Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns at Boston Celtics

Phoenix Suns
at

Boston Celtics
47-23 55-15
4:00 PM Pacific / 7:00 PM Eastern
TV: My45 HD, ESPN
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Rajon Rondo
Raja Bell SG Ray Allen
Grant Hill SF Paul Pierce
Amare Stoudemire PF Kevin Garnett
Shaquille O'Neal C Kendrick Perkins

What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said and said again? How about: If the Suns can play as well as they did last time against the Celtics in their second game after the Shaq trade, then this game is already in the bag, right? Well, not so fast. The Celtics weren't at their best either that night, in the midst of a grueling road trip with Kevin Garnett freshly back in the lineup following an injury. And the Suns really had a very special night defensively, or else the Celtics had a very "special" night of the dubious kind offensively. It was probably a bit of both. I expect this game to be much more of a close-matched slug-fest.

Live blogging begins at tip-off in the comments of this post. Green Bandwagon and CelticsBlog have the view from the other side.

There is hope ...
Coach D is, once again, publicly taking Doris to task (a recent Coro article notes this).

I'd hope this means more of The Principal, but as long as it means less Doris, I'm good with that.

Mmmmm ... Guinness

Finally!
I can just picture that loose ball rolling down the court (vs. Detroit?) that he made absolutely no attempt to track down and he was the closest Sun to the ball. Aaaaarrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh!

Shaq to Reject Crime
http://youbeenblinded.com/shaquille-oneal-volunteers-for-tempe-police/

He did this in LA and Miami.

Also, I vote to replace Doris with Boris Meow.

Optimist here
This game is all about winning your individual matchups.  Keys:

Amare and KG will renew their war.  Amare needs to limit the fouls, because we need 40 minutes out of him.

Raja vs Ray Allen - Raja must limit Ray to bad shooting like before, and hit  some shaots himself

Grant Hill must have a good game, and keep Pierce from getting in the lane.

Shaq is our advantage.  He needs to dominate Perkins and whoever they throw at him.

Steve Nash needs to have his normal game, and at least keep in front of Rondo.  And don't let the Alien get off on us.

Our $45 million X factor, as usual, is Boris.  If we get a good game out of him, we win.  If we get 2 shots and 4 turnovers in 9 minutes we are in danger.

That's all.  Oh no, I forgot.  We have Barbosa.  If Leo gets hot, we can blow them out.  Spread the floor and have them chase our 3 popint shooters.  On defense, we need the perimeter guys to send the action to Shaq.

In short, we play our game, we win.

'07-'08 Suns: It's clobberin' time!

The Alien...
I had completely forgotten about that guy...He plays well against us...

I'm going to steal a line from Doug Collins: Barbosa is the wild card here, if he plays well, we have a shot and we can afford having an off night from one of our starters.

Hope Raja can stay con Allen, Billups made him looked bad in that OT.

by PanamaSun on Mar 26, 2008 12:38 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Allen v. Billups
Raja can do okay, mainly because Ray doesn't have the ability to drive well anymore.  Billups still has that and exposed Bell (I'm going to say it was the injury).  Bell just has to remember to stay home on Allen and not double-team b/c Allen has always toasted the Suns when they played their doubling, scrambling defense.

You are right J
But remember that Kid who burned Raja from the 3 point Line? Navarro was his name??? Don't recall.

I thought aswell that it was the ankle...but then I read that he felt good, almost at a 100%, Which, I have to say, it was way more disturbing...

Anybody knows if Bill Walton is on tonight???
I'll have the MUTE button ready for him!

You in Brasil??

Where?  My gf is doing field work in Sao Paulo, but is in Brasilia this month.

I just got back from Salvador and Rio last month.  Loved it.  Salvador especially.

I'm brazilian actually
I lived in the States for about 15 years, most of it living in Boston.

I am on Santa Catarina. It's ok, but it isn't Rio. Salvador and Rio are by far the best places in Brazil.

Raja on Billups
It was the foul trouble that let Billups penetrate, if you remember Billups never really got into a rhythm until the fourth quarter from which Raja played with 4 and 5 fouls.  And anyway, Allen is a hell of a lot less able to muscle his way past Raja than Billups is.  GOD I HATE THE GODDAMN PISTONS!!!!!!

by MichiganSunsFan on Mar 26, 2008 4:38 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Well,
Maybe if Raja had done a better job on Billups in the 4th quarter it never would have gone to OT is my way of looking at it.  Just because you have 4 or 5 fouls doesn't mean you should just let your man blow by you.

Live blogging running late
I didn't time my dinner-cooking right, so I'm going to be a bit late to the live blogging. Hoping to pick it up in the second quarter if not sooner. Sorry, all.

Q1 7:41 - Above comment...
...has inspired me to attempt blogging, eating and watching the game all at the same time. This could get ugly.

...BTW, this IS a national broadcast, right? Just wondering, because the announcers seem pretty pro-Boston in the early going.

Anyway, back to ball, Boston is up five in a running game with the Suns. Amare's long jumper looks to have not made the trip (at least he missed the only two I saw him shoot, one contested, one not so much). Now he gets called for a travel. Not bagging on Amare, just pointing out that it looks like he's having a little tougher time this game than in the previous meeting with Boston.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:19 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 7:06 - And as I was typing...
...mean stuff about Amare, he gets a dunk on Perkins.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:20 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 6:12 - D'oh!
Little mis-connect on the pass leads to a turnover. Might have been an uncalled holding foul involved, but it still leads to a bucket and a nine-point lead for the Celtics.

...which Shaq gets back with a dunk of his own.

Thanks

By the way...orange on that bostonian hardwood seems kind of weird.

by lobsang on Mar 26, 2008 5:23 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 5:33 - That could have been ugly
Rondo somehow slips and falls backwards right on Nash's head.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:24 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 4:51 - Well, that stinks.
Raja makes a three but it doesn't count because he stepped out of bounds (?).

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:29 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 4:07 - Redemption for Diaw
A few more of those made jumpers would do nicely.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:30 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q1 3:25 - That was just a case...
...of wanting it more. Amare works his way to a bucket.

...but the Celtics make a want it more move of their own with the score off the offensive rebound. 23-16, Celtics, for those who wish I'd remember to update the score. :)

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:31 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Perkins
is he a chris wilcox type that's going to have a 20-20 night against us ?

Q1 2:30 - Double-digits...
...and not in a good way. Celtics up by 10 after the "1" part of the and-1.

Q1 2:00 - Flat, flat, flat
Nothing falling for the Suns right now. "Clank!" becoming a familiar theme, as LB misses the long jumper. Suns are digging themselves a hole, now down by 12.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:38 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Make that 14.
Can't count...anyway, NOW it's 12 after Shaq makes the shot and misses the free throw.

Q1 00:57 - Really nice hustle by the Celtics
Gotta give props where they're due. Leon Powe scrambles on the floor fighting for the ball and ends up with a trip to the free throw line.

Celtics lead 31-18 after he splits the pair.

by Nobs on Mar 26, 2008 5:43 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow
The C's are just amazing on D. You can definitely see how much trouble the Suns have getting good looks against them. You see how the Suns rotate the ball into the corner for what is usually a wide open three, but against this team the rotation is already there!

by TheyCallMePhil on Mar 26, 2008 5:45 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

After one
The first quarter ends with one of those "where was that earlier?" plays by LB, Diaw, and Shaq to close the gap to 13. But if the Suns don't pick up the energy level a little, this is not going to end well.

Suns are shooting 45% to the Celtics' 54%, and they've allowed the Celtics six offensive rebounds leading to four extra shot attempts to boot. Basically, the Suns are getting outplayed in just about every statistical category so far. Mike D'Antoni nails it in his speech - bad offense and bad defense are indeed a bad combination, and the Suns do need to be more aggressive.

Q2 - 11:08 Like watching paint dry
Even the Boston crowd sounds quiet. Even with their team up by 11.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:48 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 10:29 - More of that ..
Diaw with the steal...

...but not more of that - LB dribbling himself into a turnover.

Fortunately, the Celtics mess up too, and Diaw ends up closing it to nine. 33-24.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:49 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

wow...we are ONLY down by 7
Given how poorly we are playing, this is a miracle.

by sonicking on Mar 26, 2008 5:51 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 9:23 - Just as the announcers...
...were starting with the comments about how bad the Suns look without Nash, Shaq makes a Nash-like pass to Diaw for the easy one to close it to seven and force a Celtics timeout.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:52 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I still can't count
I guess it was five, not seven. Not on my game tonight I guess.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Q2 7:54 - Right back in it
Giricek's three off LB's assist makes it a three-point game. 35-32, Celtics.

Q2 7:24 - The Alien has landed
Cassell and Amare trade jumpers to keep the deficit at three.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:55 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Ugh!
I am still at work and when I got my first peek at the score online, my first thought was gee, it would be nice if someone had come to play other than Amare and Shaq (Nash has some assists so I will give him a pass).  My co-worker, a native of Detroit, asked me if my middle name was Pollyanna when I said they had plenty of time to come back, like he had never heard of a team coming back from down 13 points.

by TwinnerA on Mar 26, 2008 5:57 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 6:35 - LOL
Amare somehow manages to get Perkins in the air while he was shooting a desperate, beat the shot clock three-pointer. Anybody know if Amare has ever gone to the line for three before?

...perhaps not. He misses one. Guess he's just used to having to make two.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 5:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 6:00 - Sometimes Amare
...is just too good. Still a three-point game at 41-38, Celtics.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:00 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 5:44 - Jump!
Hmm... Usually they don't break out that Van Halen classic unless theres a jump ball.

...meanwhile, a Ray Allen three opens the Celtics lead to six.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:04 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 4:42 - I wonder if Shaq leads the league...
...in shots rolling off the rim? Can't catch a break.

At least he gets to the line. Which isn't necessarily a good thing.

In this case, it is, though as he gets them both. 44-40, Celtics.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 4:09 - Raja for three!
After Nash finds him wide-open. That was classic old-style Suns. Well, "old" as in 2004-2007.

What's Shaq's FT
stat's since he joined the suns ?

by lobsang on Mar 26, 2008 6:07 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Not sure
It's always an adventure when he goes to the line, but it seems like he's been better lately. His form is noticeably better, even if it still misses about as often as it makes. Some of his earlier ones in this game looked like he'd backslid a bit but those last ones were fine.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Q2 3:47 - Foul trouble for Shaq
Shaq joins Grant Hill on the bench with some undesired rest. At least Amare only has one.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:07 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 2:31 - Fitting...
...after all our discussions about Nash earlier today that he'd save his first made shot of the game to put the Suns on top.

50-48, Suns after the exchange of buckets.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:09 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q2 1:15 - Nash for three!
...but he'd better watch it or he's going to get a tech for complaining about the blocking call.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:10 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

...but he has a point
Replay don't lie. That was truly a lame call.

HORRIBLE foul called on Nash right there! Definite charge!

Put it this way
I almost never complain about refs. I figure they have a tough job, the game moves fast, and it's easy enough to miss something. But that last one was truly lame.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Q2 1:04 - Refs deserved a technical
...that time, not Nash. But the Celt's end up with three points on the tech shot and two from Paul Pierce. Remember that play, folks, if this game comes down to a single possession at the end.

All tied up after the three Pierce makes.

What A Comeback!
Hell of a well played quarter, momentum is on our side now.  If only our crafty veterans weren't commiting rookie fouls.  Did you like how Stoudemire interpreted the question about the game so far as entirely about him?  Shit, that might make Kobe blush.  And even though this is DJ country I hope you all realize he's probably shut down for the year.

by MichiganSunsFan on Mar 26, 2008 6:29 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

At the half
That substitution of LB for Skinner for LB didn't work out so well. Boston gets it to Rondo who takes it right into Nash as though he wasn't even there. All tied up at 57 heading into halftime.

After digging into an early hole, the Suns recovered nicely in the second quarter. In fact, they might be leading by three were it not for that aforementioned bogus blocking call. After the rough start, the game has taken on more of the nail-biting characteristics I was expecting.

Numbers:

  • 62% for the Suns, 47% for the Celtics.
  • 11 offensive rebounds for the Celtics and 9 turnovers by the Suns = eight more shot attempts for the Celts.
  • Amare has 22 points on 8-10, and just one foul.
  • Nash has 8 assists with just one turnover, but is below par from the field with 2-5 overall and 1-2 from three.
  • Shaq is having a nice game except for the fouls. 4-5, and 2-3 on free throws.
  • Giricek has been perfect, at least from the field. 3-3, including a make from three.
  • The "good" Diaw showed up for this one. 4-6 for eight points, and also has five assists and four rebounds.
  • LB apparently left his game on the team bus, with a line of all zeros except for one assist that's canceled out by one turnover. Grant Hill's line doesn't look so great either, but he might still deserve an injury pass.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:34 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 11:40 - Not a good start to the second
Shaq pulls a Diaw and passes when he should have shot, resulting in a turnover that leads to a quick Boston score. A second turnover isn't quite as damaging, but the Celtics are still up by two. 59-57.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:41 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 9:57 - Dodged a bullet on that one
Rondo to Perkins somehow ends up in a blown "bunny" as the announcers call it, and Nash and Hill hook up for one of those patented long pass assist+easy ones.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:43 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 8:12 - Amare prevents his own turnover
Getting back the deflected pass. Suns tie it, but not for long. Ray Allen puts the Celtics back up by two at 67-65.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:45 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 7:18 - Almost a sweet play
Shaq tries to sneak one to Amare, but can't beat the three-second violation. Celtics open it up to four on the other end.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:46 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 6:33 - Nice block by Hill
...but he sends it out of bounds and the Celtics score anyway on the KG jumper.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:47 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 5:24 - Amare is going places
And not in a good way. That's at least the second, and maybe third time he's gotten called for the travel off the Nash pass.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:52 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 4:42 - There you go, 3D!
Diaw at his post-up best, twists and turns his way into the hook.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 3:20 - D'oh!
Amare fouls James Posey on a three-point make, resulting in the four-point play. Celtics lead is back up to eight at 77-69.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:55 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 2:47 - Oh wow...
Rondo totally embarrasses Nash with the ankle-breaker. Steve won't live that one down for the rest of the evening. Nash takes out his revenge on Posey, rather viciously slamming into him on the blocking foul. Hey, Posey didn't do it!

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 6:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 2:40 - Amare ties to shoot
...through the entire Celtics defense. Predictable block results.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 7:00 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 1:30 - Getting chippy
Shaq takes exception to having to wear Rondo as a backpack, and gets a technical for shaking him off.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 7:02 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Q3 1:24 - Shaq on fire from the free throw line
Makes them both for the second straight time tonight. 80-71, Celtics.

by TexSUN on Mar 26, 2008 7:03 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

After three
If Rondo and KG don't kill us, the turnovers will. The third quarter ends ugly with a pair of turnovers that keep the Suns from getting off a final shot. Celtics take an 11-point lead into the fourth, so the Suns will need a repeat of Q2 if they want to avoid the 2-game losing streak.

The Suns are shooting nearly 56% to the Celtics' 46%, but when the other team gets 16 more shot attempts thanks to turnovers and offensive rebounds, it shouldn't be surprising that you're behind.

Amare is still stuck on 22 points, and he has five of the Suns' 16 turnovers.

Q4 10:19 - Baking apples
Suns continue to make turnovers, and the Celtics' continue to show their gratitude by making the Suns pay. Paul Pierce's three-point play gives the Celtics a 14-point lead, and Nash an early call back into the game.

Q4 8:31 - Killing me
Raja gets called for the offensive foul negating Amare's bucket, and putting another red mark in the turnover column.

Couldn't agree more...
...with Doc Rivers: "We're getting everything we want". Couldn't agree more. Celtics up by 16, and Pierce is getting cocky.

I'm beside myself

What another nationally televised debacle.

by ZonaFlash on Mar 26, 2008 7:20 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Do you...
realize how many passes of the suns that are off, resulting in turnovers but also giving the Celts extra time to rotate to our shooters...

Q4 7:30 - Trading baskets won't get it done
Suns have scored on back-to-back possessions, but you've gotta get a stop. Celtics make it to 100 on the Paul Pierce (who else?) jumper, and the Celtics are closing in on the Andrew Jackson lead after KG joins the killing spree. 19-point lead for the guys in green. Not. Good.

Hate to disagree...
We don´t have time to come back from that big of a lead...Hope they prove me wrong..

I said the same thing

once during a game against Dallas.  Down by 15 with 2 minutes to go.

My gf said we should see the end.  It was the first suns game she ever saw.

Suns won!  My gf made me look stupid and like a disbeliever fan.

Never again!

Q4 6:21 - Now the Boston crowd gets loud
You'd have never guessed they were cheering for the team with the best record in the league until now. Nash shows up with the three, but we needed that MUCH sooner.

..speaking of former MVP's, KG at the line is getting a much-deserved serenade.

ESPN cuts to the Hornets vs. Cavs game
...maybe by the time we get back to Suns vs. Celtics, the score will look a bit more respectable.

Hey those of you watching the local broadcast
...keep us posted. Looks like ESPN is going to finish up this Cavs/Hornets game, which has gone to the wire with 7 seconds left. Let us know if we miss anything interesting.

CP3 = MVP!
He won't get it, but that assist to give David West the open look for the game winner was his 20th to win the game and also for CP3 to officially take the league lead in assists per game.

Ouch!

Down 22, Nash on the bench?

Yeah, we done.

by ZonaFlash on Mar 26, 2008 7:30 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

And

Hornets win

Q4 3:40 - Mike throws in the towel
Celtics lead by 20, and Nash's night looks to be over as well as Shaq's. Amare stays in for stat-padding purposes, presumably. I'm shutting down the live blog at this point to get an early jump on the recap. Thanks everyone who followed along and/or chimed in. Hopefully we'll get a better game next time.

Back to panic mode???
Embarrassed on National TV is becoming the suns Thing...

Heartbreak Hotel!

In one sense, it's simply another road loss to a great, great NBA team.

But that's not why they lost this one - the suns beat themselves in this game.

  • going down by 15 early, rather than being up early by 15.
  • Not rebounding at all.  Amare 1 rebound in the first half.
  • turning over the ball on ridiculously sloppy plays.

Crap
We'll miss the POs if we play like this ever again.

Wow
Surprised to see you jumping off the bandwagon so soon
Phx - where grrrrr happens

Wow

Bright Side: Suns shoot 56%!!
Dark Side: Suns pass 56%!!

Seriously. 21 turnovers to 27 assists.  Suns took 18 fewer shots than the Celtics...  The suns also went to the line 9 fewer times.

How about a little more care in handling the ball and a little less complaining to the officials?

Well
Perhaps it was bad luck that I read the poem Casey at the Bat last night.  Danmit!!!!

For some reason...
...this game makes me sadder than any other we've lost since the Shaq trade.

Orange got crushed
0-2 in the orange crush unis so far on this road trip.  I hope they brought along the traditional road purple and wear them on Friday at Philadelphia. Also, they better bring their "A" game Fri. as Philadelphia has been winning a lot lately!

by TwinnerA on Mar 26, 2008 11:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, please
If the Suns break out the purple, then something good will have come from these losses. I truly abhor those orange crush uniforms. They don't look good on TV at all.
