Suns Sign Gordan Giricek

According to East Valley Tribune, Gordan Giricek is now officially a Sun.

Welcome to our pity party team, Gordan!

Seriously, kudos to the young man for sticking to his guns in all this. Here's a hypothetical conversation I'm hoping will take place in the Suns locker room today:

GG: Hey everyone! Why so gloomy?

Nash: Well, you may have read about it in the papers, things aren't going so well right now. I can't seem to get a handle on this, turnovers are up, defense is down, the losses are piling up. Everybody hates us now.

GG: Are you kidding me??? You're a two-time MVP! You can get the ball to anybody, any time, and when you can't get the ball to anybody, you can knock it down right between the eyes! You're the reason I wanted to play on this team!

Nash: Thanks, man. You just made my day. [Proceeds to lay about 20 assists on the Blazers while torching Steve Blake with 20 points of his own. All starters in double-figures, Suns win by 30.].

[Update 3:00PM MT]: Well worth the wait is Paul Coro's AZ Republic article on the signing, featuring some nice quotes from Giricek, as well as confirming that he will indeed be with the team tonight and is even expected to play.

I like
Well as long as Gordan can get some good production off the bench then i'll be happy.  Sure as hell will make our second unit better, DJ is just too much of a work in progress to really contribute consistantly this year.

hey
i saw that espn had their lotto machine up. DJ Augustin sounds like a really good pick right about now. Is there really anyone else the suns should even consider? Bother than selling it for cash as is now unwelcome tradition.

Not the Savior
Coach D says he's not the savior, but Coro is hoping this is the Second Coming of Tim Thomas.

Oh, what a beleaugered state we're in.

All he needs to be is

Tim Thomas
I forgot to mention in the Blazer game thread where we were enumerating the personnel disasters in recent years.  The failure to sign Tim Thomas.

I don't understand...

I liked Tim Thomas a lot.  He saved our assess so many times.  He was insoucient and cool as all hell.

But it was stolen time that could not be regained. Even if we signed him, he wouldn't be the same, I think.

Agreed
Agreed ... and a no-brainer.  Look what he did for the Clips -- nothing.  Look what he did before that -- next to nothing.  Suns made a good move by not over-paying him like the Clips did.

TT
I agree with you except for one thing - the money he would have gotten was used for Banks.  And he suffered with the Clips because they have no Nash.

Very Weird
I just went to nba.com to look up his stats, and he is not listed as a current player.

Very unsettling.

Crap
Now I have to dust off my Serbo-Croatian dictionary (from when I was in the Army in Tuzla in 1996) to insult this guy when he proceeds to shoot 30% and not add anything to this team....or on the Bright Side I could be praising him to the heavens and buying rounds of pivo for everyone...

Frankly, I have no clue or expectation what this guy will bring.

I think the Suns problems aren't going to be solved by adding a guy that got kicked out of Utah who needed a shooter and got one in return (and went on a tear after the trade) and couldn't play for the 76ers.

But, according to media flack Tom Chambers he is a better player then Brent Barry. There is that.

I certainly don't think he'll hurt
but I've always thought that he's completely useless as a player. He's not even that good of a 3PT shooter, more of a mid-range guy.

He won't hurt from the bench...
that's likely where he'll be as soon as the Suns get a few points behind

From what I saw

G-square got booted from Utah b/c of interpersonal problems with Sloan, not because he sucked.

Then in Philly, why trade Korver for someone similar?

Because they didnt want to win as much anymore with Korver, they wanted an expiring contract which they got.  That trade for Philly was not about a player, it was about getting cheap and losing with their young players.  (And beating a sloppy suns team too.)

A small positive thing not to miss was that the Sixers were very motivated to keep G-square out of their conference.  You typically only make those conditions if you feel he was still a small risk to hurt the SIXERS.

Whether his 3PT% mark will improve in PHX just depends on whether we can get him open or not.

Gettting shooters open
that's really the key isn't it.

This is my point about Raja. I don't think his numbers are down (back to where they were before coming here) b/c he's getting worse. They are down b/c he isn't getting all those wide open 3's he used to get when the Suns played like the Warriors do now.

I don't have a problem w/ that. The Suns (or Warriors) couldn't win only play fast. The Suns were slowing it down and working more on half court sets all year even before the trade.

Now of course they look like a pre-season team so of course Bell isn't open. No one is. I don't see how GG will be any different.

He can't create his shot like Hill can right? Is he going to get open looks w/ LB running point?

He's a best a nice insurance player that could spot start if there's injuries. But he won't end up playing much after a few quick looks from Diantoni unless someone goes down.

TC, Oh, the memories.
How about a 6'10 SF/PF that can run the floor and score 60 in a game?  Wouldn't that be good now?  Oh, I forgot.  Chambers is too old.

Umm... assuming you're serious about that
...which I doubt you are, I think the Hornets have first dibs. The guess is he signs with them, if he hasn't already.

(Would have taken a flier on him at the right price before trading for Shaq, though).
