Northern Arizona Suns name Tyrone Ellis head coach

Ellis was an assistant with the Bakersfield Jam last season.

Tuesday morning Tyrone Ellis was named the first head coach for the Northern Arizona Suns of the NBA Development League.

Last season Ellis served as an assistant coach for Phoenix's former NBDL affiliate the Bakersfield Jam. 2015-16 was his fourth season coaching as an assistant in the D-League.

Ellis' playing career spanned 11 years, mostly in Spain. He went undrafted after graduating from NAIA Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma where he was named a First Team NAIA All-American as a senior for the 2000-01 season. He was a member of the Georgia national basketball team from 2006-2009.

The 38 year-old Ellis will be announced as the first coach in Northern Arizona Suns history as part of a special event being held at the Prescott Valley Event Center on Thursday. Doors will open at noon and the public is welcome to attend.
