Warning: Good News May Be Hazardous to Your Team

Is it just me, or does it seem like every bit of good news that comes the Suns' way lately is booby-trapped with something awful just waiting to throw water on our enthusiasm? First, the Suns win an awesome Game 4 in the Suns-Spurs series...except it doesn't matter because Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw get themselves suspended for Game 5. Next, the Suns seemingly luck out when Atlanta finishes with the fourth best record...only Atlanta manages to land in the lottery's third spot anyway, keeping their draft pick and sending the Suns' offseason plans into a momentary tailspin. The Suns land Grant Hill, and things are looking good again...until Kurt Thomas is sent to the Sonics leaving us all to wonder just how our team plans to defend Tim Duncan next time he's in town. And if that wasn't bad enough, we learn about Tim Donaghy's sordid deeds on the same day!

So now, just when the Suns have finally signed a possible Kurt Thomas replacement, and we fans are starting to feel good about ourselves again, we learn that Shawn Marion no longer wants to be a part of our team, and worse, he wants to go to our most hated rival. Anybody else starting to feel like we're due a break that doesn't come packaged with something dreadful? I'm starting to think any good news involving the Suns should carry a warning label like the following:

Warning!!! Cheering this bit of good fortune will result in an equal or greater amount of bad fortune.

Past Issues
There does seem to be a pattern of this good with bad stuff in the past. For instance Phoenix took part in the greatest game ever played (Game 5, 1976 NBA Finals, Boston), with Gar Heard making the "Shot Heard Round the World" yet we came out of the losing end in that game and series. There's also Game 6 of the 1993 NBA Finals with one of the best winning shots in history, made though by John Paxson, stabbing Phoenix in the heart, and totally nulling out the game winning shot by Dan Majerle in Chicago.
But we still cheer on because of that golden, spherical hope...

on that...
I was just catching a few seconds of the silly movie
the fish that saved pittsburgh, and saw Kareem on it, and my wife said something about him. I told her the Suns lost a coin flip, which would've brought Kareem to the Suns years ago during the draft. Another good luck, bad luck thing...

A thought, the diamondbacks and their championship, I was a fan for 2 years leading up to their win, just luck, a friend of mine was and still is a very big fan, so we went to a few games. The thing about the d-backs, they were a team (in my view) that bought their chance at the championship, and won. I wouldn't say this if the team could actually have stayed together, but if I remember correctly, they were a very poorly structured financially team, didn't help not getting their share of tv revenue at the time also. My point, the d-backs are such a different team, I like to watch a team that has a core group of guys for a few years, not a new team every other 2-3 years. With this in mind, the Suns have been very lucky the last 2-3 years, the core of marion, nash, and amare has stayed together. But it looks like that may change. Hindsight is easy, but I agree with letting K.Thomas go, and I really like the 2 draft picks. I just don't understand the not taking the first round pick when Splitter was available. (Is he not playing in the U.S. this year?), but for me, the thing that really has hurt was losing Joe Johnson. What he wanted in salary was nothing like the $20 million Marion wants, and to me, Joe was that extra piece that could've brought us 2-3 titles, but between him getting hurt during that playoffs, and I think I remember him having issues with Amare also (like Marion), it just didn't happen. I like barbosa, but he's not Joe Johnson.

Still, with all that's happened, even if we lose Marion, you have to like our team, and I'm excited about this upcoming season. As far as the "who's going to guard Duncan" thing, I have no answer... does anyone...

I just hope this group of guys have a lot of fun and desire playing together, the team 2 years ago had a hunger and heart to it, that last years team started to lose during the playoffs. In my mind, we've been in the championship game last year, it's just the nba's seeding was screwed up.

Why I like the Suns
Thats very true about the idea of having core guys to root for. I understand the changing of the guard and the sports pendulum of going from best to worst, worst to best. But its always nice to have familiar faces to  ease the transition. Thats why I stopped rooting for the D-Backs. Their constant retooling eroded the 2001 team I knew and loved to the point that I just didn't care anymore, regardless if they were the "hometown team". The way they dealt Gonzales put me over the edge and I just stopped following. It gave me more time to examine and cheer for those old loves (the Suns and Coyotes) and the new ones (Premier Leauge Football).
I want a championship to come to this city sooooo bad, but I will have still enjoyed the ride these guys have given us to get there.

i agree
the last 2 seasons have been a lot of fun for me, I almost feel like we did win a championship for how great I feel watching them play, really says a lot for how entertaining this team and their style of play is. I took my wife's dad to a game 2 years ago,
I got front row (center) tickets through the ticket exchange, a few hundred bucks, but this guy has done a lot for us, so, I knew it was going to be fun, but I didn't expect it to be that much fun. WOW!! is all I can say, it's worth the money to sit up close for this team!

Say what you want to about Sarver, and I'm not a fan or enemy really of his, but I do like that he gets into the games and cheers, etc (foam finger),
I just hope my suns ride isn't over in 2-3 years, I have a feeling it won't be, for the many negatives in the nba, there are a lot of positives... and I don't have a strong enough interest or time to follow any other sport, so BBall it is!

Cautiously Optimistic
27 years as a Suns fan and those two words have come to define my enthusiasm.

Well, either that, or "Willing Masochist".

Always remember to keep one foot in the groove
