The Phoenix Suns got back in the win column on Wednesday night in Houston. It was the Eric Gordon revenge game and a career night for Kevin Durant. They were not “checked out” for this one, that’s for sure.
Tonight’s performance was a much-needed injection of energy, pace, and laser focus that we haven’t seen from this Suns team in the past month.
Kevin Durant and Eric Gordon combined for 54 points on 31 shot attempts. Booker and Durant tallied 23 assists to 7 turnovers. The team shot 42.4% from deep on 32 attempts.
They lost the turnover battle but outrebounded Houston by 11 to make up for it.
Phoenix opened up the game a bit slow, going back and forth with Houston for several minutes.
At the five-minute mark, they started to create some separation to give them a 30-24 lead after the first 12 minutes of action. Houston closed the final quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to six heading into the 2nd quarter.
The ball was zipping around and the pace was where it needed to be against an opponent on the second night of a back-to-back. The ball movement led to several easy buckets that were generated from the attention that Phoenix’s two superstars drew, as stated in the preview as a key for tonight’s game.
Kevin Durant finished the first half with 10 assists (a career-high in a half) and zero turnovers. Point Durant was running the show early and often.
Phoenix led 73-55 at the half, led by 21 points from Eric Gordon.
In the second half, the Rockets showed some fight and wouldn’t flame out entirely, but Phoenix was in control of the game throughout.
After Phoenix outscored the Rockets by 12 in the second quarter, they added another two-point cushion in the third.
Their refusal to take their foot off the gas pedal despite a feisty effort from the Rockets in the third is what ultimately set them up for victory. Udoka Azubuike had an impressive performance backing up Nurkic, posting 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 19 minutes on 5-7 FG.
Grayson Allen also had a sneaky good game tallying 16 points on just 7 shot attempts.
Houston outscored the Suns by four in the 4th quarter, but the game was in the bag by the time they cut into the lead.
It was the Eric Gordon revenge game. The season-high 27 points from their veteran sniper was a welcome sight.

TRIPLE DOUBLE ALERT.
Kevin Durant answered the critics and then some. He finished the night with 27 points, 16 assists, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block in 41 minutes on 9-16 shooting.
