Suns Make Statement, Set Season High in Win over Nuggets (137-115)
I think I'm going to start a tradition around here. A day before every game against a Western conference playoff team, I'm going to write a pessimistic semi-rant about how the Suns just can't seem to get it done against the best in the West.
OK, that might be taking it a little too far. Something tells me after Saturday's fourth quarter debacle against the Hornets, the Suns really didn't need to hear from a no-name blogger that it was time to make a statement. And boy did they ever! The Suns unleashed an offensive fury from both sides of the three-point line, and obliterated the Nuggets who, in all fairness, were at the tail end of a four games in five nights stretch. Now that that little caveat is out of the way, lets talk about how the Suns put four guys over 20 points, six in double-digits, and logged 13 blocks on their way to a new season high 137 points to the Nuggets' 115.
The Suns had it going from the opening tip. They hit seven of their first eight shots, had 46 points in the first quarter, and 78 by halftime. Allen Iverson did his best to keep the Nuggets in it, both by scoring and getting various Suns into foul trouble. But the plan backfired a little as the foul trouble paved the way for Marcus Banks to get an early call. Banks not only helped slow down Iverson's scoring barrage, he also was absolutely on fire from behind the three point line. He hit both of his attempts in the first half, and carried it over nicely into the second half where he hit five more, some of which were way behind the line. He ended up with 23 points, 7-of-8 from the field (all threes), two blocks, and an enormous case for more playing time.
But as good as Banks was, Shawn Marion was even better. He had Player of the Game locked up by the third quarter. The Matrix lit it up from behind the arc in the first half, and when that stopped working in the second, he stayed productive in other ways with a team-high six blocks to go with his also team-high 14 rebounds and four assists. He finished with 27 points, going 5-of-9 from three and 11-of-16 overall. For those who like the plus/minus stat, he led the team there too with a +27.
Amare Stoudemire and Grant Hill had solid games as well despite foul trouble. Both scored 20 points (Hill on 8-of-11 from the field), and Amare added 10 rebounds. Steve Nash (13 points, 10 assists) and Leandro Barbosa (12 points) completed the double-digit brigade. Overall, the Suns shot an amazing 64.5% from three, hitting a franchise record-tying 20 (of 31), and shot 54% overall. The stellar shooting and the "block party" offset the 10 rebound deficit on the boards, 23 of which were on the offensive end. Rebounding deficiencies aside, I'm sure I speak for Suns fans everywhere when I say this kind of effort is what we'd like to see every game.
Player of the Game: Shawn Marion. A record-setting night for the Matrix on both threes and blocks. More, please.
Runner-Up: Allen Iverson with a game-high 32 points. Nice try, but he couldn't win the game by himself.
Honorable Mention: Marcus Banks had a career night too with his seven three-pointers.
Grading the Game: Grading the Game is back to award the first A+ of the season. Let's do it again.

Epic PWNAGE!!!!!!!
What really through me for a loop was seeing Banks in the game. And was absolutely amazed me that he seemed more than comfortable with his role, absolutely destroy the Nuggets from outside. God I hope we see more of this cause we really need some one to step up and take the slack that Diaw has left behind. Well we'll just have to see how long the Banks experiment goes on, hopefully it works.
Other than that this game was over after the first quarter. The Suns had the threes going, the blockparty going and just about everything going. Hopefully (please please please) this is the sign we've been looking for with this team.

I wanted to comment on the same thing...
And if a team doesn't want to be 'shown up' like that they shouldn't let it happen to them. All's fair...

wow
Apparently the nuggets coach and Iverson were really ticked off that the suns hit 2 three pointers at the end "rubbing it our faces" or "showing us up", well, part of me understands this. Another part of me has a big message to the nuggets coach, and Iverson.
I'll type it in simple words for them to understand... "MOST OR ALL OF OUR STARTERS WERE OUT, THE PLAYERS THAT TRIED HARD THERE AT THE END, IF YOU WERE PART OF THE SUNS BENCH AND PLAYED 1 MINUTE A YR, YOU'D UNDERSTAND WHY THEY TRY TO PLAY
AS HARD AS THEY CAN IN THAT ONE MINUTE."
This reminds me of the unwritten rules of baseball, a bunch of sh.t if you ask me. Some teams get hot, that's the way it goes. I honestly think its being poor losers to whine about stuff like this....sadly I think the suns coach has some of this in him. Complaining about the Lakers and timeouts, maybe he should be more focused on how the lakers beat us instead of timeouts.
Personally, when the lakers were burying us on xmas day recently, I wasn't saying to myself...
hey..why are the mean lakers still scoring, thats not fair, they're winning by too much, blah blah blah, actually, I think what I was saying was, wheres the remote so I don't have to watch the last 5 minutes. Simple thing I don't think some pro athletes have figured out, the goal is to win, not make friends. Part of me thinks a team that loses by 20+, maybe they deserve it to be rubbed in a little (in a good way, not a bad way). Meaning this
put yourself in the suns shoes after losing badly to the lakers
i'd hope I'd be smart enough as a player to realize we lost because we played poorly, etc etc and would be highly motivated to figured out how to learn from it. Someone that wants to seriously be great at something, they learn from their mistakes, they don't bitch about timeouts...and with a sad feeling, I've finally started leaning towards the thought some others here are voicing, I think part of our problem is the coach, not that there aren't others, but thats definitely some of the problem. If Banks doesn't start getting 20+ minutes a game, then our coach is an idiot, Banks has easily won that much...
For Diaw, I like him, he seems like a nice guy, maybe he can become the team cook, I hear french food is pretty good, but he shouldn't be playing as much,

NY Brawl
Sounds like this is all just bluster to get his team fired up a bit. I wouldn't make much of it.

running it up
Similarly, Karl says why were they shooting 3 pointers? Well, maybe the Suns needed to work on that, and what better way to do it than against an NBA- calibre defense? There's too much strutting around, saying, "You disrespectin' me?" nonsense in the NBA. Just win, baby, and put on a show for the fans.

Thoughts on this game
And now finally - I know you have all been waiting anxiously! - here they are:
- My intitial reaction after just the shere joy of the game was to write this off. Any game you shoot 65% from 3 and "only" 54% overall is clearly an anomoly. Some wins and some loses are just out there and this was one of those. However, there were some huge bright spots worth talking about.
- The defensive intensity and even more the physicallity of the game were very impressive. When was the last time a Suns team beat someone up like they did Monday night. We saw it from the very beginning. The Suns were hitting people hard and not allowing easy lay ups. The foul trouble was actually a good thing. Even Diaw had 5 fouls! It slowed the Nug's down and kept Melo out of the contest and showed everyone that we can play tough. Here's the money quote from Melo in the Denver Post:
"I wasn't getting any calls once again tonight," he said. "And tonight was really brutal out there for me. I know I don't really talk about it that much, I don't like to make excuses, but tonight was an exception."
I am not sure what he mean's by not getting calls since the Nug's had 40 FTA's to 18 for the Suns.
The best part though was the continuation of a trend noted in the EV Trib:
Getting more defensive:
After losing to the Lakers on Christmas Day, the Suns ranked 25th in the NBA in field-goal percentage allowed at 46.2 percent. But during a 5-1 run over the last six games, the team has held opponents to 40.7 percent shooting and improved to 17th (45.3 percent) -- including a loss to New Orleans where the Hornets shot 50 percent and put up 118 points.
Granted, holding down the Clips and Kings aren't huge accomplishments it is still a great sign of improved defensive effort.
Let's see now if they can keep this up...which really means if Amare can keep it up.

Pacers
The damage was done by Dunleavy, O'Neal, and Tinsley to a great extent, wih that trio shooting 30-56. we can handle JO getting 30 points, but not MikeJr going off. I want to see Boris check him, and how about Skinner on JO? If Amare stays out of foul trouble, I see no reason why he can't score 40 again. Actually, if he stays out of foul trouble, I don't see why he doesn't average 40 points.
Nobody has been playing particularly well in the last two games for the Pacers, but Granger has been OK, and Dunleavy has hit his average. Tinsley returned against Utah, but is still less than 100%. I say the suns win 117-105, with Amare going for 40 and Banks having a good game. I would like to predict a good game for Doris, but I just can't. I think the Banks contract will turn out OK but Diaw's will mess the Suns up for years.
