Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver fined US$10m and given year suspension over workplace misconduct

The NBA launched an investigation into Sarver, who also owns of Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) Phoenix Mercury, after ESPN published a report in November 2021 alleging that during his 18-year tenure the real estate businessman regularly used racist language and displayed misogynistic behaviour. The Watchell Lipton law firm was hired to lead a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, resulting in the one-year suspension for Sarver and the maximum fine permitted by the NBA’s bylaws. During the investigation, the NBA collated information from 320 individuals, including past and present Suns employees. The league says it analysed more than 80,000 documents, including emails, text messages and videos.
