You may remember Ish Wainright, who came into this season as one of the longest-tenured members of the Phoenix Suns. You know? Baylor University tight end? I’m sure you recall.

Wainright was waived by the Suns before the season as they trimmed down the roster to meet NBA requirements, and he ended up signing with a team that had two of his former teammates in Deandre Ayton and Toumani Camara. The Portland Trail Blazers’ scouting team must’ve loved the Suns’ roster last season.

Unfortunately for Wainright, however, he suffered an MCL sprain in November after playing in just two games for Portland. The injury cost him 15 games.

He returned to action on December 23, but didn’t break the ten-plus-minutes played marked until his game against his former team on January 1, a game in which his 8 points in 12 minutes were moot in a 109-88 win for the Suns.

After 9 points on 3-of-5 shooting against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, the Blazers have decided to move on from Ish.

His final stat total in Portland? 7 games, 2.9 points on 33.3/37.5/100 splits, 1.3 rebounds, and 0 assists.

He joins a list of players who were on the Phoenix Suns roster last season who are not this year. T.J. Warren, Terrence Ross, and Darius Bazley are all without teams as well, with Ross recently announcing his retirement.

Before you grab your paint, posterboard, and wood to make picket signs that say “Bring Ish Home”, know that he still calls Pheonix home. “Phoenix is home,” Wainright said. “I’m not gonna be like, ‘Oh, this is not home.’ No. Phoenix is home. My mom loves it here, my lady lives here, my family’s here too.”

That being said, the Suns don’t have space nor a need for Wainright to return to the Suns. While some players have played themselves out of the rotation, that does not mean that they cannot play themselves back into it. I’d rather take our time with Yuta Watanabe.

Ish will be someone we always root for from afar and hopefully, he will find himself on a new team.
