Beat LA! : Suns top Lakers (106-98)
Ah, that was nice. The cool satisfaction of a great victory...well, that would have been my line if the game had ended in 3rd qtr with the Suns up by 20.
As it was, the Suns had to hang on for a 106-98 win after giving up 37 points in the 4th which equaled the total Lakers output for the combined 2nd and 3rd quarters. Yes, they scored 37 points in the middle 24 minutes and then another 37 in the final 12. Not exactly a stellar effort for all 48.
Of course, any win against the hated Lakers is a good thing but clearly this one left something to be desired. Like a dominating beat down blow out that we should have inflicted against a lame LA team that played poorly. I guess when your toughest player is the kicker then that's what you get...
To be fair, it certainly was a no win situation from the start. A loss would have lead to mass Harry Carry in Suns-land (that's where you pick up the Gorilla and stab him in the guts) and a win - as the Chuckster reminded us in his first big blasts of hot air - was the equivalent of kissing your sister. Or kissing Andrew Bynum's sister's knee. Or beating the Spurs without Tony Parker. Whatever.
The only thing that would have really helped would have been a dominate blow out victory. But that was not to be and instead the story line in Phx is about how the Suns almost blew it and in LA about how the Lakers almost pulled it out despite Bynum's wandering kneecap and in the national media about how Andy Garcia's season tickets are worse then Penny Marshal's.
But since this is the Bright Side of the Sun let's hit the highlights for the good guys:
- Suns started the game playing GREAT active D with 7 blocks in the first 12 minutes and holding the Lakers to an overall 38% FG. Take that Van "the Sun's don't protect the rim" Gundy!
- Nash was only 5 of 15 but hit a key 3 late and of course had a rare Double Benjamin (20 dimes)
- Amare was a monster in the first half and had one of the best dunks of the year. His D was also solid. When he played. Maybe the bright side of his silly foul trouble was that he only logged 26 minutes which is good because he will be nice and fresh against Al Jefferson tomorrow night. He was obviously saving himself for the mighty T-wolves who own us this year. Right?
- The other guys stepped it up offensively and I think this is really the key to getting wins in the playoffs and this was kind of like a playoff game (minus Grant Hill and Bynum's knee cap). Bell, LB, Diaw and Marion all shot well leading to a solid 52% FG and 50% from 3.
TexSun lobbied hard for her boy Trix and I guess its hard to argue with 57% shooting with 20 points, 16 rebounds, and some great D on Luke Walton which hopefully was felt somewhere by his idiot father.
But since I have the wheel tonight I am going Full French (google that one if you are over 18) and giving the nod to Boris. Le Diaw shot 69% and had himself 19 points, 6 boards and 5 dimes-which is a Quarter Half Benjamin for those keeping up. Most importantly he hit pretty much every open shot including the last one to nail the game shut. And let's not foget that he lead the Suns with a +18. Whatever the heck that means.
Runner Up goes to Kwame "Baby Hands" Brown. Every time he touched the ball I found my chants of "Kwame! Kwame!" rewarded with a missed dunk, dropped ball or botched pass quickly followed by Paper Clip Center boo's. Kwame Brown is obviously the Sun's key to beating the Lakers.
Oh, and the Suns regain the top spot in the West. But seriously, with 5 teams each at 12 loses this thing is basically a dead heat so let's not break out the victory Strawberry's just yet.
Let's see if the Lakers fall back without - say it with me now - The GREAT ANDREW BYNUM. Or will the Spurs implode after getting crushed by the Cavs? Will the Mav's Dirk it? Who knows. It should be a fun ride though.

Good Win
All in all i'd have to say that I never felt this game was slipping from out grasp. We set the pace all night and only teased them in the end.

Here here - let the Lakers implosion begin
Many fans booed Brown every time he touched the ball for several minutes before he came out for good after committing his fifth foul with 3:50 left in the third period. He had eight points and six rebounds.
"I thought it was terrible," said Kobe Bryant, who led the Lakers with 30 points and seven rebounds. "If they want to do that, they can stay home. He's going to be our guy here for two months. He's going to do fine, he's going to play well the next game.
"Kwame's sensitive. You boo him, it's going to affect him. I told him I've got his back."
Other teammates were upset as well.
"That's tough for anybody. For a guy who wants to play the right way, it's even tougher," said Lamar Odom, who had 19 points and matched his career high with 19 rebounds.
"We all stand behind him, we have faith in him," said Jordan Farmar, who scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. "That's just not right. If you're a Laker fan, you should support your team through the good, the bad, the ugly."
Brown left without speaking to reporters.
And for the record, I never though that the Lakers - even with Bynum's knee - had surpassed the Suns just like I don't think the Celtics are anything more then the 2nd best JV team. The Spurs are just playing mid-season possum and at the end of the day (barring injuries) it will still come down to the big 3: Suns, Spurs, Dirks.

When they win a playoff series
Sure, there's exceptions like the Cav's last year, but its not like that was their first playoff run and besides, the East was and is horrible right now.
I think the Hornets are a very good team but they are very thin as well. They are probably more of a threat to us b/c of our small front line then to the Spurs or Mavs but I just don't see them beating a top three team this year. If the finish 4th or 5th they have a chance for the second round but again, it just depends on the match up.
Do you pick them over the Jazz or Lakers? They probably match up well against the Warriors but what about the Nugs who if Nene is back can play great inside D and throw up a ton of points at any given moment - and they can also collapse faster then you can say "corn row"...
So yes, I think they are good and getting better but like Portland I see this as breakout year and then next year we will see if they make the leap to the next level of crash back down to earth like the Clips after their nice run.
And speaking of the Clips, that's another point. I just can't have a lot of faith in an organization that doesn't have a winning tradition. Sounds cliche but for some reason it does seem to matter. See also Cardinals, Arizona.

Hornets
As far as NO goes, yeah, they are thin. They have Peterson, Jackson, and Pargo off the bench, and are waiting for Julian wright and Hilton Armstrong to develop. They aren't any thinner than we are. Can you imagine how they'd be if they hadn't let Dallas steal Brandon Bass?
In reference to your paragraph about even superstars having to wait, didn't Duncan win in his second year? even Jordan didn't win it that quick. Magic won in his first year, didn't he?

Byron Scott
I think the main reason Julian Wright isn't getting much playing time is Byron Scott. He has always had a problem with young, inexperienced dudes not named Chris Paul. When Julian has gotten some PT this season, he's been a bundle of energy, but it's nervous energy that causes him to make some dumb turnovers and such. Another coach might put up with that, let the guy play through and learn from his mistakes. But not Byron. He has a very low tolerance for mistake-prone players, as Hornets fans have seen before with the likes of JR Smith, Kirk Snyder and Brandon Bass. I think Byron is a little short-sighted in this respect. Some might say he's jeopardizing the future of the team in order to win right now.

As for Timmy and Magic I believe TD came on to a team that was already winning w/ the Admiral and I believe the same is true w/ Magic.
In my theory its about teams learning how to win in the playoffs and improving year after year. First year playoff teams like NO don't usually beat "established" playoff teams. That's one reason the GSW win over the Dirks was so huge.
As for who will be in the West top 8 here's my picks in order of overall seeding (not by divsion):
1 - Mavs
2 - Suns
3 - Spurs
4 - Lakers
5 - Nuggets
6 - Jazz
7 - Warriors
8 - Hornets
That of course leave the Blazers and Rockets on the outside looking in and clear those teams are at least a 5 seed in the JV East. Its certainly as tight as its ever been but I figure some established teams like Utah will figure it out while the younger teams will hit a wall.

dimes
Technically if 20 dimes is double Benjamin 5 is half not quater
by udi on Jan 18, 2008 9:06 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
My math
If a Benjamin is a 100 and therefor 10 dimes (10 x 10) and a Double Benjamin is 200 (20 x 10) then 5 dimes (5 x 10) would be 50 or a half Benjamin or a quarter of a Double Benjamin...ok, I follow you now.
Thanks. I will fix that :)

Full French
Bwhahaha!!!
By the way, LA Times stories here are not really about how the Lakers almost pulled it out--they're more about how their suddenly promising season is down the tubes and that the Suns showed the Lakers that they're not done just yet.
I was little disconcerted about the Suns coughing up that big lead, but look at it this way: as nice as a full-on beatdown would have been, this way the Lakers and their fans got teased with an almost come-from-behind win that fell short.

You Learn Something Everyday
From here on out, when Boris gives it his all, it shall be referred to as a "Full French Effort" -- he could make even more rounds doing that over at DirtyScottsdale.com
