Next Steps

At the risk of spoiling fun while the roller coaster is riding high after the glorious victory over the hated Spurs - let's look forward.

As nice as that win was - and it was GLORIOUS - we are going to need to see more of the same for it to matter. I thought the progress had been steady and I have no reason to think it won't continue. But it has to continue.

  • If you think about the mid-season pre-season rebuild project plan (and I love me some good project plan) then I would envision this:

    1. Figure out the new offense with more bodies in the lane and different spacing. I would say this is about 85% done. Turnovers are headed down. FG% is stable. Scoring is good. Balance is good. Using Shaq well early in the post. I look for his offensive game to continue to improve as he gets more fit. Team 3P average is down a bit but should be fine. And Amare is awesome. Steve seems to be getting better from whatever was ailing him as well and he's still MVP clutch.

    2. Re-tool defense with new big body in the lane and lack of Marion to cover for others and be there put an "X" on the other team's stud. I would say this is about 50% there. Progress has been made for sure, but there's a lot left to do to get this team on the same page on defense so they don't have to play 110% for 48 minutes every game to stop someone. That's not sustainable. The system has to accomplish about half the result and effort and talent the other half. Right now I think its still about 80% effort and talent and 20% system. Especially if they aren't going to play more guys.

    3. Rotations and bench play. Right before the trade this was Coach's focus. He was talking about getting the bench better and demanding more. This was a great mid-season fine tuning improvement project. Now, its at the bottom of the priority list and is about 10% complete. Maybe even a "Not Started Yet". I hope there's time to address this before playoff's but for now I don't see how Coach can deepen his bench when he's still trying to get his top 7 guys on the same page.
  • Next two weeks the schedule is a bit easier then its been. Over the next 6 games we need to win at least 4. 5 is doable. All 6 would be awesome and completely possible. But if we drop an "easy" one and/or play without effort and purpose then I might be right back to being Clipper Fan. Early in the season I had no issues with losing a game like this from time to time. I didn't panic after the Nuggets or Jazz loses. But there's a limit to how far down this roller coaster can go before I start screaming. The team's PR and media machine are all over the fans for panicing but the team has to do its part and not play like crap at this point in the season. Loses are ok during the re-build. Lack of effort is inexcusable from here on in. This is an accountability moment.

Totally agree
There is no time now for Coach D to really develope the bench. He's gonna have to do it in his traditional way of playing a short rotation or I don't think they'll ever 'click' together - especially on defense.

I'm really looking forward to the Thursday game against Golden State. They've always played us realy tough and I'm curious to see what happens with our new look.

It's all connected
"Using Shaq well early in the post. I look for his offensive game to continue to improve as he gets more fit. Team 3P average is down a bit but should be fine" These two things go hand in hand. As Shaq continues to improve he will demand more attention from the defense, opening everything up and getting our 3 point shooters more open looks. Once we start running on all cylinders, we could be a machine that's tough to stop. I think we've all seen flashes of it, let's hope it becomes a consistent occurrence.

3P Shooting
From I can tell, we are getting plenty of open looks but just not making them. Clearly, that was the case on Sunday.

We know Bell and LB can be streaky and hopefully GG will remember that he was brought here to hit open shots too.

I am not worried about this frankly. This team no longer needs to shoot 40% from 3 and hit 9+ to win games. That's gravy.

I wouldn't get too happy
It was a nice win but the Spurs had a ton of open shots and missed them. They shot a dismal 35 percent. Their 7 threes kept them in the game. Shaq definitely helped on Duncan (6-19) but look at some of their other guys: Bowen (1-5), Finley (0-6), Ginobili (7-19), Horry and Stoudamire (0-4 combined). You can't tell me this was due to PHX defense.

And the Spurs
D didn't cause the Suns to shoot 3 of 14 from behind the line. Those shots were just plain misses. "Ton of open shots and missed them"

Besides, have you looked at the averages for Bowen and Finely lately? The good folks at a Pounding the Rock have and they aren't exactly pleased.

Besides, Shaq in the middle caused a lot of those misses and allowed the other Suns defenders to stay home more on the outside shooters. The missed open shots were late in the game after being hammered all day. Those misses happen as a result of everything that happened before.

Or maybe they were just bad luck for the Spurs. Bad luck that they were outscored 14-2 to end the game. Just like it was bad luck that the Suns gave up 41 on Friday against the Jazz.

Oh, and btw - how did that Lakers/Kings game turn out? Just asking.

you're right
the Suns shot poorly as well mostly from three. I don't think giving up 41 to Utah is bad luck just like I don't think losing by 40 to Detroit is bad luck. both the Suns and the Spurs didn't shoot well but it wasn't because of some lockdown D. the Suns didn't suddenly become a great defensive team overnight. as for the Lakers game I felt like I was watching the Suns in the first half, yielding 71 points. I can't say I'm happy they lost but they certainly deserved to. They've been winning too many of these type of games recently. The last time they played really well offensively (I don't count the Clips game) was against Portland and they lost that one too because they felt like they can just outscore everyone. wonder where they got that idea.

For the record
Its all about matchups right...

Manu averages FG 46% this year and last. Against Phx he is 31% and 39%. Bad luck or Raja Bell?

And yes, of course the Suns didn't become a lockdown defensive team overnight and that's a point I have been making as well. The Spurs aren't close to a great offensive team and they can make you look good on D. But their game isn't to outscore you. Their game is just lock you down and score enough. Well, against Phx that didn't work b/c we are better offensive team and good enough defensively. That's Los Suns approach.

The Suns don't need to be great on D. Just good. Not horrible.

On Bench
Despite the need to adjust this team to Shaq (as well as Shaq's need to adjust to the Suns), a strong bench still needs to be developed. Shaq's effectiveness come playoff time will be nulled out if
 a) he gets into foul trouble
 b) health deteriorates
 c) gets worn out or other mentioned senarios because of a lack of relief in his position

I really want to see Skinner back. If Shaq can play with Amare, then why can't Skinner? I never thought I would say this about the Principal, but he's agile and can run the floor, at least in comparison to Shaq.
Another benchman that needs to get more time is DJ Strawberry. With Bell being iffy and with injury, he too needs relief, and badly. These two men would bring the rotation to 10, and they're not too shabby on scoring.
I understand Coach D's lack of confidence in the bench in the past, but he now has capable people who NEED to get in the flow of things come playoff time.

No way

We don't want to burn Skinner up in games!

We need him well-rested to take Shaq's unmerciful pounding in practice.

Agree with srp on all points
Tonite is a good test with a cellar dwellar at home after that gut-check game.  Los Suns intensity is mostly what won that game Sunday--effort and desire is what has a defender moving his feet and getting the stop, as opposed to waving his arms and giving away the and-1, and that's what we saw.  They need to keep that will to dominate against the lesser teams coming up.

No doubt that 4 of the next 6 is the minimum standard, and all 6 are well within reason and should be the goal.  Looking a little farther ahead, I'd really enjoy seeing Detroit get served a nice cold plate'o revenge as well, but I'd settle for a competitive showing there.

Detroit
I can't wait to see the Suns beat them too. Its the only chance all year I get to see my beloved team in person.

I want to hear
Pheeeeenix basketbaaaall come through my TV!

I was amazed how many Pistons fans showed up to USAC a few weeks ago. And they were loud. And it sucked. Give it right back at 'em!
