Suns can't out score the Jazz: 118 - 126

This was a great game, yes, we lost, yes, it looks bad for us right now. But this was not the Suns team that got hammered by Detroit on national tv (side note, if you actually click on this link to read about that Detroit game, make sure your not near a bridge). This was the Suns who beat Boston a few games ago.

Things to feel great about,

1. Raja Bell, his shooting returned in force making 5 for 9 from 3 pt land. His toughness and defense was more evident than usual, it made me think of the Raja Bell who didn't want to be friends with Kobe. Only negative, he hasn't played like this all season, great to see Raja play like this, anxious for more Sunday.

2. Amare, I think he did great, his ability to drive and score kept us in the game and with a little more luck, would've fouled out their top 1-2 players a little sooner. Only negative, 13-18 from the line.

3. Shaq, great also, excpet for having him try to score at the end, (mistake on coach's part? or on Shaq not understanding that he's the worst free throw shooter in the world). But there were many pluses to his game. Shaq hit multiple 3-5 foot jumpers and looked (for the first time with the Suns) good doing it. Shaq really is helping this team, I think it's other areas that we're hurting.

For those areas, I would say team defense, again hurt us. We just couldn't stop Utah at the end.
I read earlier on this blog that Nash could at least hang defensively with Williams, this is not true. But, Nash had 15 assists to 3 turnovers, thats the type of game we need from him if the Suns are going to compete. And as you'd expect from a great player, he sacrificed having Boozer run over him to give the Suns another shot at winning. I've always thought with Nash and defense, he does try hard, hard to compete with the nba getting so much better..

Player of the game, it's a 4-way tie for me between Okur, Korver, Boozer, and Williams. Seriously, watching Okur hit 3 pointer after 3 pointer was a big momentum change I think for the Suns, just as they were trying to build on their lead. Boozer is what he always is, dependable, tough, just a great, non flashy player. Williams tied Nash for 15 assists also, and made some very tough shots at the end. It seems Williams doesn't have to work as hard for his assists while Nash has to use every trick and drive into the paint to get his. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND, Once again, Deron Williams didn't have to work as hard for his 15 assists. Why did I put Korver in there, because he was deflecting Nash passes and hitting his shots while our shooters were folding at crunch time. Yes, L.B. made a three, but he missed many more 1 for 7!! and he's taking our last shots? I would've used Nash or Bell before L.B., or even stuck with Amare drawing fouls and scoring.

Why? It's really simple, Utah played better defense and did a good job of applying pressure and double teams on Nash. Where on defense the Suns had many good moments, but often were 4 on 5 with Shaq still coming up the court and the Suns scrambling to just get a hand in someone's face as they shot. It seemed the Utah Jazz guards could blow past Nash at any time creating a 5 on 4 situation many times.

Bottom line, we're lucky if we're still in the top ten teams in the NBA. But, the good news is we're improving over the last few games and if we hang on and make the playoffs, and if we continue to get better, and Shaq gets his legs back, I think we have a chance. It should be very interesting watching this Sunday's game against the Spurs. The Spurs are on a big win streak (currently 11 I think) and it'd be a great victory to be the team that breaks it. I know it's tough as a Suns fan to see us fall out of the top record so quickly, but there are things to be positive about.

  1. We beat the Celtics

  2. We beat the Trailblazers, who had just beat the Lakers

  3. We were close to winning this game

  4. Shaq is playing with motivation

  5. Raja Bell's heart and desire are back

  6. Diaw is playing better and made some great hustle plays and passes

Things to be seriously depressed about and head to the fridge to go eat everything then go out to Taco Bell.

  1. L.B. (need I say more..sadly)

  2. D.J., why aren't we playing him..?

  3. Skinner, why aren't we playing him?

  4. Our perimeter defense comes and goes, there were times in multiple recent games where I actually got excited about the Suns hustle and effort on defense, but it fades like an oasis in the desert. I don't think it fades because of heart, I think it's because of 2 things,
1...Energy, the Suns aren't used to spending so much energy on Defense, that has to take its toll.

2...The Suns biggest problem is that for years they haven't focused on Defense, and it's clear that to win, they're going to have to.

This is really tough to write about, any other year with the West not being so close, these loses wouldn't sting quite as much. Also, let's face it, this Suns team isn't built like the Trailblazers or the Lakers who have great long term outlooks, our team looks very similar to the Celtics, this year or next, or nothing.

For all of you who are really upset, I can only say this, I enjoyed the game. Even though we lost,
I enjoyed it.

Watching Shaq dive to tip a ball and keep it in play,

Watching Amare drive and score,

Watching Bell come alive and hit 5 three pointers and play great defense,

Watching Nash drive into the lane and disappear only to make a pass to an open big man for the dunk

Watching Diaw go after his own rebound and score

The team that beat us tonight played well also, and there's always this Sunday, where after this game, I really think we have a fair shot at beating the Spurs. UPDATE - LOOKS LIKE THE SPURS WILL LOSE TONIGHT, DOWN 96 TO 81 WITH 5 MINUTES LEFT.

Second update on Spurs, I'm not a Spurs fan at all, they're enemy number one. But, I can't help but notice as they lose tonight the look on Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili's faces as they look on knowing they lost tonight. It really bothers them, alot, I hate to say this, but I don't think the Suns are angry enough or hungry enough, I don't see that look of "How could we ever lose?" on their faces.

Just for fun Link to Hack a shaq

Also for a quick laugh,

Final note...I think when the Suns finally win a championship, we'll be happier and more appreciative then fans on teams that have won a few titles. With great struggle, comes great reward, it's a simple decision for me, I'M A SUNS FAN.

The Suns
Are looking better... Just that. Shaq is being good, and let's face it, he's being good during all his time here at Phoenix. Don't give the man a hard time. We miss Shawn, but Shawn is an asshole, we would lose him anyway. So the players are starting to be able to live with that. Finding Gira is no reason to take DJ and Skinner out of rotation.

The crappy part about it, it's that always at least one of our player perform at a highly poor level. And we more often than not lose because of that. Barbosa wasn't the same Barbosa that won 6th man last year. But before it was Nash, Bell, Hill, you name it. If everyone gets it right, we're still the best team in the league.

yep, I agree
Not sure what's going on with L.B., it seems he's struggling with the change a lot. L.B. is similar to
Marion, he's best at running. It was nice to still see some fast breaks by the suns tonight. They are getting better. Funny thing, most everyone thought it'd be shaq would or wouldn't be good enough, but really its about our other players playing and scoring consistently. Shaq has been great.

But it is Shaq
I mean I agree that Shaq is playing well and getting better. But the insertation of that huge bolder in the pond is what's causing all these waves with everyone else.

Its the disruption of a system and style of play and cohesiveness on the court that had been built over several years. Suddendly they are starting from scratch.

And while Shaq is great on the boards and getting better on offense he is still and will always be a liability on defense b/c he simply can't move well enough to come out from the basket and cover the pick and roll or close out fast enough against the smaller faster front line shooter like Gasol and Boozer. They have traded one liability - low post D - for another.

Btw - when this team was winning, it wasn't b/c everyone was clicking at the same time. If you go back and look it was almost always a few guys that had big nights, a few others that had decent nights, and a few more that disappeared. That was the great thing about this team. They were so balanced and didn't need everything to go perfect to win.

Oh, and also it's pretty clear that 118 points should be enough to win a game so its not like they can't find the basket.

Its about D. And specifically team D. Learning to play together again. Learning a new system.

I do think that this team - if it can stay healthy as it ages - is very very good. I just worry that there is enough time left, and enough defensive coaching talent and emphasis, to get it together in 6 weeks when the old pre-trade team had already figured it out.

I'd be worried
Shaq said it would take four or five games and then the Suns would be the most dangerous team ever created. It's been nine. Gasol was plugged into the Lakers lineup and they've gone like 16-2. He's had some bad games too. Obviously, he's a better fit for the Lakers system, but the biggest difference I think is health. He's not broken down. Shaq even when he is "healthy" is as you say, a liability.

The rest home.
TheSuns used to run teams ragged and them kill them in the fourth quarter.  Now it is reversed, the Suns can play anyone for three quarters and then fold.  Could it be because three of their five starters are in their mid-thirties?

Coach responds to our critque
Straight from the horse's you fill in which end
D'Antoni doesn't want to hear it. Nothing raises his hackles like criticism about his short bench.

"The object is to win," he said earlier Friday. "It's not, 'Play everybody and have a good time and everybody goes home friends.' I'm getting ticked, because our (starters) are playing less minutes than anybody in the league."

He has a point about the misconception of his starters' minutes. The Suns have zero players in the top 27 of minutes per game in the Western Conference. Raja Bell is 28th with 35.5 minutes. Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers each have three players above that.

You want crazy minutes, look at Allen Iverson (42.4), Stephen Jackson (39.5) and Baron Davis (39.4).

The suggestion that D'Antoni go deeper is mind-boggling to him.

"OK, I don't want to play Steve (Nash), I want to play D.J. (Strawberry). Yeah, that makes sense," he said.

D'Antoni wasn't ripping Strawberry as much as he was trying to reiterate what he always has believed: He sticks with players he trusts and refuses to apologize for it.

This is where it gets dicey. The window of opportunity for players to prove themselves closes quickly in this neighborhood. Once it's closed, it's hard to crawl back through.

"We're here to win a championship," he said. "We're not here to develop players."

I've been liking this coach less and less
In my mind, practice should be harder, because, lets face it, they're not getting it done

On the lakers, the lakers already had kobe, a guy who is the best player in the league, we have nash, who although I love to watch and cheer for, has been
turning the ball over a lot (although for obvious reasons, their system has changed).

Myopic Comments
I've always stood up for Coach D, but this is just stupid.

Developing a bench is how you win a championship.  It's one of the ingrdients.  Remember Game 5 from last year?

Also, the reason there's such a huge drop-off between Nash and DJ is because DJ doesn't get enough PT.  DJ has shown the coaching staff he has promise, so why don't they give him a chance to improve?

I'm reminded of a Dan Marjerle criticism of Scott Skiles -- it was that, with Skiles, you never knew how many minutes you were going to get.  A player just wants to know what's expected of him, wants to know what he can expect, and wants to know how the coach is gauging his performance (kind of like any worker).  This is Management 101 stuff.

This is why Pop and Jackson are good coaches.  I'm starting to believe this is why D'Antoni is a great offensive coordinator and that's about it.  This is why it's not about Shaq or Marion.

When Steve and Shaq aren't playing..
just bring out Skinner and DJ and hold off our scorings and the opponent's.  Don't bring out smaller (and weaker) Barbosa or Diaw to replace those two!

Nice suggestion

Instead of trying to get faster, why not try to get slow as molasses and just lock down the game while Nash gets a blow?

If there's only two possessions a minute, we can't lose more than about 12 points when Nash is out!  And that assumes we shoot 0% and they 100%!

Defensive Woes
Wasn't moving Aamre to the 4 going to allow him to roam more on the perimeter, where he's "better suited" to play defense?  So, why was Okur so open.

Raja did a good job on D, but he cannot be counted on to bail out the Suns regularly like he did last night (both on offense and defense).

Why did Shaq leave Boozer to double Korver at the end of the game?  Really?  Nash was on Korver tight and when was the last time Korver pulled up for a contested, running 20-footer to ice the game?  Much more than the missed free throw at the edn of the game, this was his worst play of the night.  The Suns were down by 2, Utah's offense was discombobulated with the shot clock running out and Shaq freed up their best player.  Smooth.  Result?  Jazz up by four with 30 seconds left.  The Suns used to win these games.

Re-watched last quarter
This really was a great game and after re-watching the last quarter I don't feel nearly as bad.

The Jazz started the quarter hitting 5 straight shots. They got some luck with a non-call on Milsap bunny hop and otherwise just played well. The Suns played well and LB and Shaq created two wide open looks for GG which he missed.

When Nash and Amare came back in the pace really picked up. LB hit a big three and the game was neck and neck.

One thing that really stood out was two plays where first Bell left Korver at the arc to help stop D-Will penetration on a high screen which had Shaq and Nash clogged up on the left side high arc. Shaq actually did a great job jumping out and stopping Williams but Bell had cheated off Korver anticipating Williams getting free. Deron found the wide open Korver who hit his three.

The next was Diaw basically doing the same thing except he left Okur. This time though he was just sagging off him and seemed to forget that the big ugly 7fter can actually shoot. He was wide open and he made his shot.

On the flip side the Suns got LB two opens threes and Bell an open look and all three were misses.

Despite that the game was tied at 114. Deron hit two amazing shots that were both highly contested. On one he drew a foul from Shaq and was falling down and threw the ball at the rim and it went it. On the other Bell was all over him but he managed to hit a really tough fade away. He was awesome.

Another key play was the pass from Nash that Korver got a hand on and ended up drawing the foul from Nash. That was a huge 4pt swing late in the game. And then of course after playing great D for about 23 seconds Boozer hits this insane high arching shot that even he didn't think had a prayer but it clacked of the back of the rim and fell in. Tough luck on that one.

So, while the Suns gave up 41 points in the final quarter, 4 of those were last second desparation fouls and then Korver also got bailed out on a foul from Hill at the 3pt line. Hill ran into him long after the ball was released and that was a bad call. That's another 3 pts.

The Jazz are a VERY good team with a lot of depth and the ability to score from both inside, outside and on penetration. They pass the ball very well and usually play decent D. And they are tough and one year more experience and deeper then the team that made it to the WCF last year.

They are right there at the top of the West despite their crappy road record.
