Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets

Phoenix Suns
at

Denver Nuggets
40-20 35-24
7:00 PM Mountain / 9:00 PM Eastern
TV: My45 HD, ESPN
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Anthony Carter
Raja Bell SG Allen Iverson
Grant Hill SF Carmelo Anthony
Amare Stoudemire PF Kenyon Martin
Shaquille O'Neal C Marcus Camby

No time to write a preview at the moment, but since we could all use a good laugh around here, I point you in the direction of this lovely little sideshow as well as the followup on TrueHoop.

Pick Axe and Roll has the view of the game from the Nuggets fan side. Sounds like they're a little positive thinkingly-challenged like we've been lately.

Live blogging commences at tipoff in the comments of this post.

ok
this is another good test, with the blazers recently beating the lakers, last night was big, but so is this. We're going to see 1 of 2 things as far as energy goes
  1. Hustle on both ends in the first half like last night and do well
  2. Ignore defense
I think if the suns true problem last night in the second half was fatigue (which I think it was, among other factors)...then this first half should be great to watch again. But if the suns come out so so, then it's clear to me that the mentality and drive of this team is in trouble, not dead or anything, but in trouble.

Trying to be optimistic, predicting a win by suns,
but close again.

I have no idea
Last night I had a pretty strong feeling the fella's would react to all negative press and being called out everywhere.

Tonight, on a back to back, I wonder if they won't coast just enough to lose. Or perhaps they will show some signs of improvement and come out strong.

Denver doesn't play D and other then Camby and without Nene they aren't a great rebounding team.

We will miss Shawn tonight though on Melo. That's another guy that the Matrix would regularly shut down.

Anyway, its a test. That's for sure. A lose to the 9th seed won't be a good sign at this point in the season. Time to step it up.

The key to the game
Raja. If he can shut AI, we're in good shape. And I think we should try Stoudemire on Melo. It's crazy, but it might work. I really don't think too much of K-Mart, and I can't see him giving us trouble.

Good Opportunity
I think we'll see the Suns come out of the gate just like last night.  As said before, the real challenge will probably be the second half.  I'd like to see Shaq play a bit less.  Is Skinner part of the team anymore?

I also believe much of our struggle last night was due to foul trouble on Stoudamire.

Gordon Giricek didn't look awful in my opinion.  He did look a bit lost and very winded at times though.

Lets pull another win out and shut up a few of our many detractors.

Stiff test
Remember Karl and Iverson thought last game's late threes were unnecessary, so they will be motivated.  I think that's stupid, you play to do well for 48 minutes.  Anyway, the Suns have to be focused.

I would like to see DJ for a few minutes on Iverson.  I suppose Diaw/Hill will take Carmelo, and Amare has Kenyon Martin.  He should torch Martin.  In a battle against the aftereffects  of microfracture, Amare has fared better.  Amare is used to being covered by Camby, but Marcus has to cover Shaq.  Watch out for JR Smith off of the bench.

Throw it into the Big Fella

I like it to start the game.  Put some fouls on the other team, get into the penalty early, force the double team and get the spacing.

Not sure what the trainers put in Nash's shake today, but man.... Vintage Nash with the pass, and Diaw with the dunk.

...and now with the down the court to LB. Yeah, safe to say Nash is in one of those "assist zones" at the moment. Already seven and we're barely two-thirds through the first.

End of First
Nice effort, good to see Shaq get the Nuggets into the penalty early. Love the ball movement.  Need to get back on transition defense, they're fast as hell too.  Glad fatface Anthony is quiet so far.

After one
It's a shootout! So far, the most fun game to watch since Marion left town, with or without Shaq on the floor. Of course, one quarter of a good/fun game doesn't really mean anything, so we need to see it three more times. Suns up four at 36-32.

Numbers that are good:

  • Nash with 7 assists; always a good indicator of how well the offense is flowing.
  • Amare with 4-4 from the field.
  • Suns with a one-rebound edge on the board.
  • Shaq with some early involvement, especially on the boards.
  • 64% from the field to the Nuggets' 47%.
Numbers that are bad:
  • Amare and Raja with the two fouls
  • Amare with the tech
  • Shaq from the line (still an eyesore, even at 2-4).

Shaq not touching the ball
out on the floor anymore.

I didn't notice either way last night in Portland but its clear that they are going away from that plan. The one time Nash did give to Shaq as he trailed up the floor Shaq and Bell weren't on the same page and he threw it away.

Other they that, no more high screen and rolls w/ the big fella. Its all either going in to the post or treating him like Brian Skinner on offense.

I like it.

They did a LOT of in the post to Shaq last night. Unfortunately, I noticed it most during that third quarter...i.e., the result wasn't necessarily a good thing. But he does look must less awkward down there.

Nuggets have gotten back in it and taken the lead as the Suns offense has stalled a bit, and the Nuggets' fastbreak has gone the other direction.

Kind of funny
Announcers are talking about how the Nuggets could have used Sam Cassell for veteran leadership to tell guys to just shut up and play when they're complaining to the refs, etc. So, that would be the same Sam Cassell that never shuts up on the court, right? Denver is playing extremely well.  Lets hope we can bring last nights first half to tonights second half.

by MichiganSunsFan on Mar 5, 2008 8:22 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

At the half
Well, bad news first, Suns trail by seven, despite scoring 61. So defense continues to be a challenge.

Good news: Aside from that dry spell when Nash was resting, the offense has looked better than it has maybe since before the trade. Gotta get some stops in the second half, though, but the nice run at the end made it a lot more respectable.

Still too many turnovers. Shaq has five. Maybe things are moving a bit too fast for him? :)

Suns are outshooting the Nuggets 56%-52%, and outrebounding them too, but the Nuggets still have 10 more shot attempts thanks to the turnovers (most of which went straight in the hole on the fast break, making the defense look worse than it actually is). In other words, take care of the ball and there's no reason the Suns shouldn't come back to win this because they're pretty much getting it done every where else.

After three
Well, last night we had 1/2 a good game. Tonight we had 1/4 of a good game, with the occasional bright spot here and there. Turnovers have really done the Suns in tonight. Nash and Shaq are the primary culprits with 5 each (with a couple of those on botched passes to one another). Scoring is nice and balanced with seven Suns in double figures. Shooting still around 53%. But the 17 turnovers are killing us, since the Nuggets seem to have made good on just about every one. Can we get our first fourth quarter comeback of the Shaq era? Stay tuned...

This game is done

second half of a back-to-back loss on the road against a decent team

I think Shaq is looking fine on the court and +/- and stat wise.

The rest of the team needs to speed it up a bit to bring back the Matrix magic.  I felt Amare was lethargic.  Boris will get better getting his passes right in the shooters' pockets.

We still have to work on TOs but that will come when the team plays together more.  I prefer to see the aggression and that they are trying things.  Now is the time to make the mistakes and learn what each player can and cannot do.

Putting on the rose-colored glasses...
...and saying that I think, as out of control this game has gotten, I think a corner is being turned for the better here...

Wait, Shaq and Nash on the bench with 4 minutes to go?  I'll hold that thought.

Q4 4:27 - Tossing in the towel
Nash and Shaq to the bench. Kind of surprised to see that happen so soon.

Yeah I agree

Unlike DAntoni to give up.

Great STAT can pad his stats in garbage time

Way to feed that mentality.

Is this about accountability maybe?
Doesn't seem very "D'Antoni-like" to bench Nash for making mistakes, but I wonder if that's what it's about? Shaq's benching is nothing new; been doing that all along. But very strange to see D'Antoni toss in the towel with over four minutes to go.

Well, if D'Antoni is giving up...
...then so am I. Shutting down the live blogging a bit early. Thanks everyone for following along and chiming in. Recap will be posted after while. Got a few other things to wrap up first.
