Recap: Phoenix Suns win an ugly game 97-91 over Dallas Mavericks

A win is a win... even in an ugly game.

The Suns win their second game in a row without franchise player Devin Booker... but it wasn't really a fun game to watch.

T.J. Warren led the Suns with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Alex Len had another double-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds and chipped in 4 assists while he was at it. Isaiah Canaan had another good game with 17 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Harrison Barnes led the Mavericks with 26 points. Wesley Matthews and Yogi Ferrell had 13 each.

Although the Suns only shot 44.3% for the game, they got red hot in the fourth hitting on 64% of their field goals. Dallas went cold in the fourth and wound up shooting 36.4% for the game. The Suns bench once again carried the game scoring 55 points to the starters 42. The Suns out rebounded the Mavericks 49 to 42.

This was not an entertaining game. Both teams seemed flat and played sloppy ball for most of it. The Suns had 18 turnovers and Dallas 15. The Suns also had only 17 assists... one less than the amount of turnovers. They were lucky that the Mavericks also played badly tonight.

The Good: The Suns won.

The Bad: Almost everything else.

1st Quarter

Suns win the tip but Dallas scores first with a three.

Several misses by both teams until Chandler dunks.

Jackson steals and dunks on the fast break.

Lots of missed shots early by both teams.

Tyson Chandler hits a rare jumper. Warren steals on the other end and dunks on the break.

Dallas up 10-8 at 7:15.

Chriss ties it at 10-10.

Both teams shooting badly to start. Suns 35.7%, Dallas 33.3%.

12-12 at 4:44 as most of Suns' bench enter the game, Warren is the only starter on the court.

Dallas goes up 19-15 and Triano calls time at 2:40.

Canaan scores a layup and Mavs miss on the other end.

Canaan drives and draws the foul. Hits 1 of 2 but Len tips the miss in to put the Suns up by 1.

Danuel House drives, scores and gets the and-one. Suns up by four, 23-19.

Len dunks, lead now at six.

Barea hits a three at the end of the quarter to cut the Suns lead by half.

The quarter ends with the Suns ahead 25-22.

Both teams shot under 40% in the quarter.

2nd Quarter

Mavs score two quick buckets to take the lead but Len scores to take it back.

Troy Daniels hits another three and the Suns are up 30-26 at 9:34.

Canaan hits a three and the lead is up to seven!

The Suns' bench has scored 21 of the Suns' 33 points.

This hasn't been a pretty game to watch but a Suns lead is still a Suns lead.

Daniels goes down after getting elbowed in the face by Devin Harris. Taken to the bench and then to the locker room.

8:12 left to play in the 2nd quarter. Josh Jackson replaces Daniels.

Dallas ties the game at 5:10, 37-37.

A really sloppy game by both teams so far.

Kleber dunks for Dallas and they lead 39-37. Suns call time at 4:06.

Both teams still shooting under 40% from the field.

Warren ties it after the TO.

Warren gets fouled and hits 1-2 and Suns go up 40-39.

Tyler Ulis is fouled and hits both. Suns up 42-39.

Several bad offensive possessions by the Suns' starters, taking bad shots and missing.

Mavs are now up by 4 after a 7-0 run. The run ends with a Jackson dunk.

Ulis his a three and Dallas scores on the other end.

Warren scores before the buzzer and cuts the Dallas lead to one.

Dallas 50, Suns 49 at the end of the 2nd quarter.

At the Half

The Suns hit only 37.5% of their shots in the first half and 28.6% from three. Dallas warmed up to 43.2% overall and 46.2% from three. The Suns have made only 4 turnovers in this game so far as opposed to Dallas' 8. Rebound are about even with the Suns grabbing 25 to Dallas' 28.

Alex Len leads the Suns in scoring with 8, Ulis and Warren have 7 each. Harrison Barnes leads the Mavericks with 16 points and Ferrell has 11.

All in all, a sloppy half by both teams with numerous lead changes and lots of missed shots. 20 fast break points for the Suns.

3rd Quarter

Daniels is okay and will play in the second half!

More sloppy play to start the quarter. Teams are mostly trading missed shots but Dallas hits more than the Suns as they go up 57-51 at 9:08. Time out Suns.

Warren is now in double figures with 11 points.

The Suns start quarter with 5 turnovers and a ton of missed shots. Marquese Chriss gets his 4th foul and Warren picks up his 4th a few seconds later. Both go to the bench.

Dallas is starting to pull ahead, now up by 12 , 71-59 at 3:20. Dallas has out scored the Suns 21 to 10 so far in this quarter.

Sloppy passing by the Suns, now up to 11 turnovers.

The Suns show a few signs of life and cut Dallas' lead to 73-68.

The quarter ends with Dallas up 75-68.

Both teams have shot 40.6% from the field so far. Suns are now 35% from three and Dallas is at 36%. The main difference has been free throws so far with Dallas hitting 14 of 15 and the Suns going 9-12 from the charity stripe.

4th Quarter

Suns cut the lead to 75-70 on a tough shot by Canaan.

More sloppy play and another Suns turnover. The Suns commit their 4th team foul at 9:25. Daniels commits his 5th and the teams 5th foul at 9:18.

Mike James come in for Daniels. Canaan and James are the Suns backcourt now.

Suns cut the lead to 3. And Canaan ties it 79-79 with a three after a Dallas miss.

Dallas has gone cold again and is down to 38.6% shooting while the Suns are finally over 40% at 41.4%.

Another miss by Dallas and Len goes to the line after Nowitzki fouls him. He hits both and the Suns go up 81-79 after a 9-0 run.

The bench is again keeping the Suns in a game. The bench has scored 48 of the Suns 81 points so far.

Suns now up 83-81 as Dallas ends the 11-0 run but James hits a quick three and the Suns' lead is now 86-81.

3:54 left to play as Triano takes a timeout.

Bender with a three! Now 89-81 Suns.

Dallas cuts the lead down to 5. Now 91-86.

Now 91-88 at 1:49.

Suns turnover at 1:35. Suns now with 17 TOs for the game.

Warren with a block and Canaan scores on the other end. 93-88 Suns with 1:02 left to play.

Dallas hits a three then some wild play on the inbounds that ended with a foul on Warren with 12.4 seconds to go and the Suns up 93-91.

Non-shooting foul and Warren gets fouled again on the inbounds. Warren misses the first but hits the second as Dallas calls time. Suns lead 94-91 with 11.4 seconds to go.

Dallas misses, Suns get the rebound and Dallas fouls with 6.6 to go. Warren at the line again and hits both.

Warren intercepts the Dallas inbounds pass, gets fouled yet again and will go back to the line with the Suns up 96-91.

Warren hits one and the Suns win 97-91.
