When is the #1 team in the West an underdog to the #8 team in the West? When the #1 team is short-handed, and the #8 team is a matchup problem even on a good day. The last time the Suns beat the Warriors, Mike Dunleavy was still in Oakland and Stephen Jackson was still in Indiana. Since the trade that sent Jackson and Al Harrington out West last season, the Warriors have beaten the Suns fairly convincingly in two meetings. And that was with Shawn Marion's defense on the team.

It doesn't sound like Shaq will play tonight, which might be for the best anyway under the circumstances. Keys for the game? Solid play by Boris and Amare. Especially Amare. Versus Chris Webber, that's one matchup we should own.

[Update 02/13/08 18:26 MT]: It's official. Shaq sits this one out and tomorrow also, according to the Arizona Republic. We'll have to wait until after the All-Star break to see what the big guy can do. Bummer.

Jackson bailed them out against Washington on Monday with 41. Webber didn't help a lick.

Diaw is the key agin tonight. If he produces, we win. He must play good defense on Jackson.

I think DJ is the key to a win tonight. If DJ can play solid defense on both Jackson, Baron, and Ellis(ok so that could be hard for a rookie who probably won't be getting more than several minutes)and keep his offense flowing, we could make an honest stand. Nash should only play 20-25 minutes. I don't want to see him worn down and embarassed by getting posted up on every single play. Or the subsequent double team to help Nash, where the ball is swung to a shooter. In sum, the key lineup tonight should be Barbosa and DJ, playing defense on GS' tough guards. Also, Diaw will then clearly need to step it up to carry the slack with Nash out.

Maybe not as crazy as it sounds

I wouldn't go as far as to say DJ is the key, but I haven't forgotten that game last season where Marcus Banks, of all people, played a huge role in a second unit that darn near saved the day. DJ could provide a similar boost tonight, and if he's getting it done and Nash isn't, I say let the kid go for it. (Nash has looked to me like he could use a break anyway lately). I still say the key is Amare, though. Feed him as often as possible and let the beast do his thing. And he needs to stay out of foul trouble too, obviously.

Tomorrow's game should be...interesting. We either see a depleted Mavs team, or one trying to work in three different new players on a single day's practice if that. And if Shaq plays after all, then we have both teams trying to work in brand new major cogs. I love it.

removing my suns fan bias, i still have to side with shaq...walton sounds mad arrogant when saying "shaq's arrogant is an insult..."

sure, he took a portland team to a championship, but he also jumped on the celtics train to another as a sixth man while shaq actually was a very valuable piece of the miami team and also took 3 of his own teams to championships...no comparison between shaq and walton in my opinion

oh, and luke walton might wanna sit out the pheonix lakers game if shaq plays...im not sure how shaq will respond to seeing walton on the back of a jersey...he might fall on luke and end his career or something

Bizarro ball

In their first four possessions the Suns pound it down low with Diaw on Baron and then go to Amare in the post.

While the Dub's and running on everything with two down field passes and some very quick shots.

The biggest matchup problem for us is Amare guarding Al Harrington (what's up w/ that dude lined skull?). Amare struggles to cover him out at the arc and of course Nash can't stay with Ellis at all.

Warriors up six after one. The broadcast showed Raja leaving the game. Is he pulling a Marion? (Thinking it's half-time)?

Anyway, not a lot of defense by either team so far, but better offense by the Warriors who are shooting 59% and have four extra attempts to boot. Suns are at 56%. Baron Davis is looking like he may be headed for one of those nights where anything he throws up goes in. Hey, Miami: Can we borrow the Matrix back for a night?

At the half

Nice run by the Warriors to open up a four-point lead in the final minute. They're shooting is "down" to 51%, but the Suns' is down to 45%. Of course, that stat is a bit tainted by that tip-in debacle earlier. Monta Ellis is unstoppable so far, 10-14 for 20. So far, he's winning the battle with LB who is 3-5 for 9. Amare leads the way for the Suns with 13, even having to sit out most of the second quarter with foul trouble. Suns need to figure out a way to blow open a lead here. I don't think this is a team you want to be in a nailbiter with at the end (as the final minutes of the half showed).

I've seen better reffing in high school basketball games.

Starting with that call going against Barbosa when the ball went out because of the ref interfering with the path of the ball, it's been bad call after bad call.

They probably drew up a play for the win thinking ahead to the Dallas game tomorrow night. We're already shorthanded enough without Shaq, D'Antoni probably wants to ensure we've got enough gas in the tank for tomorrow's game.

warriors fan here,

win or lose, that was a great game, and it concerns me that this might be the last true Warriors-Suns run run run game ever. Let's hope Webber and Shaq don't change the teams too much.

Oh, by the way TexSUN, that "dagger three" you thought Baron Davis hit to put the Warriors up 117-113 was actually hit by Kelenna Azubuike, the future stud.

ELLIS, wow, he was fantastic, announcers sure called this correctly, what a fun game to watch, as far as shaq goes, can I reply back in a few weeks? Because I hear you loud and clear on your statement, but, I haven't seen Amare play like that since the playoffs, and Hill, I was much more concerned about losing our best defender in marion, but I'm feeling really good about our team now.

And as for you guys, many of the games you play (g.s.), it's pretty clear that your team can beat anyone in the league, very impressive game by g.s.

not me

This was a great game for us, it matters little that we lost, this is one loss, to lose like this, I feel fine. We fought our way back in and almost won it even after a couple of really questionable calls. On the ref getting in the way, hard to find a rule on the web on this, everything comes up about the gambling scandal.

I take away 3 very important things from this game

Amare is awesome, even with the missed freethrow, he was awesome, he was doing many things I never see him do, did you see some of the screens he was setting, awesome
G.Hill is awesome....
Even though we lost, this is the type of play I expect and love from our suns....this gets me very excited, simply awesome.....one thing about g.s. that our players really need to be thinking about more if we meet them in the playoffs, they're faster than f..., seriously, they are masters at stealing the ball, etc.
