The Phoenix Suns unveiled their alternate jersey yesterday to a lot of immediate consternation from the fans.
Just like most jersey reveals, fans don’t initially love them. This one may never turn the tide, but seeing it worn by the players on a court might change a bit of perception. We won’t know until that happens, of course.
Let’s forget for a moment that the Suns have, at least for the moment, killed off the BLACK alternate jerseys in favor of another round of orange. I love the black. I love the white. I love the purple. I don’t love orange and never will.
But in the context of ugly orange being the worst choice for a jersey, are these new ones at least the best of the worst?
The Suns are trying to link these jerseys to the glory days of the SSOL Suns because of, I guess, the color orange.
Here’s the new jersey next to Steve Nash in the SSOL version.
On one hand, I like the bright orange better than burnt orange. And I like the purple trim better than gray trim.
But on the other hand, I like EVERYTHING else about the SSOL orange jerseys. If they really wanted to pay homage the SSOL jerseys, couldn’t they have used that blueprint and just used the better coloring with it?
Here’s the orange of the Horny days in recent years. At least I like this new jersey better than these awful sleeved ones.
I hated those orange jerseys from the Horny/Dragic days of recent seasons. And I’m so glad they disappeared recently.
So, I will vote that the new orange jerseys are better than the Horny orange.
Per the press release: During each of the Suns’ eight Friday home games, Orange Fridays will come to life through a number of fan-friendly in-arena activations accentuated by the team wearing the Orange Statement Edition uniforms. Every Orange Friday will feature a special performing act as part of the Suns Music Series, an exclusive player intro video, limited-time concessions specials, Suns Team Shop discounts, orange signage and lighting throughout Talking Stick Resort Arena and much more.
The Suns will wear the new bright orange jerseys at the following home games this year, calling them Orange Fridays.
- Nov. 29 vs. Dallas
- Jan. 3 vs. New York
- Jan. 10 vs. Orlando
- Jan. 31 vs. Oklahoma City
- Feb. 7 vs. Houston
- Feb. 28 vs. Detroit
- March 6 vs. Portland
- April 3 vs. Cleveland
At least there’s only eight of them.
