Suns Lose Heartbreaker to Warriors (120-118)

Well, the Suns came close to securing their first win over the Warriors since that Stephen Jackson/Al Harrington trade a year ago, but close isn't good enough for a win. They had their chances, though. Amare Stoudemire almost had a three-point play with three seconds to go, but ended up with just a trip to the line where he bricked the first free throw. Monta Ellis returned the favor on the other end leaving the Suns an opening with 2.4 remaining, but Leandro Barbosa's three-pointer bounced off the rim and the game was over. Close but no cigar.

This was an up-and-down game where neither team was particularly successful at guarding the other. Ellis couldn't miss, Baron Davis "out-Nashed" Steve Nash, and Stephen Jackson hit timely threes to keep the Suns from gaining control. For whatever reason, this matchup just doesn't work for our guys right now. Still, a much closer game than the previous time, so maybe they'll break through in the next one. (Wow, that was painful to type).

A few quick notes before calling it a night:

  • If Grant Hill keeps playing like he did tonight, I may officially rescind any and all objections to the Shaq trade. Or at least my objection to the part that required Shawn Marion's departure. How's this for a line in the boxscore?: 26 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, 11-of-18 shooting. Hill hustled, scrapped, and poured everything he had into this game like it was the NBA Finals. Amare owes him a beer after missing that free throw.
  • Speaking of beer, Al Harrington gave the Suns a free two-points when he inadvertently tipped in a Suns miss trying to snare the rebound. He would have been buying rounds for everyone on his team if LB had nailed that three at the buzzer.
  • Have I mentioned lately how much more I like D.J. Strawberry manning the backup point guard spot better than Marcus Banks? Or even LB for that matter. If the kid could shoot, we win this game (he was 1-of-8). But even without a shooting touch, there's something about having D.J. on the floor that just works. The ball keeps moving, and the Suns don't fall apart with Nash and Amare resting.
  • I said a key to the game was to "feed the beast", but the beast has to stay on the floor. Amare's foul trouble mid-way through the second quarter didn't help. He still got a nice, fat double-double, though, with 29 points and 13 rebounds, and went 10-of-14 from the field. But that free throw... Amare, you're killing me.
  • When I said Steve Nash got "out-Nashed" by Baron Davis, I didn't mean to imply that Nash stunk up the floor. Other than the seven turnovers, he had a nice line with 20 points, 12 assists and 7-of-13 from the field. He made some clutch plays down the stretch, and did his usual Nash things. He can't guard Monta Ellis, though. Not. at. all.
Player of the Game: I really have to give this to Monta Ellis don't I? He was absolutely unguardable tonight, scored 37 points, had nine rebounds, and really just willed his team to victory. I'm making him share the honor with Grant Hill, though. No runner-ups tonight. Both of these guys deserve the nod.

Up Next: The Suns return home to face the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow night. Or what's left of the Dallas Mavericks, if they manage to convince Devean George to change his mind. The NBA - where inexplicable no-trade clauses happen trade restrictions happen. (It isn't a no-trade clause. It's a one-year contract/Bird rights rule).

DJ Strawberry
We knew when we drafted him that he had difficulties with his shooting mechanics.  But he really impressed me tonight with his hustle and Defensive IQ.

Despite constantly being knocked for his shooting, he was unafraid to take the shots down the stretch.  That says a lot for his maturity.  With time and work from the assistant coaches, his shot will steadily improve as his confidence does (which of course is also dependant on playing time, which might lessen as Shaq joins the team).

Also, how about that great pass to Hill in the paint tonight?  That showed some Offensive IQ as well.  In a couple years we might just be talking about what a steal this kid is.

Great points in DJ
I totally agree that in a year or two once his shot improves that he will be a solid NBA player.

He is atheltic but also very smart on the court.

Did anyone see Shaq grab and hug him at the time out right after he missed an open 3? Got to love that.

Hell of a Game
Watched the game while at work.  Man that was one hell of a game!!  I can live with the loss.  This is still very much a transitional team now, we not only have to adjust to life without Trix but we still have yet to even starting to adjust to having Shaq.

So though we lost there are some good things to get outa this game.

DJ is looking alot more worthwhile than Banks

Grant Hill is finding his grove.

Diaw appears to have found his balls.  Now he just needs to find his shooting touch.

Not to mention that STAT is really playing like a beast now.

So with all that in mind the HUGE xfactor is Shaq and even Shaq doesnt kick ass like we hope this team does appear to be much more motivated and energized now.

Overall i'm looking for good things to ensue after the All Star break; be it from Shaq or from this seemingly revitalized team.

last minute of game
This game was about turnovers, pure and simple.  The Warriors seemes to get all the loose balls.

The last two plays killed me.  The Stoudemire play should have been a three point play, except that Steve's pass was slightly off.  It bounced off Amare's leg.  He was able to grab it, but that split second that he lost gave the defender enough time to slide over and block STAT's path to the basket.

The last play was botched also.  I think Amare was supposed to screen for LB for an open three.  But they lost precious seconds fumbling the exchange, and the play appeared rushed.  I would have swung it immediately over to Nash in the corner.  When the ball went in to Amare, the corner defender came to the ball.  Another option would have been something toward the basket, but I think D'Antoni was clearly thinking three at that point.

This year seems to be a bad year for last second plays.

I don't think so
As soon as I saw LB has the ball out of bounds I knew it was coming back to him.

The play worked perfectly and LB got up a clean look. He just missed it. He had gotten hot from three and had made some clutch 3's recently at home against the Hornets.

You could argue they should have gone for the tie but on the road with a game tonight I don't really have a problem w/ it.

And did you see Nash grabbing Ellis' jersey and holding Baron as well. That was a veteran last second play daring the ref's to call him for the hold. Dude is slacking a bit but he's still got huge stones.

Last play
If that was the play, it sure looked shaky to me, like STAT hesitated.  If the play was

In to Amare
Amare draws D
Flip back to LB
Square up and shoot

I wasn't watching LB closely, but it seemed he rushed the shot.

In fact, it looked like the Suns were hesitating a lot in that game.  Nash passed up lots of shots, so did Boris.  whereas the Warriors were stepping into their shots and firing at will.  the only Suns doing this were Hill and Amare.

Sorry TexSun but I disagree
Hill did have a great game but those rebound totals aren't exactly normal given how small GSW plays. Al Harrington was their center more of the game and he's 6'9".

What stands out for me was how the Suns weren't able to get key stops late in the game let alone any kind of defensive hold in the 4th quarter as we had seen all year.

There are some team where we won't miss Marion as much but this one we did. You have him on the floor with Hill and Bell and now you can cover Ellis, Baron and SJax and hide Nash on someone else. How many times have we seen Marion come in and shut down a hot player like Ellis.

Of course the way Ellis has been playing its just as likely that he would have still be unstoppable. Everything that guy threw near the rim fell in....

by Phoenix Stan on Feb 14, 2008 7:20 AM MST   0 recs

I'm just saying....
The Suns were creamed by GSW in their previous two meetings. (And yes, the one last year was a creaming even if the final score didn't reflect that). They had basically the same team out there minus Banks and Marion, plus DJ and Hill playing over his head, and ended up with their best showing against the Warriors since Jackson and Harrington came to Oakland. It doesn't mean that Marion isn't a better player than those two, just that maybe the intangibles work out in a way that makes the overall result better. My raving about Hill wasn't just because he had huge numbers in the boxscore. Those rebounds didn't just fall in his lap. He was hustling his butt off out there.

by TexSUN on Feb 14, 2008 7:43 AM MST to parent up   0 recs

BTW
Exactly where would the Suns "hide" Nash in this game, even with Marion in the lineup?

by TexSUN on Feb 14, 2008 7:45 AM MST to parent up   0 recs

Good game but..
I know that we are playing short handed but Amaré needs to make those free throws!!!!. The turn over by LB with the ref kicking the ball out of bounce really pissed me off, that was a key play. Right after that the Warriors nailed a three to make it a 4 point lead.

I think it was a good effort, we got them into early foul trouble and were able to play at their frenetic tempo. I hate to say this but Nash defense was HORRRIBLE, you could see Monta's face when Nash was on him, He was drooling to take him to the basket.

We can't continue to play like this, we need Shaq (I never thought I would be saying this).

Another big test for them tonight...

free throws
It is difficult to criticize Amare and his free throws when he had just hit 36 straight.  what big man does that? I understand that the clutch ones are more important.  I choose to focus more on the Suns' lack of execution and the 19 turnovers.  Specifically, it seemed the loose balls all went to the Warriors.

i agree
i was thinking the same thing, 36 in a row, holy mama! Yes it was a tough one to miss, but I was still impressed with the suns. The warriors are such a re stealing team, if we can handle playing them and cut down on our turnovers, we can handle any teams swarming d.

re = great

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 14, 2008 9:48 AM MST to parent up   0 recs

i agree
but I don't think much of anyone could've stopped Monta. This is weird to say, but I'm wondering how much shaq would've helped/hurt the suns. Obviously to have a big guy in there with amare would've clogged up the driving lanes, which brought many g.s. points. And g.s. state lose to utah in the playoffs last yr, a team that had bigs and could clog up the lane much better than dallas could. BUt g.s. is such a fast team... still, even with loss, I am very pleased with this game.

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 14, 2008 9:45 AM MST to parent up   0 recs

Ellis
He has been shooting over 70 percent and averaging 26 points over the last 7 games or so, so nobody has been stopping him.  70 percent for a 6'2" guard.  Holy smokes!

Another player the Suns could have had if they wanted him.

Playoff matchups
Don't look now, but if the season ended today, we would play the Warriors.  I don't know if we win that matchup.  Even if we do, it will be a difficult 7 game series.

Along those lines, this year's WC playoffs will be brutal.  the team that comes out of the west will have earned it, and may face a Piston or Celtic team riding a wave.

I haven't seen such a hard path to win in a very, very long time. Should make it all the more fun to win!

Heart of a champion
Did you hear the audio on D'Antoni in the timeout when we fell behind 119-113?  He basically called them out and said this is all heart.  That's what it takes to be a champion".  They responded by shutting GS down the rest of the way, but could not score that last FG due to steve's low pass that Amare somehow snagged, but too late to have a clear path toi the basket.

I wish we played with that urgency more.  If we did, I would bet on us to win the championship.

Urgency
I'm totally agree with your comment about urgency and the championship.  As much as I loved Marion, he and Banks were not a good influence on the team when it came to urgency and making things count.

Also, although I know how much it sucks to be plastered to the bench during games, some of it falls onto Marks and Piatkowski as well.  They've got to get their teammates pumped up.

The same thing was happening to the Suns in 92.  Although Hornacek was not at fault, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang were siphoning energy from the team.  Once we traded them for Barkley, that urgency arrived once he stepped on the court.  Hopefully Shaq will have the same affect.

Let's kid us not, ok?
I love DJ, but he SUCKED last night. 1-8 doesn't translate how bad he was on the offense. In all those misses he was ALONE, nobody guarding him close. He airballed one of the ugliest thing I ever saw in my life...

After one of these, Shaq kind of grabbed him. It seemed like he was trying to cheer up the rookie. BTW, the TV kept showing Shaq on the bench, and he seemed like a very nice guy to be around. Everyone around was laughing, and this is VERY big. Even coach D was laughing at some point. You would never get this out of Shawn, who could be a big asshole sometimes...

And what about Grant Hill? Everyone said he was done too...

DJ & Shaq
Shaq is definitely going to be a great mood-lifter for this team.  We actually looked excited at times last night (too excited, which led to sloppy play, especially in the 1st).

And as far as DJ goes, the kid's not a shooter... yet.  He's just starting to get minutes, which is going to make him nervous.  But although his offense wasn't great, his hustle and defense were pretty damned good for a rookie that's only averaging 9 minutes in 18 games.

He's only going to get better.  His basketball IQ is great, and his shooting problems can be corrected.
