Suns Vs Kings Game Notes

  • Book wide open 3 to start the game off broken D

  • It's less than 2 minutes into the game, but the Kings don't look good

  • Run the pnr for Mikal, get a lob for DA

  • Cp gets a lob to Ayton now

  • CP misses an easy layup, refs bail him out lol

  • Book collapses the Kings D, open 3 to Mikal in the corner

  • Book is working the Kings so far

  • Suns aren't exactly killing it on D though, Kings have gotten pretty good looks

  • Ayton is rolling to basket well so far

  • Mikal is certainly playing with a higher level of confidence in his own shot, 4 games in I feel safe saying it's not a mirage. We'll see by the end of the season

  • Mean block by Jae on Holmes, might not have been here long but I wish Holmes well in his career

  • Suns playing decent, only up 4

  • Kings guards/wings shooting well

  • Mikal with another midrange shot

  • A lot of sets for Mikal so far

  • Ayton free throw jumper, offense running through Book, Mikal and Ayton... Book jumper out of broken offense

  • I could be wrong but I think people don't realize Ayton is involved with like 80% of offensive action while he's on the floor even if he doesn't finish the plays.

  • Payton gums up the works

  • Tough finish by Alex Len on McGee

  • I like how many minutes Ayton got in the 1st quarter

  • Kings are not playing good offense, most of their offense is from the Suns not playing too seriously

At the end of the first, meh, the suns could be better lead by six 29-23

  • Suns open the 2nd with "good" defense and get a 3

  • I don't love Cam's shot off motion

  • McGee certainly plays flashier than Ayton but that's never been sustainable for him in extended minutes

  • Suns have very casually extended the lead to 11

  • Kings not shooting well, 5 turnovers at the 9 minute mark in the 2nd

  • Nader with a particularly good closeout from FAR away after his own blown layup

  • Ayton another jumper, this time at the elbow

  • Len with a 3, his 2nd ever as a king lol

  • Suns playing loose, Kings cut the lead to 4, Haliburton layup and that Len 3. Kings getting out in transition, nice stretch for them, prompt timeout, Booker comes back

  • Book creates a lob for Ayton, Payton gets open floater

  • Both were created by Ayton

  • Suns leave Haliburton wide open and he missed it, luck

  • Ayton cleans up a Booker take to the basket

  • Suns controlling the paint

  • Booker looks really good tonight, unfazed by any Kings defender

  • Ayton draws 4 Kings to the paint, passes out to the 3 point line, Book makes the extra pass to a wide open Mikal, who happens to miss but Payton with a very nice putback dunk. 7.5/10 slam Suns push lead back to 11

  • Elfrid Payton gets a vet call against Davion Mitchell

  • Ayton is playing really well so far tonight double double already, 16 and 10

  • Suns are not playing amazing defense, kings staying within 10 for the most part

  • Ayton has stopped a lot of elbow/free throw jumpers for the kings

  • Book and Ayton look the best they've looked so far this year, in all 4 games

  • Suns killing it in the paint, getting all types of penetration, 14 assists in the half

At the half the Suns lead by 8, I suppose they could be playing better but they've maintained control throughout the game. The Kings keep making pushes to get into the game, getting as close as 4. Everytime they do though, The Suns have been able to extend the lead back to around 10, but no higher than 12. I'm not sure the Suns think the Kings can beat them, so far the Kings are playing like that's accurate. The Suns effort isn't too bad in all honesty, it's also not playoff level either, but it might be enough for this game. (it wasn't)

  • Kings 3 buckets to start the 3rd, 6-0 run, lead down to 2

  • Booker 2 bad 3s, Mikal an unforced turnover. Good effort from the kings in the 3rd

  • Ayton steps out of bounds on a d rebound, long series of misfortune for the Suns

  • Lid on the rim for the suns, 8 unanswered for the Kings. Though that last 2 took a bit after the initial 6. Forces Suns to call timeout.

  • Suns unable to capitalize on decent shot attempts, they definitely got flustered after a few questionable no calls

  • Mikal gets a bucket out of the timeout

  • 8 turnovers for the game

  • Suns definitely look better after that timeout.

  • Kings are playing much harder in the 3rd

  • Kings take the lead after the Suns go up 4. Suns answer, then hield gets another 3.

  • Kings have definitely owned this quarter

  • CP3 is 1 for 8 on the game

  • Buddy Hield three 3s in the quarter, Suns not shooting great this quarter, even Cam missed an open 3. Kings lead by 2, Outscoring the suns by 10 in the quarter, Kings shoot free throws. Make them

  • Another buddy hield 3, 8-0 run by the Kings, Book stops the bleeding

  • Some of it has been on broken offense, but the Kings have owned this quarter, lead by 6

Jeez. The Suns were outscored in the 3rd by 14, I'd say it was equally bad offense and defense, they could not secure loose balls in the half court and the Kings capitalized on nearly all of them. Kings lead 82-76.

  • CP3 has not played well this game

  • Suns just trading baskets, that's not going to help if you're down. Outscored by 2 in the first two minutes of the 4th

  • CP used rip through to get Suns into the bonus, finally cutting into the lead, annnnnd open 3 right after for the Kings

  • Another 3 from Hield, 7 for the game

  • Kings are playing even harder in the 4th

  • Suns cut it to 4, and 6 unanswered from the Kings right after. Lead by 10, 92-82

  • Suns cannot get it going on offense or defense. A lot of empty possessions

  • Len hits another 3 to put them up 12, not funny this time.

  • Suns can't buy a bucket, get a 3 taken away on a ticky tack foul, 2 free threes for Ayton instead. Makes both, 10 point game

  • Rebounds really going Kings way, mostly off missed 3s, lots of 2nd chance points in the second half

  • Ayton and book have missed a free throw

  • CP3 playing badly and Payne being out probably have something to do with the lack of offense in the 2nd half, but better defense probably keeps this from happening. The Suns have been outscored by 18 in the second half, half way through the 4th. Suns have only scored 27 in the 2nd half at the 6 minute mark of the 4th.

  • The Kings have made maybe 5 well covered 3s in this half, tough. That's not the whole difference though

  • Suns have not been able to get it going on offense, missing three open 3s

  • A lot of things are going the Kings way, but that comes with effort, and the Kings are going hard out there

  • Suns still trading baskets

  • Kings have shot amazing from 3 after a slow start in the first half I haven't counted but at least 10 in the 2nd half

  • Jae 3 and Book free throws close it to 5. Book "fancy" dribbling gets a bucket, he might have double dribbled, Kings answer right back still 5 point lead

  • Another Jae 3 closes it to 2, unforced turnover by the Kings, Suns run out on 2 man fast break tie the game.

  • Wow what a last 5 minutes, from about 5:30 to 00:30 the Suns claw back all ten points they were behind, suns really pushed the pace to get open 3s.

  • Suns play tough D to stop the Kings from taking the lead, but cannot get good offense on the other side, Book takes hero ball long 2. Kings get rebound with 3.7 left at the end of the game. Final possession for the game.

  • Suns use last foul to give to take 2 seconds off the clock

  • Harrison Barnes makes a tough 3 at the buzzer to win the game.

Tough tough loss on a buzzer beater, but the Suns should have never found themselves in this position, a middling effort in the first half, followed by a terrible second half got the Suns into this position. While they showed some grit to come all the way back, they were outright terrible in the second half even taking that into account. This game can certainly be taken as a microcosm of the Suns' first 4 games of the season. A hugely varying level of effort has been what the Suns have shown so far. When they have given intense effort they can outscore anybody, they can stop any offense, but when they don't give that effort the Suns have looked mediocre, at best. In this game the Suns really only played well for a 6 minute stretch at the end of the 4th, and sure, with maybe a little more luck they might have won, but mediocrity in the other 42 let them down. Outside of this game, the only time the Suns have really gotten up for a game was for the Lakers, and that game showed what they can be when they come out and play seriously. Their three other games have been more like how they played in this game against the Kings, tough, but maddeningly inconsistent. It's certainly not time for the panic button, and better play out of the point guard position is what we really lacked in this particular game, but for the 3rd time the Suns have lost on effort. And while I think that is something they can rectify, it's disheartening to start the season this way. On to the next one, I'm not going to carry this loss into the future and I doubt the Suns will either, but it definitely hurts me, and I can't imagine the team feels much better than that.
