Game Day Thread: Suns v. Kings

Phoenix Suns
vs.

Sacramento Kings
43-22 29-35
7:00 PM Pacific / 10:00 PM Eastern
TV: FSNAZ, NBALP
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Beno Udrih
Raja Bell SG Kevin Martin
Grant Hill??? SF Ron Artest
Amare Stoudemire PF Mikki Moore
Shaquille O'Neal C Brad Miller

Los Suns play the Kings tonight coming off the big wins against the Spurs and Warriors with the thumping of the Grizz thrown in there.

This is certainly a game that Los Suns has to and should win but I don't think they're going to roll over as easily as a Memphis team searching for a high lotto pick.

The Kings wing players Salmons, Garcia and Ron-Ron are tough match-ups but we've got a huge edge w/ Amare and Shaq down low. Let's break down the numbers:

Early Defensive Intensity + NO LET DOWN = Win Tonight

And because you just can't get enough of the blatently obvious:

Score more point then the Kings = Win Tonight

Who am I kidding:

Suns vs Kings = Win Tonight

And for your Grant Hill wrist update courtesy of Mr. Coro:

Grant Hill's right wrist was still sore more than 12 hours after Golden State guard Monta Ellis undercut the Suns forward, who dropped to the floor.
Friday's light practice consisted mostly of shooting, but Hill didn't participate. His status for Saturday's game was unclear.
"We'll see how it goes," D'Antoni said.

I am thinking that GG on Ron Ron might just be a better match up. Gordon is bigger and stronger and more physical then Grant and for whatever reason the Jazz have gotten under Crazy Pill's skin. Maybe Gordon can bring some of that and send Artest off the deep end into a fenzy of ill advised long range jumpers.

This is deffinately one game where I would not want to be sitting in the first few rows.

Other players to watch: Diaw has played well of late. Count on him to be a non-factor tonight. He's due.

And finally, this guy seems to light it up against the Kings. He's due as well:

Sactown Royalty is one of the better team blogs out there. They've got the flip side view of this one.

Agreed. I think Los Suns are still hungry

Sactos had some recent success against the Flakers and Blazers.

Salmons shouldn't be much of a threat as he just hasn't had the PT to perform.

Radman

Radman is the worst pickup ever for the lakers.

Bad enough he sabotaged himself last year or the year before from skiing during the season.

Bad enough that he's overpaid chucker that's soft on  D.

Now he takes out the best trade of the decade!

Oh, just great
Now every single Laker win will be accompanied by a dozen stories about Kobe carrying the team through adversity, keeping his head up, and being the MVP.  I hope they  go 0-whatever until Gasol's back and CP3 wins the MVP.

Suns/Kings
Early defensive intensity is definitely required yes. On top of that, the NO let down, playing a full 48 minutes is something that the Suns more or less have been able to do their last 3 games. There was a time midway through the 4th quarter in the Warriors game that they almost lapsed, but I credit Mike D'Antoni forleaving both Amare and Shaq on the floor with 5 fouls each to keep playing and man the middle. It worked on defense, and should work tonight vs Sac.

Good to see Raja Bell running and getting confident with that 3-ball - it's almost like he has half-heartedly thrown them up recently, but in the Golden State game, he was letting them go with confidence!

Looks like this one can get settle on the court tonight.  I like Shaq's odds.  I'm not sure the statline will convey his impact.

We'll see.

End of the first Q - Suns up 37 -34
as the quarter closes with an Artest and Garcia three bookending a three by Gordon G.

Suns need to step up the D a little bit and put the clamps on this team. They have several perimeter weapons and the boys need to stay a little tighter and make them put the ball on the floor.

Q2 8:43 Suns 46 - 40
After the Kings close it to one the Suns get two stops and a couple of buckets and push it back out to six.

Gordon G is playing well off the bench. I take back all those bad things I said about him.

I like this guys game. He is not only shooting the 3 but is a much better scorer then Raja and plays solid D.

You could almost see him starting over Raja at some point.

The Suns let the Kings get close early in the quarter with the score 41-40 and then proceeded to score 39 points and hold the Queens to only 8 more!

seriously
this kings team isn't a pushover, as you said, they beat L.A. last week in L.A! I don't know what I'm most impressed with, the suns offense or their new man to man hustle, double to close off lanes to hoop  defense

by jasonsuns1 on Mar 15, 2008 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

up by 30 at half,
and there's little question, 2 things happened

one, the suns offense is really clicking in many ways, great to see skinner get in there and get a few quick hoops, I miss him, but the suns have been playing solid D. 4 games in a row now where we play good to great D. I don't think I've seen Nash do this well in applying pressure, the switches, the closing off the drive, Hill rotating, wow, simply wow! PS, biggest game of the year tomorrow in my view (aside from all suns games), Lakers vs Houston,
Houston with 21 in a row, tied with L.A...any thoughts anyone?

about that game, no doubt.  McGrady can kick off his MVP campaign with a win over Kobe tomorrow.

by RealTangiblesGuy on Mar 15, 2008 9:18 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Houston's going to get waxed
even w/o Pau those Rockets just can't score enough points to keep up w/ the Kobe's.

They barely beat Atl the other day and are in for a reality check.

In two weeks though could be 6 or 7 seed and I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't make the playoff's.

shaq is shooting softer free throws
and moving a little quicker, it's frightening to think he could be much better in 2-4 weeks. Amare is
amazing, neither Kobe nor Lebron has the ability that Amare is picking up to avoid the offensive foul while driving to the hoop. I still see Lebron drop a shoulder sometimes, Amare just takes off, wow! I loved the shot while on the other side of the backboard!!

a start of those red-hot Suns streak
This is GREAT!  I have somehow predicted this after we beat the Warriors.  We are going to get on a crazy streak and finish at the top of the West to start the playoff.  Meanwhile, the Lakers and the Spurs are starting to tumble down with injuries (Gasol) and just plain-old suckiness (the Spurs lost to Philly tonight!  That's their 3rd straight loss, right?).

I haven't seen that until just recently and we've seen it a few times tonight.

Amare getting the ball away from the basket is just deadly.

The Suns are going to HAVE to pick up a backup Center for next year so they can keep Amare at the 4 while Shaq takes the first half of the season off.

As I am typing that Amare blocks Artest on a 1:1 break away and then comes back and get the three point play.

Nash gave Amare that foul
tough play - Nash fed Amare the ball on the roll and he had no chance to do anything except catch and slam into Miller.

The ref's are real inconsistent with that call though. The other night against the Warriors that would have been a blocking foul.

are doing a much better job of just trying to tip the ball in the right direction, then rebound it, instead of going for full rebound and missing it, I've seen this a few times tonight by Diaw, Hill, others, really great, I know it's simple, but I'm not used to seeing it from the Suns

Skinner back in
as the games gets a bit sloppy and the lead "down" to 24.

one thing kings fans can feel good about
artest is awesome, to be such a good shooter, and such a strong defender, etc, wow

Where's Strawberry?
C'mon D'Antoni, lets give the kid some burn.

by dvg on Mar 15, 2008 9:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

strawberry
is just like skinner, a player who on most teams sould be getting 20+ minutes a game, he really is doing well in limited minutes with the Suns. I hope those minutes increase before we give him away.

by jasonsuns1 on Mar 15, 2008 9:58 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with ya.
Hopefully, he'll focus on his jump shot over the summer.  If he can consistently hit from the corner he could get some quality minutes.

Got to hand it to the Kings
they are playing hard. Suns need to give another solid 6 min or so...

I don't see it
Artest is the only one really playing.  If they would follow his lead, we would have a fight on our hands.

Can I just share
I just used one of the greatest inventions ever. My Reef flip flops have a bottle opener on the bottom of the sole.

That allows me to have my son bring me a beer in bed and open it w/ my shoe. Genius.

Blam!
Amare looked like he was ging to fall out of bounds, next thing you know, he is on the other side of the basket with a slam.  This is a highlight reel game.

And then LB goes down on a fast break.  I was yelling pass it, pass it! but then he made the shot and-1

Conversation between Shaq and Bell on bench
Bell:  He got you under the belt!
Shaq:  OOf! yeah, I'll get over it.
Bell:  When I got it , it was Ginobli who grabbed me.
haq:  Oh Man, that's just not right!

Hawk update
This morning I was at the local parks and rec tennis center for a match - I got SMOKED - and I not only saw the AZ Governor playing (she really shouldn't wear shorts in public) but I ran into a guy I know that played with Connie Hawkins. I asked about him and found out that he has Colon cancer. I hadn't seen heard that anywhere.

He hasn't played tennis in ages obviously but he's been seen out in public a few times and I guess is doing ok.

I don't want to jinx anything here...
But I keep having crazy images in my mind of the Suns running the table, blowing everyone out, etc. etc.  This game was just too awesome.

A little too soon
for parade planning....

The Kings are a bad team and the Suns blew them out earlier this year as well.

They certainly look good but let's not get to far ahead of ourselves here.

There's a lot of basketball left and some very good teams left to beat.
