Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns vs. Seattle Supersonics

Phoenix Suns
vs.

Seattle Supersonics
22-9 9-22
8:30 PM Mountain / 10:30 PM Eastern
TV: My45 HD, TNT
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Earl Watson
Raja Bell SG Kevin Durant
Grant Hill SF Chris Wilcox
Shawn Marion PF Jeff Green
Amare Stoudemire C Kurt Thomas

It's retro night for the Suns broadcast, which is too bad for remote fans such as myself. In honor of the Suns' 40th anniversary, fans local to Phoenix will be treated to some special effects on the My45 broadcast that will give the appearance of Suns' broadcasts through the years. Al McCoy will even do a bit on TV, making this a double-bummer for those of us living outside of Phoenix. We'll have to make do with the TNT guys. (Now really, couldn't the NBA have done a TNT broadcast on a different Suns-Seattle game? How much fun that "through the years" thing would have been both to watch and to write about! Oh well, at least I can console myself with the knowledge that League Pass probably would have used the Seattle announcers anyway, since they seem to favor FSN broadcasts over all others. End rant.)

As for the game itself, it sounds like Kevin Durant will be back in the lineup, and Chris Wilcox might be too. Luke Ridnour is making his first appearance since Christmas. Seems like everyone wants to play the Suns. This will also be the first time the Suns will face Kurt Thomas since trading him for luxury tax avoidance over the summer. AZ Republic's Paul Coro thinks Brian Skinner's presence will cut down on the "teeth-gnashing and heckles".

Live blogging starts at tipoff. Today's YouTube is short and sweet--the first two points of the Suns' franchise:

on game - texsun
well, I read your above posting, and as much as I agree with you about missing the phx people for announcing, I'm so excited to see Durant and Thomas play against us that - that part doesn't matter to me so much. More than anything, I want to see the beast that Amare has been playing like this last week, I know I'm from the camp (small camp, hey...less wait for rides...ok too much into coasters..sorry) that wanted KG instead of Amare, but with the way amare has been playing, if he keeps that up, I like this teams chances this year to win it all. Balance though is something to worry about.

With Amare, its pretty clear he needs and deserves 20 or so fga(field goal attempts). Why, if you look at his percentage, its a no brainer, plus this gets him going, motivates him more to block ,rebound, etc. The only question then, (The Diaw project..I'll call it), Amare scoring so much, does that hurt our other players. Nash is so fair and even, but sometimes going to a dominate scorer is the way to go. My guess, they know this and wait to the fourth quarter to really try and take over if needed, with either Nash's shooting, Amare's unstoppable offense, or Hill's ability to drive to the hoop (reminds me of Wade), or Barbosa's speed, or Marion's hustle and ability to simply be quicker than everyone out there, I'm so glad he's still a sun, I hope he feels the same

Live blog delayed
Apologies to Jasonsuns1 and other remote Suns fans who do not have League Pass for my rant in the main post. I guess that's a little thoughtless of me to wish for this game to be league pass just so I can see the fancied-up broadcast, since it would have meant those without league pass wouldn't get to see it.

Anyway... That said, those of us outside of Phoenix aren't able to watch the game just yet because of a great Bulls-Blazers game that has gone into overtime and remains tight. So live blogging is on hold until further notice. (At least we get to watch a good game in the meantime, though).

hey- no apology needed...
i never thought I'd say this, but this bulls - blazers game is very exciting. In the future, when we have the ability to send people to the moon, I have a dream, sports tnt telecast might have the ability to have picture in picture, or even let the user switch between 2 choices......but it's a dream....similar to soda fountains...wait..they have those :-)

During the playoffs
I remember they actually showed the start of one Suns game on TBS because the early game went into overtime. Sort of wish for that now, but it'd interrupt the end of some crappy movie.

Portland is pretty impressive
They may not win this game, but they seem to be playing with that euphoria mentioned by Nash today.

Speaking of which,  I liked the glimpse on TNT of Nash wearing throwback headband. Wonder if he'll wear it while playing.

Yep
he's playing with it

haha cool
on the add playing on the tnt broadcast

not to be a jerk...but is amare really the smartest guy on the team when it comes to computers? Or Marion and fundamentals (his shooting form). (alright...I'm being a jerk)

Thanks
Cool. Please, not double OT.

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 8:50 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Not to gloat but...
this is broadcast is already interesting so far. The black and white graphics affect the starting line up list. Al McCoy is going to be in tow WITH George Allen.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO CAMERAS!
Man was it different to watch basketball then! There are no close ups or baseline cameras.

Well, that kind of stinks.
But I think I read they ARE going to progress through time, right, and 'improve the technology' as the game goes on?

I've used my computer to
calculate the chances of a double overtime, taking into account the weather, pizza, etc

and those 2 freethrows that just went in

99% it goes to another

TNT wakes up and puts the live scoring up. Seriously, what took them so long...The guy whose decision it is to post the score or not when a delay of telecast...I hope he doesn't get paid much

Hey PurplePinoy
Want to do the recap tonight since it looks like the game may be half over before the rest of us get to see it? Would love to have a writeup from someone who got to watch via the Phoenix broadcast.

Oh, for ......'s sake
Need to stop the bleeding.

Suns with 13 pts, :43 left in the 1st quarter. That's pitiful.

Sorry...
I'm enjoying this. I love games like this, even when it's two teams I don't normally watch. If the Suns game was good too, then I'd be rooting for this to end. But doesn't sound like our guys are putting on a very pleasant show anyway right now.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:17 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

OMG!
Wow... I really am starting to like the Blazers. Remind me of the Suns in 2005-06. (No franchise center in the middle? No problem!) So now we just need Ben Gordon to hit a three and send it into 3OT. (Hey, I'm enjoying this. Doesn't look like the Suns have showed up for their game yet anyway)

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:15 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

haha
yep, good attitude

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 9:17 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, that could have been a jump ball
How close did this come to being 3OT? Anyway it's all up to James Jones now.

...and he delivers. (Wasn't this guy a Sun at one point?) ;)

Nice block by JJ
He's playing better than Grant Hill tonight, I reckon.

Couldn't they switch to the other game
During some of these commercial breaks? Bah.

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:20 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Perspective
Us: Commercials are a necessary nuisance that we have to endure in order to watch the game.

Network: The game is a necessary nuisance that they have to show in order to make money from commercials

That was impressive
James Jones effectively won the game for Portland. Did we give up on him too soon?

Q2 9:08 - Marcus Banks in?
OK, just finally got on here after missing the first quarter and a half. Marcus Banks is in -- for those who have been watching, did someone get injured, or was this just a "nothing else was working" strategy?

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:25 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

LB has 3 fouls
And it was too early to put Nash back in. Marcus took a nice charge.

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:31 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently not
Starting lineup in. I don't see anyone missing. Maybe Coach D just decided he'd had enough of Boris and gave Banks a try.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:31 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Or what Sue said
LOL. Didn't notice the three fouls. Good point.

great
to add to this, durant played great and I didn't even get to see it

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 9:27 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

why not
amare for 3

I say let him take 3-4 more, not like what we were doing was working

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 9:28 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 8:17 - Amare for three!?
Wow... Ok. Well, I guess whatever works.

This is embarrassing (and I'm saying that not having even watched beyond a minute).

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:28 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

great hustle
with marion, 2 plays in a row

I've always thought marion and Nash make a great pair, Marion is great at the cut to the hoop behind a player and get the lob, plus Marion .... as everyone here knows...(no sarcasm...I'm being serious) is the fastest player we have, you'd think we'd take advantage of it more, Barbosa speed is a different type of speed, marion is more of the run the floor, never get too tired to stay ahead of everyone type of speed, maybe speed is the wrong word

endurance sounds better

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 9:33 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 5:38 - Looking better
...of course as I'm typing this, Durant still can't miss and then there's an ugly turnover. I'll shut up now.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:35 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

ok
seriously, the way amare dunks, that alone is worth the price of admission

WOW!!!!!!

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 9:36 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 4:41 - Amare takes out frustration!
That was a nice one.

Announcers are saying Thomas torched us in the first quarter. Bet that made the crowd happy.

Meanwhile, Boris goes to the rim. I think the headband is helping him.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:37 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Yep, it's the headband
We had the same thought. ;)

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:38 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Diaw needs to keep wearing this headband
Two nice plays - assist and bucket - and a rebound.

Nash for 3!!!

This one's in the bag. ;)

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:37 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 3:20 - Single-digits
Guess it's just as well that the first game went into 2OT. It took the Suns that long to show up apparently.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:38 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 2:27 - Hill redeems himself
...for the near Keystone Kops turnover.

I think maybe the Suns are taking this retro thing seriously. They started the first quarter looking like 2003-04. Now they look like 2004-05 (big spurts). By the end of the game, they'll look like 2006-07.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:41 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

LOL
That's funny.

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:42 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Q2 1:18 - Really cool near-assist
Hill missed the shot, though..

...Suns get a three anyway on the next possession, and the score is now a very respectable 40-45.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:44 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 00:28 - Nash hits from Dallas
Nash throws up a three from way out, and sinks it.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:45 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Suns outscored the Sonics
30-12 in the 2nd quarter.

by SueB on Jan 3, 2008 9:45 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

At the half
Terrible first quarter + Awesome second quarter = 43-45, Sonics.

Neither team shooting well. 37% for the Suns, 33% for the Sonics. Suns already have five blocks, but it's offset a bit with 7 turnovers to the Sonics' three. Rebounds are near even, although the Sonics do have 11 offensive rebounds. Free throw shooting seems to be the difference now with the Suns at 67% and the Sonics at 78%.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 9:49 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

think I'll unload this in a minute

the courtside live thing from nba.com is flash, you get the idea, if a coder can really get sharp at flash, can make some fun stuff, make some money also

:-)

I just saw a little while ago the image of nash with the orange bandanna.... wish he'd kept it on

Q3 10:49 - Way to avoid the charge and travel
Nice move by Amare, slithering in for two.

...and Marion's score on the next possession ties it at 47.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:07 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q3 9:18 - Suns take the lead
51-49 on the Raja Bell long two.

...doesn't last long as Durant brings it back to 51- all.

..ok, scratch that. Steve Nash nails another from way behind the three line. He's 3-4 from three. Think that shoulder might be feeling better!

Q3 7:00 - When did Earl Watson...
...become an All-Star?

...and Amare gets it back emphatically on the other end.

very simple...
amare is attacking the hoop just wonderfully

Q3 5:35 - Seattle back on top
...after a couple of easy misses under the basket on two straight possessions, and some missed free throws by Amare.

I already knew this
but Durant is running away with rookie of the year, wow! This kid is awesome, I wish Oden was playing, I'm excited to see him next year.

Q3 5:11 - Diaw

Q3 2:53 - Making it fun to watch
I'll say one thing for this game--the teams are sure making it fun to watch. Nash seems to have a little extra "pep" in both his passing and shooting. Amare is dunking even more emphatically than usual. And the Nash-to-Marion alley-oops are back. Now we just need LB to get going.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:25 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q3 1:03 - Nice defense...
...and nice offense by Raja Bell. Hanging in there without Nash and Amare on the floor so far.

LB's at the line for two. Two makes and it's 70-63 for the largest Suns lead of the night.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:31 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q3 00:1.3 - LB getting it done at the line
Some wild attempts from LB, but he's getting it done from the line. The Suns will close the quarter up nine after he makes the latest pair.

72-63. Kind of low for a Suns game, but we'll take it.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:33 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 11:50 - Double-digits
Suns open with an and-one for the 12-point lead. 75-63.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:38 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 10:46 - Sweet assist by Diaw...
...leads to sweet three by Marion. That shuts me up from complaining about the lack of defense on the previous inbounds pass that led to the easy Collison make.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:40 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 9:45 - Three pointing them to death
LB hits what looked like a bad shot.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:42 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 9:08 - Ugh free throws
Grant Hill misses two. What is it with our free throws?

...fortunately, the Suns defense gets it done on the other end.

...and now Diaw and his headband get fouled.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:44 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 6:03 - Shootout in the 4th
Here I was thinking this game was going to be lucky to end up in the 90's. Neither team playing especially lockdown defense now, but as long as the teams trade two for two, time is on the Suns' side.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 10:50 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 5:15 - Nice Nash imitation from Ridnour...

Q4 2:29 - Collison gone
Fouls out, and sends Amare to the line. A make here should pretty much do it.

uh oh

by jasonsuns1 on Jan 3, 2008 11:06 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 1:40 - Ok, I should have been more specific
Making BOTH would have made it nine points, or three three-pointer possessions. But I probably jumped the gun anyway, as it is now firmly in nail-biting territory with a four-point game and 55 seconds to go, with (I think?) Seattle getting the ball. 98-94, Suns.

by TexSUN on Jan 3, 2008 11:07 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q4 00:55 - Make that Suns ball
Raja was fouled instead of stepping out of bounds. At the line for two, so back to a six-point lead.
