On Liveblogging

I took my first shot at liveblogging the other night and from the feedback I've received, I did a fairly good job at it.  It was kind of a weird, grueling, lonely, nerdy experience.  It was also a blast and I hope to do it again at some point.

Star-divide

I'm curious to see what the folks around these parts are looking to get from their liveblogger d'jour.  I tried to do equal parts play-by-play and commentary, though in the future, I think I may veer more towards the commentary part of it.  I think it's pretty safe to operate under the assumption that most people have access to a television or radio and are following the game that way.  And if not, that's why the live updates at the various sports websites exist.

As a liveblogger, let me tell you there is nothing more depressing that clicking "Post" and seeing that you've just rattled off 18 consecutive posts with nary a comment.  I think that liveblogging should be an interactive experience with the designated LBer feeding off the comments of others.  That said, when trying to follow the ups and downs of a fast game like basketball (and wishing, hoping, praying for fouls and time-outs when the pace gets too hectic), it's also tough to review what other people are commenting.

That's why I dig the new Cover It Live software.  By operating like chat software, it takes the pain out of scrolling up to review comments and makes the process much more of a give-and-take.

So now that I've said my piece, what do you expect from the liveblog experience as either blogger or commenter?

Live Blogging
I like it.  You have to type fast, and no daydreaming.  It's like keeping score in baseball.  You have to pay attention, or you'll get lost.

I find it difficult
I typically don't like to live blog b/c it is so hard. First, I love to use the magic tivo powers to pause, rewind and look at interesting plays a few times before moving on. Can't do that while LB'ing.

Second, I can get into the flow of the game myself and form an overall opinion. The game is reduced to small bites of information. Series of events. For me, the joy of analyzing a basketball game is the ebbs and flows. The adjustments. You see these things by watching not each play but the feel of the overall play. I miss that while live blogging. Which is why I either get behind the live action (which really just makes it after the fact blogging) or I don't post enough b/c I am into the game.

TexSun is the master and Chboddis (ok dude listen, we are going to have talk about that screen name. Anything I have to check before typing each time isn't going to work!) did great as well.

Let's hope the new software makes the process and comments come easier. I think its going to be a blast if we are getting comments from the Rockets side as well. That was Ch--whatever'is' idea btw. And a great one!

on the live software
good and bad, I think arguments will get worse with the live factor, but I think the comment / respond to comment thing will be much cooler this way. I used to love the blogging during a game, but now with nbalp and dvr, like Stan, I like to pause and rewind and walk away when needed which kills the live blogging thing. With 3 kids under 5 and more work than time, I'll be live blogging less and less. But it will be neat to check out the new software today. Is this new software like wordpress, something I can setup off my personal website, or does it require $$ to run monthly or something.

live blog software
the software is totally free - for now - at:
http://www.coveritlive.com/

I had set up an account and tested it on our site (hidden of course) within 10 minutes. And while I am geek of all sorts, I am no tech geek.

I'm concerned that it is difficult

to read over earlier posts.  The thing constantly moves you to the most recent message when I want to read the past messages.

This becomes impossible if 20 people are posting.  Or even if just one person posting quickly.

Also, I would like to read over the comments after the game.  Where do they all go?

You can change that
setting at the bottom of the box so that it doesn't jump down to the bottom each time something new posts.

I do really like

the link up with the other team during the block.  That's sweet.

You know we will probably insult our own team more than the opponent and vice versa.

Most of my posts are something like:

"$@&%$^%@!!!!! Doris!!  Traveled like Spitzer's whore again!"

"&@%$@^%$%@!!!! LB!!   Needs some hair to find the hole!"

Okay - I never say anything that bad.  I just say, "@$@%!!!! Doris!!!!  @(#$&^@&%#@!!!! Barbosa!"

I hope Barbosa can hit those open threes this postseason...
