Devin Booker scored 34 points but got little help scoring from the rest of the team after T.J. Warren went down hard in the 1st quarter and did not return after scoring just 6 points. Josh Jackson (13) and Tyson Chandler (15) were the only other Suns to score in double figures as the Suns hit only 35.1% of their shots tonight.
The Knicks never cooled off, shooting 51.7% for the night. Kristaps Porzingis scored 37 while Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter added 21 and 16 respectively with three other Knicks also scoring in double figures.
Turnovers were not an issue as the Suns committed 10 as opposed to 12 for the Knicks. The Suns were just shooting cold and their defensive intensity seemed to come and go throughout the night. The Knicks also killed them in the paint.
With Warren out for the rest of the game and no other Sun stepping up to fill the role as a second scorer, it seems that this game was effectively over the moment that he collided with Kanter in the 1st quarter.
1st Quarter
Suns score first as Booker hits two free throws. Porzingis has already made his presence felt in the paint only two minutes into the game. Slow start. Knicks up 13-12 at 6:50. Booker and Warren have scored all of the Suns points so far with 6 of their 12 coming at the free throw line.
Suns shooting poorly so far but free throws are keeping them even with the Knicks. Chriss picks up foul #2 and Bender is the first sub off the bench. Knicks go on a 7-0 run to go up 22-15 before Warren gets another bucket. 22-17.
Warren goes down hard as he collides hard with Kanter on the way to the basket. Time out with Knicks up 28-17 at the 1:52 mark. Jackson in for Warren. Warren goes to the locker room.
Suns are not looking good tonight as New York is up 32-19 at the end of the quarter. Suns shot a horrid 18.5% from the field. Knicks hitting 60%. Booker has 11 of the Suns' 19.
2nd Quarter
The Knicks hot shooting continues. Jackson finally gets a bucket to make the score 40-21. The Suns are finally starting to look alive but NY can't seem to miss. Troy Daniels hits back to back threes! Suns are finally getting some defensive stops. Jackson hits a three! Chandler gets to the FT line and cuts the NY lead to 10. 9-0 run by the Suns, now 42-32.
Porzingas returns and the Knicks go on an 10-0 run of their own to push the lead up to 20. Suns defense is not there tonight.
Nice coast-to-coast and-1 for Booker! 56-39 Knicks.
Suns finally playing some D. Free throws are keeping the Suns from getting completely blown out right now. Suns down 65-50 at the end of quarter #2.
At the Half
Booker leads in scoring with 22 points on 55% shooting, no other Sun is in double figures. Porzingis has 20 for the Knicks, Hardaway and Kanter both with 12.
The Suns made only 28.8% of their field goals and shot 26.7% from three. 16 of their points came at the FT line on 16-17 shooting. Knicks shot 54.3% and 35.7% from three. Suns surprisingly only committed 4 turnovers in the half. They dug this hole for themselves with bad shooting and weak defense.
3rd Quarter
Booker gets a steal and a bucket to start the 3rd. Jackson in for Warren at the start. Suns playing hard and cut the lead to 6 at the 8:12 mark. Knicks timeout, score 72-66. 16-7 run by Suns.
Marquese Chriss picks up his 4th foul on Porzingis. Dragan Bender in, Chriss to the bench.
Booker picks up his 4th foul with 6:19 to go and heads to the bench. Knicks lead back up to 10. Now back up to 14. All second unit players on the court for the Suns now.
Hustle plays by the Suns cut the lead back to 7 but Knicks quickly push their lead back to 11. Lots of missed shots by the Suns.
3rd quarter ends with Knicks up 92-76.
4th Quarter
Suns come out with some energy to start the quarter. Booker and Chriss return but Chriss quickly fouls out. The Knicks are beating the Suns to death in the paint.
The Suns are starting to look beaten as Booker picks up his 5th foul and the Knicks push their lead back up to 15. Knicks lead 104-89 with 7:39 left to play.
Booker is trying to keep the Suns in it but can't do it all by himself without at least some defensive stops by the Suns.
This game is over.
Knicks win 120-107.
