Amare Stoudemire PF Dirk Nowitzki
Shaquille O'Neal C Eric Dampier

On Saturday, NBA TV replayed game 2 of the 2005 semi-finals meeting between the Suns and Mavs. Suns fans will likely most remember this game for the horendous introduction Joe Johnson's face had with the floor courtesy of a hard (but not cheap) Jerry Stackhouse foul.
Stack is appearantly still feeling quilty about that and according to the Mavs game notes is sitting this one out with a groin injury. Feel free to insert your own joke here.

The game - which was extremely entertaining in its own right - got me thinking about the progress of both teams since.

It was a classic performance by the Sun's big three

Pre-knee surgery Amare had 30 and 15 and while he hadn't yet developed his outside shot he was unstoppable in the paint and in isolation. It was interesting to compare his play then and now and realize both how much he's improved and yet how much of the "old" Amare explosivness and aggression we are seeing again over the past few months. Amare is a beast again.

Nash had 23 and 13 and while he's lost some hair since then mostly what's he's gained is more help. That Suns team was very good 1 through 5 but the backup PG was JJ. LB was barely out of diapers and there were no other options for distributing the ball. It was all Nash all the time. And while he was awesome in this game it took its toll. This version of the Suns is so much better in the half court and so much more potent with Nash able to play off the ball.

The other day after the great performance against Denver, Tas Melas of The Basketball Jones (a MUST listen daily podcast) opined that Nash needed to shoot more. I disagreed then and after watching and remembering the Suns of two years ago that relied on Nash being Kobe I am even more convinced - the Suns now are better because they are less dependent on Nash. He's getting easy open looks because his teammates are making things happen without him. Of course, it sure is comforting to know that The Producer can still deliver when he has to.

The Matrix. It was great to see Shawn flying again. For those who say he didn't show up in the playoffs - how does 23 points, 15 reb and 6 blocks sound? Just awesome. Its really a shame what those quacks on the Heat training staff have done to him. Despite everything, I still miss you Shawn and will be rocking my Marion #31 at this year's playoff games.

The Bench. 2005: Jim Jackson, Walter McCarty, Stephen Hunter and Baby Barbosa. 2008: The Brazilian Blur, Diaw, Giricek and Skinner. Need I say more?

The Dallas Two-Step

The Mavericks on the other hand have gone nowhere. Well, its more fair to say they took two steps forward and two steps back. In the two years since they were able to move Harris to a starting role to add speed and defense at the PG and depth and athleticism up front with Diop. They lost Finley - who single-handedly won that game 2 with a slew of HUGE timely 3's and a game high 31 points - but they replaced him with an improved J-Ho and the ability to play Terry off the ball and off the bench.

But then got punked by the Warriors and punched the panic button and they are right back to where they were in 2005. Overly reliant on Dirk and without the versatility and depth that made them so dangerous last year.

The Mavs are still a good team. Dirk can go off and be as unstoppable as anyone in sneakers. But this team is worse then last year's and unless they figure out how to play defense again they are going to have a very early summer.

Phoenix Stan's Nice Things to Have if you Want to Enjoy your Sunday

  • Attack the paint. This is becoming as repeative as it used to be when we said "three point shooting" as a key for the Suns. Fortunately, the percentages are a bit higher now and there's added bonus of drawing fouls. Amare and Shaq need to go right after Dampier early and often. Get him in foul trouble and the cupboard is bare.
  • Hill on Ho. Grant doesn't need to out play the big garden tool. He just needs to keep him somewhat in check. Make him shoot jumpers and deny him the ball. Even with Kidd, I don't think the Mavs have figured out how to play as a team and do much more then run the same isolation plays in the half court.
  • Wake up. Drink some coffee. And have fun.
No live blogging from me. I have babysitting duties all day Sunday (Wife Stan is at a conference) so you'll are on your on in that regard. Enjoy!

oh, and don't forget to drop in our buddies at Mavs Moneyball and ask if they've received their locker room credentials from Cuban yet. And while your there think about all the crap Suns fans have given Sarver and look around Mav's world and just think how much worse it could be.

Big Game
As far as the seeding goes in the West this game could be huge.  Especially if the Warriors pull out a W with the Hornets.

As far as we go though....we just cant afford to lose a game, especially if we want to get that third  or even first seed.

I'm expecting a very close game.  Luckily, though I am at work, I shall be able to watch the game.  Hopefully though I shall get to watch the new and improved Suns and not the February Suns.

Suns will win, but must work hard for it
The Mavs, while dangerous, can be had.  Dirk, while scoring at a 22.5 ppg clip since coming back, still is missing his hops.  He is averaging 4 rebounds, and isn't playing defense all that well.  On defense, we need to force him to move laterally on his bad ankle.  With Kidd, we need to make him a shooter.  He will take advantage of the pace, and probably have a fairly good game.

The first order of business, as it has been since the ?Mavs got Dampier, is for Amare and
Shaq to get him off of the floor.  He needs to get two early fouls.  Since Diop is gone, Shaq and Amare will feast on  whoever they put in there.  Hopefully Shaq remembers to assert himself, and not give Damp the idea he can go toe to toe with our bigs.

Thankfully, noted Suns nemesis Stackhouse is out.  If Kidd ever ends up on Barbosa, we should have a layup.  If I am Avery, I give Amare a dose of Brandon Bass, he is the only big with any quickness outside of the aforementioned wounded Dirk.  But Bass has not played well lately.

I predict a win, say 110-99.  The Suns have too much firepower for the Mavs, and the 'D' is gone in allas.

Huge game
They're all huge at this point regarding seeding.  If the Suns want home court in any of the rounds, they need to run the table.  I don't see them catching New Orleans at this point, but they can definitely catch or pass LA or San Antonio to crack the top 4.

The upcoming game against SA is looming larger and larger as a win would give the Suns a tiebreaker if they finish with the same record.

Oddly my big concern in this game is Jason Terry.  Is it just me or is he the Mavs' version of JR Smith when he plays the Suns? Killer 3s and circus shots galore.

This is a winnable game if the energy and rhythm is there.

Bell on JT
I am counting on Bell being able to keep JT in check. Kidd has never been a tough cover for Nash for Bell can focus all his tremendous defensive energy on JT. And as deadly as he can be, he's no Kobe. Again, the key to defending the Mavs is ball denial and Raja is one of the best off the ball guys. You really have to watch the game again and just focus on what he's doing to his man away from the ball to truly appreciate his work.

Maybe I haven't seen
Kidd play enough - but that's doesn't scare me. If they are posting Kidd on Nash Dallas will still have a big in the rim (unlike when GSW posts up their guards) and so there will be weakside help as well.

In general though I am thinking the most shots Kidd takes the better. And I supose that you could switch Bell and Nash and let Steve cover JT. He's had tougher assignments then that.

Lets Build Off Our Latest Rout
No excuse whatsoever to lose this one.  These teams are headed in completely opposite directions.

End of First Quarter Suns up 28-26
Stoudemire is running wild on the Mavs.  So far the teams are trading scoring runs.  J-Kidd is just not a big offensive threat.

1Q

outrebounded, fewer assists, 2 TOs to none, fewer FTs, same overall FG -

but we're up by 2, thanks to making 2 of 3 3's compared to 0 of 1 for Mavs...

Q2 7:36 Tied at 38
Grant Hill to shoot two after the commercial.  The Mavs are holding pace but Nash and Stoudemire are resting.  This game is gonna get opened up in the third quarter.

Q2 4:32 Suns up 48-44
Off a Steve Nash three pointer as the shot clock expired.  Diaw is playing well today, Shaq is one hell of a passer.

At the half Suns lead 57-52
Plenty to like about that half.  Stoudemire and Diaw have led the way, combining for 25 points.  The Suns have won the rebounding battle 23-17 and moved the ball better with 18 assists to the Mavericks 11.  Nowitzki has dropped 13 points so far but his injury seems to be affecting his play.  The biggest cause of concern is Josh Howard who's scored 15 including some very tough shots.  Finding time for Diaw and Giricek off the bench is the key in the second half.  All of our pieces are clicking this game.  No way the Mavericks can keep up if we play like this in the second half.

Q3 10:44 Suns up 61-52
Mavericks calling a timeout early to come up with an answer for Stoudemire.  Good luck.

Q3 7:57 Suns lead 68-56
Great plays in that stretch.  Hill chased down a jump ball with the shot clock expiring and hit a tough shot.  Bell had a great three pointer.  And the ever present Nash to Stoudemire MONSTER JAM.

Q3 3:38 Suns lead 80-72
Bench players should be in to relieve some starters.  Looking forward to seeing if Giricek keeps his shooting touch.

End of Third Suns on Top 89-78
One quarter left to win.  In a lot of ways Diaw has been the most impressive today.  And the Mavs are giving up offensive boards like us in a pre-Shaq bad effort.

Q4 8:33 Suns lead 91-81
Stagnant stretch on offense but the Mavs couldn't take advantage.  Couple of careless fouls back to back by Giricek, who's yet to shoot this half.  Oh well Nash and Stoudemire will be back to close the game out.

Q4 7:01 Suns lead cut to 91-87
Offensive woes continue.  Stoudemire please!

Q4 Dallas leads 92-91
I can't recall a worse scoring drought from Phoenix.  Combined with some noncalls and a bad call just now.  Time to play like champions.

shot chart, but no sharp shot
looking at the shot chart for the 4th quarter:
O'Neal makes one 10 feet jumper with 11.41 mn remaining in the fourth,
Amare makes one 0 feet jumper with 0.28 mn in the fourth
And between? Hum... That's all!
2 jumpers in one quarter? At home, at this point of the season, against a western pretender? That must be Jason Kidd controlling the paint...
I'm mad!!!

Good night everybody, and good luck for the recap, it won't be easy to find the bright side of the loss...

uh... go suns
