Shaq Clears the Bench, Suns Clear the Grizzlies (132-111)

I could probably forgo the recap altogether tonight and just post this YouTube by srp. It pretty much says it all if you let Shaq represent the Suns, and the Suns bench represent the Grizzlies:

That's kind of how this game went. The Suns came charging through the gate, and the Grizzlies for the most part just got the heck out of the way! This was that four quarters of beat-down I wrongly predicted the last time the Suns played the Grizzlies. We even got to see Kwame this time! So, I guess I was a few games early with the prediction, but whatever. It's just great to see the Suns looking like they're having fun again, and more importantly, looking like contenders again.

That's right, I said it!

I don't care if it came against the Grizzlies who looked every bit like the already-eliminated from the playoffs team that they are. When you score as many points in the first quarter (41) as your opponent scores in an entire half, that's pretty darn impressive. When you out-assist, out-rebound, out-shoot, out-block, and outplay your opponent in just about every way possible, that's impressive too. So, while I'm not sitting down to that Shaq-sized plate of crow just yet, if the Suns continue to play like they did tonight and Sunday, I'll have to start looking for a chef real soon.

A few random thoughts:

  • It's pretty fitting on a day that started with me grudgingly putting up a post honoring my least favorite player in the league, that it would be a guy I haven't exactly welcomed with open arms who really set the tone tonight. Shaq wrapped up Player of the Game honors by the time he took the bench in the first quarter. The Suns ran the offense through him from the get-go, and he had four assists right away. He basically filled the role Nash usually does in getting everybody involved early.
  • Nash deserves some kudos too for recognizing that it was Shaq's night to shine and letting the big guy run things when the two of them were on the floor. I still think both of them together makes for too many chiefs sometimes, but there were also long periods where one was on the floor while the other rested, and that kept the offense humming the whole way through. Oh, and despite it appearing that Nash was making a concerted effort to let other guys make plays, he still ended up leading everyone in assists, notching eight in just 25 minutes.
  • I barely noticed Amare's 29 points and 13 boards. He also had four assists of his own. That's not a knock. It just means that he blended in pretty well with the flow of the game as he quietly led both teams in scoring and rebounds.
  • How badly do Grizzly fans hate Raja Bell right now? After torching the Griz in the fourth quarter last time, Bell had a string of three straight threes in the third quarter of this game, plus another three points the old-fashioned way. He ended up with 20 points total, all but two coming in the third quarter.
  • Gordan Giricek finally found his shot from everywhere but behind the arc (and he only attempted one of those). He went 9-of-14 for 18 points.
Player of the Game: Shaquille O'Neal. Yep, two points on a single shot gets the POG when you also have six assists, eight rebounds, three blocks, and you dominated the game from the opening tip.

Runner-Up: I'm going with the game's plus/minus leader Grant Hill, who I purposefully left out of the bullet items above so I could mention him here. He went 7-of-10 from the field, and ended up with a Marion-lite line of 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and a block. Then, there was that whole plus/minus thing (+25).

Did You Know?: A few drops of knowledge from the Suns broadcast tonight regarding Al McCoy's "Shazam!" and where it came from. They said he got it from the comic book character Captain Marvel, a radio reporter in his "day job" who used "Shazam!" to summon his powers. Shazam stands for: (S)oloman (wisdom), (H)ercules (strength), (A)tlas (stamina), (Z)eus (power), (A)chilles (courage), (M)ercury (speed). Wikipedia has way more than you'd ever want to know about Al McCoy's superhero muse.

Update [2008-3-12 10:19:51 by srp]:

If Los Suns beat the Grizz its kind of meaningless...

If Los Suns lose to the Grizz its a disaster...

But when Los Suns blowout the Grizz and use defense to ignite the run and tear out the bear's heart then that's a great thing...

This win provides momentum and returns the fun to the team and gives a big confidence boost....There could not have been a better outcome for Los Suns and their fanaticos.

Don't get me wrong. Its still the Grizz and they pretty much rolled over. And can Mark Ivaroni explain why he kept going to Darko in the post against Shaq? Was he trying to embarass the big Slav into retirement so he could save cap space? Was he trying to help his old team by providing a big practice player for the Diesel to abuse?

Now lets see it continue. Especially Thursday against the Warriors b/c I will be at that game and the last game I went to was Detroit. I deserve a great game! DO IT FOR ME!

BTW: I am not dropping "Los" until they Lose

The Shaq Attack

The national media should run the bench clearing when Shaq ran toward them.  It was the funniest scene I have ever seen in a basketball game.

bad 3-point shooting
Not to nitpick...but I still don't understand why we are shooting so poorly in 3's...

nitpicking
If we win games by 21, I don't mind if we don't hit any threes.  It's not as if our ability to hit them is gone.

GSW
Time for a great game against the Warriors.  I think we can do it, but we have to set the tempo.  I want to see what they do against Shaq.  If they put Webber on him, the big guy is gonna light him up.

You guys have to force feed
the post against GS and should not try to run with them.
In the first game the Blazers played against them, they could not stop Przybilla, so they have no chance against Amare and Shaq.

i hope so
because we're 0 - 2 against them so far, but last game was close. After the way g.s. played and beat the mavs last yr, I'm always cautious about saying we'll beat them. They're a very good team and can create steals/turnovers as well or better than any team out there. That's the beauty of running things through shaq, it's very rare someone is going to force a turnover from him, they'd have to buy a ladder, plus he holds onto the ball really well, should be a fun game. I'm just hoping for the same intensity from the suns and I'll be happy. I hate Memphis for trading gasol to the lakers,

Oh the irony
I have been thinking alot about this.

Just the pure irony of suddendly having our game plan be pretty much the Pistons. Boards. No turnovers. Slow the game. Execution. Run when you can.

The battle of wills and nerve is the funnest part of this entire thing. Back in the day (a few months ago) the Suns would try and force teams to go small by abusing the bigs on offense. Now, we are trying to do the exact opposite to the Warriors. Make them play our new game.

We need to trap the ball on our missses and makes so they can't run right away and Shaq has time to get back. In the half court on D we might as well expect a disaster. They don't play anyone near the post except for whomever Steve is guarding. Shaq will either be at the 3 point line of leaving a shooter wide open. We MUST dominate the glass an on offense pound them w/ Amare (not Shaq) down low.

I actually think the Suns with just Amare can beat this team and Shaq might play a lesser role.

Amare can dominate the post against them and run. We just need to NOT TURN THE BALL OVER like we did last time. You cannot give this team extra open looks.

We might also see more GG to play D on their wing players and I would hope DJ to try and contain Ellis. Ellis is our worst matchup and unlike the Spurs, they will pull Shaq away from the hoop to get him an open lane.

And finally, we do need to abuse them physically. Shaq should be prepared to play less minutes - about 20 - but use all of his fouls. And use them well. Get his money's worth.

This game is just a classic chess match with an old sly drunk of a coach on one side and stuborn Mike on the other. I can't wait.

Not a bad comparison
The Pistons have done well with their approach.  The difference is in their defense.  If we play defense like the Pistons, we will win the championship.  Our offense is better.

Don't kid yourself.  The 2 games in Oakland featured a Suns team trying to run and a young Warriors team feeding off the crowd and overwhelming the Suns' defense.  In Phoenix it will be different.

And then there's Shaq.

Running is hard when the shot isn't falling
They ran, Bruno.  Oh, did they run.  GS can't shoot 60% every time.  We played stiff defense.  I really think the bad streak of 4 or so games with teams shooting great was partly bad luck, the shots were just falling.  How do we go from giving up 55% for five games, then 39% for the last three?

Nellie will have them prepped
The Suns weakness against the Warriors is very similar to the Mavs:  Nellie knows Nash's weaknesses   and how to exploit them perhaps better than any coach in the league, and the W's have the personnel to do it.  They will make Nash work on D by going to Boom-dizzle, and try to run Shaq off the court just as the Suns did to him in Miami the last few years.  The Suns must counter by relying on their new-found dominance on the boards, staying home on the deep shooters, getting back on D in transition, and not turning it over.

What the heck is boom-dizzle?
I may be showing my age but I've never seen the 'coolness' or cleverness in nicknames like 'boom-dizzle'  Has Snoop Dogg taken over the Queen's English?

Aw, come on
Boom-Dizzle is one of my favorite nicknames in the league.  I also like his other nickname, "B-Diddy"

Reminds
me of one of those old video games, NBA Jam I think, where if you did an amazing dunk, the announcer would say "Razzle-Dazzle!" or something.  so I get the picture of him dunking and the announcer yelling  "Boom-Dizzle!" which sounds similar but is also related to his name.

Not Old man, just detest what music has become
The way I look at it, I've had more years of fun on this planet than most, and I plan to have many more.  I don't feel old.  And I'm not clueless like many of the twentysomethings I meet these days...

re: Nicknames
What is weak as hell and a sad state of affairs is that most of the new nicknames start and end with the first initial-last name first syllable combos like J-Will, K-Mart, T-Mac, and the like.

I'm not sure I "get" Boom-Dizzle, but I would argue it's the modern equivalent of Chocolate Thunder, and that's not a bad thing.  We lost one of the great nicknames in the league when we shipped out the Matrix, but of course we got it all back and then some with the Daddy, the Diesel, the Big Bench-Clearer...
