Which would you add to the Phoenix Suns: Fred VanVleet or Davis Bertans?

Let’s do a quickie Sunday poll on this here blog. Let’s assume the Phoenix Suns sign one major free agent for their rotation this offseason.

What do you think the Suns need the most?

Davis Bertans

This young man is a great great long range shooter but does little else. He did hold down a rotation spot for the playoff-level Spurs a couple of years ago, but they traded him for cap space last off-season to Washington where he shined... on the league’s best offense but worst defense.

He’s tall and rangy, like Cameron Johnson, but does not have the developing secondary skills that Cam does. For the 2019-20 season, Bertans stats compare very closely to Cam’s.

Holy crap, though: he can shoot.

James Jones says consistently that he loves smart players with at least one really good skill. That’s Davis. Bertans is an un-restricted free agent this off season, and will command some of the biggest money on the market.

His fit on the Suns: The 27-year old Bertans would play in the forward rotation with Kelly Oubre Jr., Cameron Johnson and Mikal Bridges, while also spelling Booker at times.

Fred VanVleet

Suns fans have coveted FVV for years, and now the guard is a full unrestricted free agent again. Will the Suns pay up?

FVV is a great top-3 guard on a playoff team, and probable starter the rest of his career. Either in Toronto or somewhere else. He can do everything you want on the court, with the small exception that he doesn’t have the vision of a Rubio in setting up the offense.

Unfortunately, FVV would take up every last bit of any cap space the Suns could muster, so you’d better really really really want him in Phoenix in a rotation with Ricky and Booker.

Here are his career stats.

And now here are highlights.

Fit on the Suns: The 25-year old Fred would fit right into a three-guard rotation with Booker and Rubio, and then eventually take over the starting spot from Rubio for good. That would also make the Booker/FVV back court one of the highest paid guard pairings in the league.
