Jason Kidd to Dallas?

Since it looks like this is pretty near official, I thought I'd create a separate place to discuss it.

First the story on ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3244102

As leery as I usually am of posting anything that starts with "sources say", the Shaq trade has emboldened me a bit. So, assuming this deal is to be done as stated, it has the Mavericks sending a full third of their roster out to the Nets, and receiving three players back in return (including one in a separate deal):

To New Jersey:

  • Devin Harris
  • Jerry Stackhouse (probably to be bought out and maybe re-signed by the Mavs in 30 days)
  • DeSagna Diop (expiring contract -- could the Nets buy him out too?)
  • Devean George (ditto)
  • Maurice Ager
  • Cash (league-max $3million)
  • 2008 and 2010 first round picks
To Dallas:
  • Jason Kidd
  • Malik Allen
  • Antoine Wright (in a separate deal)
From Mavs Moneyball:
It sucks, and it's stupid, and it sucks.

Tell us how you really feel, Wes.

Oh, and welcome to our world...

[Update 02/13/08 7:00 PM MT]: Looks like the Mavs and Nets have hit a speed bump in their trade plans. Devean George ain't having it. This guy has a no-trade clause? Really?

Cuban is my New Hero!
Thank you Marc Cuban. I love you!

The stregnth of the Mavs has been their depth and flexibility. Damp too slow to cover Amare? Go w/ a faster Diop. Need to run? Give the ball to Harris.

Now all they have is an aging Kidd (who was never a good shooter) and J-Ho and Dirk. I guess they figure they need to move the ball more but is Kidd really that much of an offensive threat that you can't just man up with a good defensive guard like Bell or DJ and then stay home on Dirk and J-Ho?

I think the Mavs just seriously hurt their chances.

I don't see how Stack doesn't get picked up by someone out there. I don't really understand this rule - but you have to think someone is going to make him an offer. The Hornets. Orlando. The Bulls. Even the Celtics. That guy has serious value left for a contender and I don't see how he lasts 30 days for the Mavs to pick up.

As for Diop. That's a guy that I would have LOVED to see as a Sun playing next to Amare. I don't see now how we could swing that but he's a perfect role playing big man. Of course now we have He Who Can't Be Named for two more years so forget that.

Wow - I can't wait to see the Mavs on Thursday now! Go Cuban!

Alan Henderson rule?
I can't remember which one it was, but I'm pretty sure that the Mavericks are the reason that 30-day rule exists to begin with. I think it was Alan Henderson. But regardless, a couple of years ago, they traded a player who was immediately waived, then re-signed him. Basically, it created a way for them to get a player they wanted without really giving up anything in return. I think Keith Van Horn may have been the other half of that trade; can't remember for sure. But anyway, the next CBA added the rule that you have to wait 30 days before re-signing a player you trade that is subsequently waived.

Kidd to Dallas
Horrible trade for the Mavs, and great for us.  Here in Dallas, the fans are 95% against the trade.  Dallas just shot themselves in the foot.  Stackhouse was the heart on this team, Harris was the future, and Diop was the defensive big man.

The radio guys claim that Cuban has a secret agreement with Stack and Diop to come back after the eNets buy them out.  Hello, David Stern?

Wouldn't be surprised...
...to see both Diop and Stackhouse back with the Mavs. That's why I'm prefacing everything I say about this trade with that caveat from here on out. But barring that, this looks like a great deal--for us.

Kidd is seriously Underrated
Old? How'd he do this summer with the best players in the NBA???

Harris is a great player, but he can't touch Kidd's level.

Good trade for both sides. Dirk and Josh can get easier shots from Kidd, they never had a true PG. Kidd doesn't need to shoot for them.

by alta on Feb 13, 2008 3:02 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Um....
I believe they had a true PG a few years ago that they decided not to re-sign because he was "too old" at age 30. Some guy named "Nash" I think it was.

Cuban's hand forced by Suns?
Keeping up with the Joneses can make you do some stupid things, huh, Tex?

Not a Big Change
The Mavs do lose flexibility and depth, but they just added Jason Kidd.  He can't shoot, but he can do everything else.

From a box-score standpoint its a wash, but Kidd does bring a lot of experience and will to win to the game.

Cuban pulled a Saver and went all-in.  They're going to suck in a few years (just like the Suns will).

Kidd the lionhearted? who are we Kidding?
The national media seems to think this puts the Mavs over the top.  Michael Wilbon of PTI thinks so, and so does Tony Kornheiser.  Although I think Kornheiser is a fool - look at his work on the football telecasts.  The ESPN folks - Broussard, last night's announcers - seem to think that Kidd is Oscar Robertson reincarnate, and is a great leader who will spark the Mavs to the promised land with his lion heart.  Give me a break.  I don't see it.  Oscar was a scoring machine, and he passed and rebounded.  Think Barkley with 10 assists per game.  That's Oscar. The thing is, Kidd never helped us much.  I always felt he choked in the playoffs for us.  And his Finals appearances with the Nets were the result of a very weak Eastern Conference playoff field, and then got plastered in his two Finals appearances.

Mavs fan here...
I hate it the Kidd trade. But not as much as I would hate the Shaq trade if I were a PHX fan.

Stack
Also Stackhouse is already quoted as saying he isn't going ANYWHERE else, he's taking 30 days to heal up his hammy and gear up for the playoffs.

And Mark Cuban isn't trading for Kidd either
...and the Suns aren't trading a piece of their core.

That said, I agree Stack will likely end up back with the Mavs, and I'm wondering if maybe Diop will too. That would tip the trade back in the Mavs' favor.

Hmmm.... Miami buys out Marion...Suns resign...naw. Would never happen.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 3:55 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

nice idea
but it's obvious that stack ad the mavs like each other, marion couldn't be happier to be away from us. Too bad though, your idea is nice. On stack going back, you'd think stern and the popovich commission would try and stop that, but, after the laker fiasco, i figure any team can do what they want. whats the trade deadline? the 14th?

Tomorrow Night?
Doesn't this make Shaq's appearance tomorrow night all-the-more-likely?

He gets to try out his new team against an under-manned Maverics team.

Was wondering the same thing
Although, I suppose it's possible the new recruits are there in time to play the game. Seems unlikely, but I don't think there are any rules prohibiting Kidd and crew from flying straight to Phoenix to meet their new team once the deal is finalized. I kind of like the idea of Shaq in his first game with the Suns vs. Kidd in his first game with the Mavs. Chaos reigns!

Wow, just wow
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3244818
With the New Jersey Nets poised to complete a blockbuster deal to send Jason Kidd back to Dallas on Wednesday night, Mavericks reserve forward Devean George has unexpectedly exercised his right to block the trade, according to NBA front-office sources.

No disrespect to Devean George, but he just doesn't seem like "no-trade clause" material to me.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 7:02 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Trade held up by George
He obviously had a reason for asking for the clause.  Maybe he doesn't like cold weather.  The Mavs were dumb enough to give the clause to him.  Why would they give it to a player that wasn't 'no-trade material'? Maybe George wouldn't sign otherwise.  So thiis is the Mavs fault, not Devean George's fault.  If your employer gave you some special consideration at hiring, wouldn't you exercise it to avoid.....New Jersey?  Have you ever been to New Jersey, the land of swamps, landfills and Newark?

What's the deal on the re-sign
What's the deal with the thirty day wait rule?  Can Stack just wait it out and re-sign with the Mavs at the end of thirty days no matter what other offers are made?

by Dunk it Boris on Feb 13, 2008 10:12 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

If he wants to, yep.
If he gets bought out, he can just hang tight for 30 days, and re-sign with the Mavs if they still want him. Plus, he can re-sign cheap, because he'll still be getting paid from the buyout. It's a risk, but the Mavericks seem to be good at those sorts of deals.

...of course, all this hangs on Devean George having a change of heart.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 10:44 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Snag in deal
The Mavs will just re-work the deal with New Jersey, maybe add another player.  But this doesn't do anything for George's working conditions in Dallas.  Maybe this is a good time for us to sweep in and snag Devean?  We're a warm-weather place.
