Quick Recap: Suns defeat Grizzlies on the road 114-105 and improve record to 4-2

This team is for real.

After an up and down first half that left the Suns trailing 47-45 at the midpoint, they brought their A-game in the third quarter with a 37-22 run to take the wind out of the Grizzlies.

Devin Booker lead the Suns with 21 points with Aron Baynes adding 20 while hitting 4 of 7 three point attempts. Kelly Oubre Jr., Frank Kaminsky, Ricky Rubio and Mikal Bridges all also scored in double figures for the Suns.

Ja Morant led Memphis with 24 points with Dillon Brooks and Brandon Clarke chipping in 16 each.

The Grizzlies wound up out rebounding the Suns badly (46-32) but the Suns out shot them from the field, from three and from the free throw line to secure their 4th victory of the season.

1st Quarter

The tip off goes to the Grizzlies but Booker puts the Suns on the board first.

Slow start with several missed shots by both teams. Tied 7-7 at 8:20. Memphis goes up 2 as Suns call time. Neither team is looking very sharp early.

Rubio with a nifty drive to a circus score and a chance at an and-one! He misses but the Suns get the ball back and Kaminsky puts the Suns up by 2.

The pace is picking up as is the scoring. Frank gets an and-one and the Suns are up 18-13 at the 4:57 mark.

Rubio draws a charge to get the ball back for the Suns. Booker with a fast break slam! Suns up 20-13. Memphis answers with a two and then the Suns turn it over... but the Griz turn it over themselves.

Booker from loooong range! Suns up 23-15! Time out Griz with 2:40 left in the 1st.

Kaminsky now has 7 point in the 1st. Suns foul on the other end and the Griz get two freebies to make it 25-19 Suns on top.

All bench players on the court for the Suns now. Memphis on a 7-2 run until Tyler Johnson hits a trey!

Frank with another score and a chance for another and-one... it’s in and the quarter ends with the Suns up 31-24.

Kaminsky leads the Suns with 10 and Booker has 9.

2nd Quarter

Good D by the Suns but Memphis scores first in the quarter. Baynes answers.

Memphis isn’t shooting well and the Suns are grabbing the rebounds. 35-26 Suns up at 9:00.

Suns call time after the Griz get an easy 2 on a fast break. 42-34 Suns up with 5:30 to go. Giz just 1 of 8 from three. Suns are 3 of 12.

Brooks hits a trey and cuts the Suns’ lead to 5. Suns miss, Griz don’t and the lead is down to 3. Suns have missed 7 of their last 8 shots.

Turnover Suns. Thankfully Jae Crowder misses a trey that would have tied the game. A tech is called on Oubre but Memphis misses at the line.

Memphis gets the ball back but misses... and the Suns turn it over again on an offensive foul on Booker. Very sloppy play by the Suns and they go to the half down 47-45.

At the Half

Not a good shooting half for the Suns (45.2% FG, 21.4% 3pt) but thankfully not a great shooting night for the Griz either (41.3% FG, 25% 3pt).

Kaminsky leads the Suns with 11 and Booker has 9 but they combined for only ONE point in the second quarter. Brandon Clarke leads the Grizzlies with 8 and Jackson has 7.

Suns were out rebounding the Griz early but wound up behind 24-20 at the half. Suns have also committed 12 turnovers to 8 for Memphis.

Neither team is shooting free throws well tonight as both are under 60% from the line.

3rd Quarter

Baynes with a three to get back the lead! Brooks answers with a three of his own. Memphis up 50-48.

Another Suns turnover but the Suns get it back as the Griz turn it over on an offensive foul. Dillon Brooks just picked up his 4th foul and sits. Booker hits a trey and the Suns take the lead again.

Book hits a two and the Suns are up 55-52. 8:36 to play in the quarter, timeout Memphis.

Oubre with a jam! Morant answers with a trey... and Rubio returns the favor on the other side. 60-55 Suns lead.

Baynes misses a three but makes up for it with a block on the other end that leads to Saric getting two on a fast break! Suns lead 62-55. Suns outscoring the Griz 17 to 8 to start the 3rd.

Book with another looong three! Suns get the ball back and Oubre scores. 67-55 Suns.

Memphis gets two quick scores to cut the lead to 67-59. Valanciunas gets a tech foul on Baynes who makes the free throw and the Suns get the ball.

Jackson Jr. picks up his 4th foul and leaves the court hobbling. Booker hits two free throws and the Suns are up 70-59.

Oubre for 3! Suns up by 14 with 3:50 to go in the quarter.

Suns with active hands this quarter. Several near-miss steals but still disrupt Memphis’ play.

Sloppy plays by both team lead to turnovers but Griz finally score on a fast break to cut the Suns lead to 75-65. Phoenix calls time.

All of Phoenix’s starters are on the bench again but the subs close out the 3rd with an 82-69 lead after the Suns score 37 points in the quarter.

4th Quarter

Trading baskets early in the 4th. Suns up 87-75.

Baynes for another three! Griz answer with a two. T. Johnson with another trey! Suns up 93-77.

Suns’ 3pt shooting is up to 41.4%.

The Grizzlies are chipping away at the lead. Now 95-85 Suns.

Baynes now has 17. 97-85 Suns lead with 6:30 to play.

Take it to the bank Baynes! 100-89 Suns.

Memphis going small.

Book with a tough 2 as the shot clock winds down! Suns up 11 with 2:43 to go.

Griz cut the lead to 107- 99 with 1:47 to go.

All of the Suns’ starters are back on the court and... Saric with a three!

112-101 with 26.1 seconds to go.

This game is over.

Suns win by 9, 114-105!
