Once again the Phoenix Suns went down big. Once again the Suns staged an impressive comeback. And once again they wound up on the losing side of the ledger when time expired, falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves 121-116.
Down 99-79 with 1:11 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Suns went on a 30-9 run to take a 109-108 lead after Ronnie Price stripped Ricky Rubio at halfcourt for a dunk with 4:04 remaining. Mirza Teletovic (12 points), Devin Booker (8 points), and Price (hustle) led the comeback for the Suns. Unfortunately, Phoenix couldn't sustain the momentum, allowing the Wolves to go on a 9-3 run to go back up 117-112 with 1:43 left to play in the 4th quarter. Booker answered with a long 2-pointer of his own, and that was followed by each team going 1 of 2 from the free throw line to leave Phoenix trailing 118-115. Teletovic missed a game-tying 3-pointer, but Booker was fouled chasing the rebound. He missed the first attempt but hit the second, leaving the Suns to intentionally foul Tayshaun Prince with 8.5 seconds left. Prince made the first but missed the second to give the Suns an opportunity to tie on the following possession. Teletovic got a look at a 3-point shot from the corner but failed to replicate his magic from the last meeting between these two teams. Rubio secured the rebound and sank two free throws to seal the game.
Brandon Knight got the Suns off to a hot start offensively, scoring Phoenix's first 13 points and finishing the 1st half with 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. However, Knight cooled off in the 2nd half and finished the game with 30 points and a career-high-tying seven made 3-pointers.
Booker led the way in the 2nd half, scoring 18 of his 30 points after halftime. Teletovic was also solid, finishing with 19 points, and Price had 12 points and four steals as he took a majority of Knight's minutes while the Suns made their comeback. Alex Len finished with a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds) and played more within himself tonight.
For Minnesota, they were paced by Andrew Wiggins (32 points), who made 17 of his 21 free throw attempts. Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and 10 rebounds, with 22 of those points coming in the 1st half. Rubio finished the game with 17 points and 11 assists.
The T-Wolves paraded to the free throw line all game, shooting 32 of 40 from the charity stripe to Phoenix's 19 of 23. The Suns also committed 21 turnovers in the game.
