What better way for the Suns to put that "ugh"-fest that was Sunday's Detroit beat-down behind them than a game against...
...wait for it....
Kwame Brown! He of the dunk-missing, ball-dropping, pass-botching, cake-throwing baby hands.
The new-look Suns face the new-look Grizzlies tonight for the first time this season. The Suns are no doubt thrilled to be facing Kwame instead of Pau Gasol, who picked them apart in last week's game against the Lakers. The Grizzlies were already on the wrong end of the standings even before their give-away of the Suns' new nemesis to the Lakers, so it's hard to imagine this won't be a repeat of Sunday with the Suns administrating the beating this time. Besides, it's the Grizzlies' fault (or more to the point, their front office's fault) that the Suns are looking up at the Lakers in the standings. Time to exact some revenge!
Still, lest Karma come looking for me after the above paragraph, here's a bit from the other side: The Grizzlies have beaten San Antonio once this season. Minnesota too. Of course, that was before they sent Pau off to his dream job. Seriously, no excuses for the Suns not to win this one. Zero, zilch, nada. The guys at 3 Shades of Blue would seem to agree.
Live blogging is on. Check the comments of this post after tipoff.
[Update 16:25 MT]: The latest on Brent Barry: Still undecided (or just making it look that way?).

Looks like a draft of an article that isn't finished yet, but sure sounds like the Suns missed out on Barry. (Not surprised, really, if that turns out to be the case, but did expect he'd wait out SA, not sign somewhere else. Who's even left from that list?).

Do you guys want this guy to come?
I have mixed feeling about this deal... What do you guys think?

No lose
I don't think like a bunch of people that we need another shooter. I am listening to the local radio talking about how Raja and LB aren't shooting as well as they used to but the reason is they aren't getting wide open looks anymore.
I guess the idea is that you put him on the floor w/ Shaq and IF Shaq is doubled you can have Barry open for a 3. That of course is based on Shaq being able to score in the post (hasn't yet) and demanding the double.
Anyway, I think Barry is fine but I don't think he's a difference maker.
Sam Cassell on the other hand I think is a big addition to play 10-15 minutes when Nash is out and if LB is not on you can even play him with Nash at times. I don't think they will get Cassell though b/c he costs too much.

And House
I deffinately think Banks was an upgrade in talent level but for a lot of reasons (character?) he didn't work out here.
But pound for pound Banks is a far better player then House and if Eddie were here we would be all over him for his one dimensional game.

I don't think so

You may not like the moves, but...
- The Shaq trade hasn't played out yet.
- Who would've kept Jones shooting 33%?
- $16 million is a lot of money to pay for a one-dimensional 35 year old big man.
- After the way Diaw played in 06, anyone would have given him that contract.
- Eddie House disappeared toward the end of the season, and appeared spent.

good points
I don't miss Jones,
Marion and the heat have still yet to win!
I agree on Diaw, and he has shown some great moments here and there recently, and having marion gone opens up his time, hopefully like when amare was gone
House...yep

Hm...
Also, James Jones is tied for the league lead in 3 point accuracy. I think his shooting troubles started that year with the new ball, and have obviously returned to form...

Game on
OK, moment over.
Memphis is first to the board, but only once. Suns offense picking up where it left off on Sunday so far, which is not good news. Fortunately, the Grizzlies aren't doing much better and only lead by 2.

Q1 And we have our first D'oh! moment
Here's my first prediction for the Shaq era: CP3 will pass Nash for the assist lead this season. JKidd might too. And will might be a good thing--it means other Suns (e.g., Shaq) are setting up the offense instead of it all relying on one guy.

After one
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies are shooting 40% (good) but have 6 more attempts (bad). Four turnovers plus allowing three offensive rebounds would be the reason for that.
Here's another interesting stat: Mike Conley has six assists. That's more than the entire Suns team. We have five. So my earlier statement that it's good for Nash to lag in assists only holds if other players on the team ARE actually making the plays.

OK, Shaq may make the Suns "better" (still up for debate), but one thing I think we can say right now is he does NOT make them more fun to watch.
Meanwhile, Nash+Amare for the third time makes it 50-42.

The Suns are now up 59-45. In other words, the score is looking a lot more Suns-like now, and Nash finally has as many assists as Conley (6).

not way to end a half
by Hawk42 on Feb 26, 2008 7:16 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
At the half
- Suns broke 60 points for a half while holding their opponent to less than that.
- Suns shot 55% and held Grizzlies to 43%.
- Suns "only" got out-rebounded by three.
- Six turnovers, about the average for the season.
- 15 fouls by the Grizzlies and Shaq has gone an amazing 4-6 from the line.
- Steve Nash is halfway to his assist average (for the first time in the Shaq era).
- 2-of-10 from three. Raja and LB are the main culprits (0-3 for Raja, 1-4 for LB).
- Grizzlies are 5-17 from three (42%).
- Most of the turnovers have come off steals, and hence increasing the odds of a score by the Grizzlies. 11 more shot attempts for the Grizzlies than the Suns.

And that's the game...
Amare with the post-game interview. Nothing particularly interesting there, just the standard "we picked up the defense in the fourth quarter", etc, and yet another mention of how nice it is to play at his natural position.
I'm going to delay posting the recap a bit. I want to go back and rewatch some of this first, because it's kind of hard to keep up with the visuals when you're typing comments at the same time. I'll put it up later tonight.
In the meantime, thanks everyone who followed along and chimed in. We'll do it again tomorrow.
