Here’s what the Phoenix Suns have to do for a shot at the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft

Lose.

NBA: Washington Wizards at Phoenix Suns Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Greetings, fellow Phoenix Suns fan. Have you checked out of this season? It’s ok if you did. I did. But now is probably a good time to catch up on what has, for the last few seasons, been the most exciting time for our team. The offseason is right around the corner.

Now, it probably won’t surprise your that your Suns have a chance to land the top pick in this summer’s NBA Draft. Just like last season. And the one before that. And the one before that.

But the game has changed, friends. No longer is the worst team in the NBA alone with the best odds of landing the number one overall pick. Instead the bottom three teams in the league will have identical odds for the ping pong balls to fall their way, giving them the chance to draft Zion Williamson or whoever is this year’s Anthony Bennett.

If our team is fortunate enough to have one of the worst three records in the league, we’ll have a 14% chance of drafting first.

But we can still blow it.

The Knicks are the worst team in the NBA and locked in to one of the three premiere spots. The Suns (18-60), Cavs (19-59), and Bulls (21-57), still have work to do.

Each team has four games remaining. A Bulls win or Suns loss will lock in a bottom-three record in the league for Phoenix. Of the three teams still vying for a spot, Cleveland has the most attractive path, with road matchups against Sacramento and Golden State and home dates with Charlotte and San Antonio.

Chicago gets Washington on the road, New York at home, and Philly twice. Phoenix closes out with Utah and New Orleans at home before Houston and Dallas on the road.

A random drawing will break all ties. Don’t worry though. Phoenix is a combined 3-8 against the teams remaining on its schedule. They have the Jazz on Wednesday, and just last week Utah thumped the Suns by 32. So how about Devin Booker goes for 50 one more time and we take the drama out of locked up a bottom three spot?

The 2019 NBA Draft Lottery is on Tuesday, May 14th in Chicago. The 2019 NBA Draft will be held June 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
