Suns continue to shake-up coaching staff

Three G League coaches called up to big club

Sunday the Northern Arizona Suns, NBA G League affiliate of the Phoenix Suns announced that they had confirmed their coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. That plan didn’t last long.

Following the dismissal of head coach Earl Watson and assistants Nate Bjorkgren, Mehmet Okur, and Jason Fraser on Sunday, three coaches were promoted to the big leagues.

Ty Ellis, Bret Burchard, and Brandon Rosenthal have all assumed their new roles with the Phoenix Suns.

Ellis was head coach of the NAZ Suns for one season. Last year the Suns finished 22-28 after a 10-1 start, tied for the best 11-game start in G-League history. He coached players that earned NBA call-ups, including Derrick Jones Jr. and Elijah Millsap with the Suns and Johnny O’Bryant with the Charlotte Hornets.

Burchard was previously with Phoenix as a video coordinator from 2013-16. Last season was the first with Northern Arizona for Rosenthal. In 2015-16 he was member of basketball operations with the video department for the Houston Rockets.

With the recent promotions, Tyler Gatlin will run training camp in Northern Arizona.

The Phoenix Suns host the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. Tip is scheduled for 7pm PT. The Northern Arizona Suns kick off their 2017-18 season when they welcome the Agua Caliente Clippers Saturday, November 4th at 7pm PT.
