Talks between San Antonio and Phoenix involved a sign-and-trade with Simmons, with veteran Tyson Chandler headed back to the Spurs. The two years and $26 million Chandler is still owed was enough to scare off San Antonio at the 11th hour.
Late Wednesday night, Simmons’ people asked San Antonio to renounce his rights, making him an unrestricted free agent. Thursday morning that request was granted.
