in every day and jump-start the discussions.  A lot of times they didn't go exactly as I had planned but that was the beauty of a blog.  You say your piece and then you see what others have to say about it.  Most of the time you have a lot of people disagreeing with you and it makes you really think about your opinion.  There were times that I changed my opinion after discussions.  There were other times when I was convinced everyone was wrong and never did change my mind.

I know there are several people who are probably glad I'm leaving (I'm thinking of all you Spurs fans out there who detest me and my writing).  If that's the case, I'm glad I could help make your day just a little brighter.  But I'm definitely going to miss this blog.  It's grown from just a few page views per day to getting up to a few thousand per day.  Not a lot in the grand scheme of things but considering this blog is so focused on one thing, I think it's pretty good.

Some of you may be wondering why I am giving up such a great thing.  Well, to be honest, it's because an even greater opportunity has come up. Check out this commercial and you can see what I'm experiencing: Priceless

A few weeks ago I was offered a full-time job as the Web Analytics Coordinator for the Phoenix Suns.  Basically, that means that I'll be spending every day trying to help the Suns.com web site get a little better and produce better results for both fans and advertisers.  Working for the Phoenix Suns was something I had dreamed of as a kid but I never thought it would become a reality.  When the opportunity came along, it was just something I couldn't pass up.  While I probably won't start out doing any writing, I hope to possibly talk them into letting me have a small part on the official Phoenix Suns blog so I can keep writing publicly about the team that I love.

Your next question is probably  concerning what will happen to this blog?  Once I found out I would be working with the Suns, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep writing on this site.  It just wouldn't work.  So I had to decide on a replacement.  I feel like I kept a fairly consistent tone on the site that was different than other Phoenix Suns blogs out there and I didn't want to let just anyone come in and change that.  Once I realized that, the decision actually became easy.  So with no further ado, I present to you TexSUN, your new BrightSideoftheSun.com site administrator.  I will let her explain herself to you and what she hopes to do for the site over the next few days.  But I did want to say that I think the blog is being turned over to very capable hands.  I think she'll be able to write about the Suns in a passionate and intelligent way and will help further the discussion of the team we love to watch.  She has been a faithful contributor to the site since it launched and I think those of you who haven't read her diaries will learn that she knows what she is talking about when it comes to the Phoenix Suns.

In conclusion, this will be my last post as a site administrator.  Effective immediately, TexSUN is your new go-to person for any questions or comments about the site.  Now she gets to deal with irate Spurs fans e-mailing her to talk about what losers Phoenix Suns fans are.  Now she gets to deal with online reporters from rival cities making thinly-veiled jabs at her and her writing.  Now she gets to get called names like "idiot", "jerk" and "blatantly unlikable".  She's going to love it.

And you know what?  I'm really going to miss it all.

Good luck to everyone and I hope to keep reading your writing and comments in the future.  For anyone who wants to still keep in touch, you can e-mail me at sunsblogger@gmail.com.  Otherwise, keep visiting BrightSideoftheSun.com and definitely come check out Suns.com.  There is a lot of cool stuff there and when the season gets back in gear, we should have some pretty good blogging there as well!

Thanks Dan
Thank you for this Suns blog!  This has been the only blog that I trust to get level-headed conversation about the Suns.  You're faithful writing about the Suns has been greatly appreciated by my family and will be missed.

Dude....
congrats and good luck in your future endeavors.  Its very rare that dream jobs come knocking.  I am sure you will do well.  Even though I don't right much as far as posts...I visit this site daily to see whats up.  I am very glad I found this place and will stay....even though TexSun is the new administrator (thats a small jab at humor...lol), hell....I didn't even know she was a she till I read your post....shows how much I know....lol.  Anyways....good luck and come back and visit from time to time....and if the Suns actually offically come up with a fan page...let us know.

Goodbye and Congrats
Dan,

All good things must come to an end. I am thrilled for you because you get to work for the Suns...WOW! Congratulations!

Even before you mentioned TexSun in your post, I thought she might be a suitable replacement for you. It turned out to be right! (Great minds think alike, don't they?) Congrats to TexSun and best wishes to her too.

We will miss you but I know you are going to greener pastures so I cannot feel sad about it. I know you will do a Fantastic job as the Suns web coordinator (or whatever your title might be).

Goodbye and Best wishes.

Thanks, Vash!
I'll be posting my "acceptance speech" (for lack of a better word) tomorrow, along with comments on tonight's summer league game. I wanted to give Dan's post top billing overnight so all the regular readers get a chance to see it before I start posting on the main page. Looking forward to having a great excuse for my compulsive writing habit. :)

Yeah - ditto what Vash said...
Seriously - this is great news for you Dan. I visit suns.com often and even read the blogs there. I look forward to see your fingerprints all over the place in no time!

I haven't been 'round these parts that long - I only found the place during the Laker's series - but I have and will continue to enjoy the discussions here.

TexSun - I guess you know about the shoes and filling and all that jazz. Congrats and good luck! oh, and don't think this means we are going to hold back on you if you are talking crazy talk :) That's the joy of the blogolandisphereville!

Goodbye and come visit us
Dan,

Your blog has been great.  It's become something I visit daily.  I am sorry to see you leave but I am very happy for you.  Congratulations!!!

Oh and Dan...
does this mean we have an inside line to Sarver, Kerr and the rest of Suns braintrust through you?

Look - when you are in the lunch room over at AWA USAA or whatever we are calling it just ease on over to the bigs wigs and whisper....kobe.kobe.kobe....and idle on by.

Maybe some subtle messages on the web site...some kobe's sprinkled around here and there kind of subliminally? Or how about sneaking in to Kerr's office and just writing Kobe in his daytimer a few thousand times.

You could hack his outlook and have kobe pop up as a reminder a few times a day...

Look, just drop me a line if you need more ideas..

by Seth Pollack on Jul 9, 2007 7:58 PM MDT reply actions

You're assuming Dan WANTS Kobe on the team
Maybe he'd rather write "KG" in Sarver's daytimer instead?

by TexSUN on Jul 9, 2007 8:01 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh, come on - how could he not want Kobe?
I know he doesn't actually - I was just giving him a hard time :) and reliving a totally off topic discussion I started about race, rich white people and lots of other fun stuff that began as a Kobe discussion a few weeks back.

by Seth Pollack on Jul 9, 2007 8:28 PM MDT up reply actions

plus, like denver
we have so many resorts and hotels Kobe could visit to help r... (I mean mentor) the youth. Seriously, Kobe may be the most gifted player on the floor in the nba, but the guy is selfish, and stupid, and the Suns are the opposite, and if you heard some of the suns players on the team, especially some of the veterans who have been around the league, they're currently saying what a great atmosphere the suns team and players have, I don't want that to change. I like your comments srp, your much more knowledgeable in the nba than me, and have shown much kindness in explaining a thing or 2 to me, but if Kobe really is that big a thing for you, you should be a lakers fan, or where ever Kobe ends up playing. (Please take this the right way), I know your only joking, but I have zero respect for Kobe. Players rarely reach a level he's at, and a few of them are truely great
people away from their sport, like Tiger woods and Steve Nash, but Kobe hasn't risen to the challenge, and he's running out of time to change as a player.

Thanks, everyone
I appreciate the support.  I'm very excited about everything and hope it all turns out great.  And TexSUN will do great running everything!

Dan,
Congrats and wowsers.  As has been stated above, you have given this site a unique flavor that has brought me through on a daily basis, even if usually as a lurker.

TexSUN,
Congrats yourself!  A typically wise decision by Dan, sez I. ;)

Although I haven't been here very long...
I wanna thank you, Dan -- for being a great "blog administrator," and being very hospitable to new members like me.

I'm pumped for you, man.  That sounds like a very, very exciting opportunity working for the NBA team we all know and love -- our Beloved Phoenix Suns!!!
Mucho Congrats are in order!!!

God Speed Dan!!!!
You were truly a classy blogger Dan and you shall be missed greatly.  Good luck in your new job and hopefully you'll be able to fix up the Suns site (I feel they could do much better).

Good luck !
I have been reading this blog only in the last few months, and as you wrote it was a great place, a place where you could just drop by for some talk on our Suns or just to read some nice comments. I really hope this site will still be that place.
I am very happy for you, I think that's a great opportunity. So thanks and good luck on the new job.

dan
good luck to you, If you have the effect on the suns web page as you've had here, the suns.com people are lucky to have you. And if they're wise enough to get you doing some blog stuff in addition to your web stuff, I figure its win win for me. Now, there will be 2 great places for me to go to, not just here. The difference in this blog vs others is tremendous and I hope it stays that way. TEXSUN, congratulations, good choice Dan, she'll do great!

Seems like a good time to ask this, to Dan or Texsun, if we get someone on this blog being really rude and just cutting down people and not talking basketball, can and will the admin just remove their login and not approve a new one? Don't reply about the new login one thought, too big a subject really, between ip addresses, zip codes, etc etc. I really just wanted to know about the first part, would you guys kick someone out to help keep this blog so good, as it has been? I hope so, and I'm not referring to other nba team fans, I'm referring to people who destructively attack other bloggers here, which I have seen, but very, very rarely. It seems that some other blogs, that's what half of the blog is about sometimes, just sorry stuff. I'm not the best speed reader, but I like to think I can get away from a junk blog in under 10 seconds.

And Dan, seriously, one way to really make the suns.com rock, try getting some of the players to blog, and to have a live 1 hour response session throughout the season, like 1 player a week. Sensor out the really rude stuff, I'd really want to read that!

Hooray for Dan!
You rule.  Congrats on the new position.  I work for a sports team too, and I hate it.  But I think it's cuz I've hated them my whole life, while if I got a job at a team I loved (like the Suns) I'd feel differently.

Always liked reading TexSun, the ultimate optimist.  (as opposed to someone like Vash...shudder)

Yay

I don't appreciate the personal attack on me. You could have been nice to TexSun without being mean to me.

I gotta agree
I appreciate the compliment, but I hope the quip about Vash was meant to be humorous rather than taken seriously. Besides, different points of view are what make this site worth visiting.

Dan's "blogger turned Suns employee" story got us posted on Suns.com's Around the Web today. Check it out.

Congratulations Dan
You ran a great blog and enjoyed what I read of it. This site makes a great chance to catch up on the newest and important Suns info. Even better it has attracted a strong following that makes the blog just that much more formidable. It will be fun to keep up with this in the future to see what, if anything, changes with the new administration. And of course congratulations on the dream job.
