Suns Edge Cavs: 110 - 108

Well sports fans, I honestly don't know if the Suns gritted one out with heart and tremendous effort and skill or if they just got extremely lucky to have escaped with a W. Clearly, you can make the case for both. Or neither. Or aliens .

Let's start with the stats. First my all important assist differential. +8 which is close to the + 9 they are getting in wins. That's good. Rebounds -8. For the Suns that's even pretty good. Where its gets funky is that the Suns got 30 D rebounds and only 3 on the O while the Cavs ended up with 17 of 24 on the offensive end.

This leads us to the night's Harry Stat of the Night: The Cavs had 23 more shot attempts. And lost! Think about that one for a second. I know for Sun's fans its painful to give up 17 offensive boards but how would you like to be a Cav's fan....let's just stop and think about just how crappy that would be on so many levels....and lose a game where you get 23 more shot attempts. And they even had a respectable 45.6 FG%.

This all really begs the question. Does a team get more offensive rebounds because they are shooting poorly or do they get more attempts because they get more offensive rebounds? I have no clue. But I can tell you this. At one point in the fourth it was truly comical. The Suns were trying so hard to grab rebounds that four purple shirts would jump for the ball and somehow manage to tip it to a Cav. This happened at least 4 times in a two minute span. Unbelievable.

Oh, and the ref's did in fact suck but this seemed like a game where their suckiness went both ways and that ball bouncing thing worked in our favor as well as King James had a few key point blank layups just pop right out of the rim.

As for the flow of the game, you don't need to be a genius to figure this out. The Suns lack of effort on D in the first half made the Cavs look like an offensive juggernaut on the level of the Timberwolves giving up 69 points. But in the second half the good guys locked down and managed to hold the Cav's to a more Eastern team like 39 all the while rain three's like death from above and mixing in the occasion Amare feed in the post. The Suns really showed what a balanced offensive team they are with Bell and Nash showing that you can't just pack it in and then still have the ability to go to the beast down low late in the game when it absolutely positively has to be there in the paint.

Player of the game:
Has to be Raja with a team high 27 on 8 of 12 shooting with 6 threes along with his usual solid defense. Take that you haters who were ready to bench him!

Runners up:
TexSun would say King James I guess, since she seems to like to give it to someone on the other team in a throw back to little league where everyone's a winner. Me, I play with the big boys so it's going to the MVP Steve Nash. 37 minutes, 9 assists and 9 of 11 with a career tying 7 threes. He was just deadly. And I think we have to award the Full French as well for 9 assists, 11 points and a solid all around game.

As for the final two Suns plays to steal the win. Enjoy and as you watch note two things. On both plays its Diaw that makes the crucial feed and listen closely at the beginning of the final play and you will hear Eddie Johnson call his shot. Well, call Shawn's shot I guess you could say.

Oh, and this just in. The Lakers lost tonight to the Mavs so the Suns are now 2 1/2 games up.

Update [2008-1-26 10:32:15 by srp]: Here's an update on Hill’s back

"When I extended, I felt it, and I just missed it," Hill said. "It's funny, when you're in layup lines, you're kind of in control. When you have to go out there and play and react, I decided I was hurting the team more than helping. I hope it'll get right soon, but I'll just take my time and get it right."

The lower right back spasms might have occurred as a result of compensating movement while returning from the appendectomy after two weeks. He returned for a two-minute stint in the second quarter Friday but did not play again.

"My back just locked up," said Hill, whose status for Sunday's road trip finale at Chicago is uncertain. "I couldn't move out there."

Is there a 3/4 French?
I'd give him the Full French Effort if he had a few more boards -- he only had four.  A couple of those comical offensive boards you mentioned (4 times in a 2 minute span), occurred because Boris tipped it around instead of grabbed it.

I was watching with my brother and dad, and we were joking that every time Amare touches it, only one of three things can happen: offensive foul, defensive foul or basket.  He got the ball 6 or 7 times in a row at one point and one of those three happened each time.  I know he only ended up shooting 58% tonight, not quite as good as other nights, but I still don't understand why more doesn't run through.  And don't give me this "balanced scoring" stuff -- he gets a ton of "hockey assists" when he gets doubled.

Last note:

Despite this guy's website (http://heylarryhughespleasestoptakingsomanybadshots.com/), it looks like Larry Hughes' shot was okay but now he needs to take a class in executive decision-making.  Pass to LeBron James or Damon Jones?  Hmmm ...

No such thing
as sort of pregnant or 3/4 Full French.

Then it's all-or-nothing, it it?
If so, I refuse to award the Full French Award due to lack of rebounding effort.  We need to start setting some guidelies for a Full French Award.

Here is what I propose:

10 pts, 5 asts, 5 rebs and (a subjective category) good defense.  These are the MINIMUMS, a "Mendoza Line," if you will.

Great idea!
But maybe a better term for the requirements for the Full French is the Maginot Line....

If Boris holds the line of 10-5-5 then the award is earned.

You're Going G-Rating on Me?
Other than that, here's my problem:

The Maginot Line was a ridiculous waste of money and largely useless -- airplanes, anyone?

I'd think the opposite of the Full French Effort would be the Maginot Line.

Right
so if he beats the Maginot line he proves that his contract isn't a big waste of money :) and therefore is award the Full French. The opposite of the M-line.

Aha!
The Mendoza Line has been re-named the Maginot Line.  Got it.

Hill injury
Is the Hill injury a result of coming back too soon from the appendectomy? (something which may have contributed to the close Milwaukee game and the Minny loss by disrupting the chrmistry we had developed in the 4 game winning streak)?

a bit lucky
I think the Suns - even considering a good second half effort (at least tried to play some defense) - were a bit lucky in the end. When you allow 17 offensive rebounds and stay in the game (actually win it) because you shot over 30 times from 3-point range (ok, making more than 50%), I think more often than not you lose that game.
It was fun anyway....

Lucky is a bit strong, don't you think?
The Suns have designed an offense to be very efficient, so a bit of effort can put them over the top of most teans.  Lucky is at the gaming tables.  Now if you want to have an example of luck, look at the Miami defeat of Phoenix a while back.  They shot out of their minds.  Nothing in their performance this year suggests that they could do that.

Phoenix, on the other hand, has repeatedly shown from time to time that this kind of performance is not only possible, but probable.  If you noticed, Amare was a very effective decoy in the game.  The Cavs chose to collapse on him when he went to the basket, leaving the shooters open.  As we have seen in contests like the 3 point contest at the All-Star game, theser shooters are plenty capable of hitting 3/4 of their threes when left uncovered.  The percentage goes down to 40-50%  when shots are chalenged.

While I have joined the chorus in highlighting Coach D's deficiencies, I recognize his offensive genius in designing an offensive scheme that nobody has really ever stopped when executed properly.

It's not luck when this result is the goal of the design.  All the doom and gloom has caused us to lose perspective.

Efficiency on offense
110 points on 67 field goal attempts.  That's a yield of 1.64 points per shot.  I bet that ranks pretty high.  The Cavs had 90 shots.  If they matched our efficiency, they would have had 148 points.

An efficient offense can win if the team is bringing the energy.

Look at possessions
Look at possession, not attempts, when looking at efficiency.  Points per possession are the sign of offensive efficiency because it takes into account turnovers.  1.1 points per possession is about average, depending on the year.  If you can stay over that, you've got a pretty good offense.
