Marcin Gortat is a big deal in his home country of Poland. He recently created a minor dust up after expressing some rather candid views of his current home team, the Phoenix Suns. Here's a transcription of his latest interview with the Polish media in which he's a bit more reserved in his comments.

Poor Marcin. He's not getting the touches and looks that he wants. He's getting benched in favor of Jermaine O'Neal and he's not happy about anything right now including his own level of play.

At least in this interview he focuses a bit more on himself but he's also clearly been instructed to watch his mouth which was also evident after Sunday's loss to the Magic when he dropped a "no comment, next question" when our own David King tried to ask him how he felt about the rotations and minutes he was getting.

Here's an idea, Marcin: man the f%ck up.

We know how you are when things are going well. Show us what kind of leader you can be when things aren't going your way. Play hard on every possession regardless of how many times your number gets called and good things will happen, fans and coaches will respect you more, and just maybe your team might win a game.

The following transcription comes to us from Adam Kościelak from the blog, The Gothic Ginobili. You can follow Adam on Twitter at: @AdamKoscielak.

Here's the interview as transcribed by Adam (thanks, Adam!):

Przeglad Sportowy's Marcin Harasimowicz is at it again, interviewing Marcin Gortat and letting him voice another batch of concerns.

Here's the interview, from after the Clippers game on Saturday. (link to the original: http://nba.przegladsportowy.pl/Koszykowka-Marcin-Gortat-a-NBA-Marcin-Gortat-a-Phoenix-Suns,artykul,153517,1,299.html)

Przegląd Sportowy: The Suns are in a tough spot, something that coach Alvin Gentry also talked about. You lost six games in a row.

Marcin Gortat: That's true. 6 losses and it doesn't seem like we're going to break this streak in the next game. This is a tough moment, not only for the team, but also for myself, for my career. I'm going through tough moments. It's situations like these where you have to show mental strength and think about what we can change. I need to train hard every day and hope for the best.

How would you explain the teams streaky play this season? For three quarters you were neck in neck with a top-notch team in the NBA, the Clippers, only to waste it in three or four minutes.

MG: Unfortunately, there are some "black holes" in our games that are hard to logically explain. There are moments in which it feels like somebody turned off the power. As if someone pulled the plug. We compete, we fight, we try, and then suddenly they go up a dozen points and we either mount a comeback, or it's too late.

Coach Gentry admitted that he's still looking for an optimal lineup, and he himself doesn't quite know how to use certain players. Your team is really going through a lot of changes all the time. Is Gentry looking for a perfect balance?*

MG: Maybe, I can't really say anything about that.

In some games you score a lot of points, for example 22 against the Trail Blazers and 18 against the Knicks, but you also have games like the one in Staples Center against the Clippers. Why?

MG: It's mostly because various players play different roles and have different playing time in every game. The team isn't crystallized. It doesn't have everyone knowing his role. Nobody's really sure how many minutes he'll spend on the court, whether he even gets a shot. We're still at the point of finding our strong suits.

How can you correct this?

MG: First and foremost - by practice. We can talk about how much (shots? playing time? t/n), and what we want in the locker room before and after games, but it isn't working so far. Only hard work in practice will let us eliminate our mistakes and fix our play.

You mentioned that you are going through some hard times? How do you plan on breaking through this crisis?

MG: Talking to the people that are close to me, that helped me built my career, or were close to me when I was growing as a basketball player. I'm capable of showing a high level. I have no other choice, but to look for a place to me in the team and fight for what's mine. It's really hard this season, though. This is an important mental test for me. I need to stay strong and focus on basketball. I can't be discouraged by things that happen in my team. It's not easy. This is the first time I'm in a situation like this in my career. Physically, I feel well. Maybe my aggressiveness has faded, but you know why? Because in one game, I play well, and in the next, I don't, while in the third one, I don't play at all, and in the fourth, I'm suddenly getting a bunch of passes. There's no consistency. I think that might be affecting me.

In the game against the Trail Blazers, you've shown that you can play a big role in the Suns offence.

MG: First of all, I believe I'm a good basketball player. I showed and confirmed that many times already. I don't need to argue with anyone about it, or repeat it ad nauseam. I know my worth. I believe in myself, but at the same time, I'm waiting for a chance. I don't give up, if I did, I wouldn't be myself.

*Please note that the first part of this question is formatted into Gortat's answer in the Polish version, but is, in fact a part of the question (note the "your team" line)

The highly knowledgable Randy Hill from Fox Sports Arizona shares his thoughts on the Gortat comments and how they relate to the overall Suns offense. We also have quotes from Marcin's first interview with local media since his comments went public.

Randy Hill is a guy who covers the Suns on a daily basis and on pure basketball knowledge is THE most technically insightful source of information on the team. The guy is a legit basketball coach/scout who both knows this team and the game of basketball.

Here's what Randy has to say.

Fox Sports Arizona
It also should be noted the Suns' recent shift away from a heavy dose of the Corner-series offense probably has quite a bit to do with Gortat's inability to function within its parameters. Because the system has two post players operating near each elbow, newcomer Luis Scola – a more accomplished passer – was supposed to spend considerable time on the strong side of the formation. But Gortat sort of whined his way off the weak side, where an enterprising offensive player could use deft maneuvering in the off-ball, two-man game to create shot opportunities.

There's more there. You should read it.

Kyndra de St. Aubin of Arizona Sports 620 is the first reporter to talk to Marcin since his comments. Read her full story.

"Hopefully with the season and with the next few games, things are going to change."

Alvin has already said he doesn't see things changing in regards to how Marcin will be used. So...

Marcin Gortat laid it all out there to a Polish reporter last Friday night. Was he right?

Phoenix Suns C Marcin Gortat said a lot of things the other day, while Alvin Gentry responded by saying he was glad he did before going to say that nothing was going to change.

Players and coaches alike get frustrated when a team is going through a losing streak, and it's quite easy to spout off immediately after one of those losses. So I'm not going to put a lot of stock in this craziness as anything bigger than a way to kill a couple days till the next game.

But before this blow over completely (or blow's up), let's break down exactly what Marcin said and CHECK THE FACTS.

MG: ...when the ball sticks to one person on offence, it's hard to find a good rhythm.

Is the ball sticking to one person more than last season, or is the ball just not going to Marcin as much? Or maybe a little of both?

Assists per game:

The top ballhandler (Nash vs. Dragic) has 3.4 fewer assists per game, and the team as a whole is down 1.5 assists per game. Yet, it appears from these raw numbers that more players and passing this year than last in every case beyond the starting point guard.

So what of the black hole comment?

Was he talking about Michael Beasley? Beasley's usage rate is high (25.3) and his shot attempts per game are high as well (14.8), but his assist rate is double his career average so at least he is trying a little bit.

Or was he talking about Goran Dragic, who we all know is more interested in scoring than his predecessor? Dragic's usage rate is 21.9, nearly identical to his entire career AND lower than Nash's, while his assist rate is at a career high.

I don't really know, other than that Marcin Gortat is no longer the number one scoring option on the Suns when he takes the floor. And when you're being relatively ignored, you feel the ball is "sticking" because it's not coming down low.

MG: [Gentry] also said he wanted me to set up in the paint and wait for my shots. And I'm still waiting...

Across the board, his numbers are down as you can see in the chart above. Fewer attempts, lower shooting percentage, higher rate of getting his shot blocked and fewer easy finishes.

Why are all his numbers down, when a higher percentage of them are being taken from the inside (ie. less than 10 feet away from the basket) where shooting percentages generally rise?

A look at mysynergysports.com statistics tells some of the story. As we expected, Marcin's game was going to evolve with a new point guard. Dragic attacks off the pick more often than Nash, rather than floating and setting up the roll man.

MG: I can score in various situations. Finishing pick and rolls, in transition, from midrange, around the rim. There are a lot of options. Unfortunately, my two strongest plays - the pick and roll and post-ups have been taken away from me.

Gortat's most frequent play type last season was being the roll man. He finished on the roll 33% of the time last season, with a robust 1.234 points-per-play. He scored 63.4% of the time. This year, he rolls only 22% of the time as is terrible at finishing (.78 PPP, scoring only 42% of the time). Quite the change. Likely, the problem is where he's getting the ball on the roll, and how little spacing there is on the court. Tighter spaces means narrow driving lanes and easy help defense.

Let's talk post-ups, Marcin's second-best play type. Last year, he posted up 18.3% of the time but scored only 38.8% of the time. Ugh. Maybe he got better over the summer, right? This season, he is posting up slightly more often (18.9% of the time) and scoring slightly better at 41.9% of the time, but that's still not really that good.

As Alvin Gentry puts it: "We'd love to be able to throw him the ball and have him post up and score for us (but) that hasn't been one of his strengths really."

Moving on.

MG: We don't share the ball as much as we have in previous seasons. The ball doesn't move around the perimeter - it usually stops after one or two passes. You can't play like this, let alone win. Basketball is a team sport. Nobody ever won a game alone.

It is definiteiy true that the Suns are not as effective on offense this season compared to last. We all saw the missed shots and the shot-jacking all over the court.

Let's compare the teams side by side.

The Suns, as a team, are shooting more from the inside this year mostly thanks to great offensive rebounding. They are taking seven more shots per game this season but making only 43% of them. Total field goals per game are up while the assist rate is down.

Marcin is right that the ball is "sticking" more than last year. The Suns are 25th in the league in assist ratio on all field goal attempts (including misses), down from 8th a year ago. It's important to note the difference between the best and the worst in the league is quite small though, and the Suns' number is negatively affected by their plethora of missed shots.

So then Marcin is right?

Yes and no. Yes, the Suns are not focusing on him as much as last year, and the Suns are not as effective offensively as a year ago (19th vs. 9th). But Marcin has not proven he is a good one-on-one offensive player, such as the post-up and the spot up.

How will this end for the Suns?

Probably not very soon, unless the Suns are bowled over by an offer to trade. Gortat is a very good rebounder, defender and shot-blocker and those guys do not grow on trees. There are not 30 Marcin Gortats in this league.

As far as Marcin's offense is concerned: "Nothing's going to change. We'll try and throw him the ball and we'll try and get him the ball as much as we possibly can and do everything we can to get him the ball but you know, it is what it is."

Marcin Gortat needs to focus on his other strengths, just as Alvin Gentry wants it:

MG: We've talked before the season started. He said he expects me to play defence, rebound, block shots and quarterback the defence.

Just do that, Marcin.

...and remember to play our Guess the Suns Starting Lineup contest!

Phoenix Suns head coach Alvin Gentry took questions after practice on Monday. He responded to the comments made by Marcin Gortat made in the Polish media.

These quotes are direct from the recorder of our own Mr. David King. I had a some spare time available to transcribe them and so I'm going to present them without editorial comment (although a few things jumped out at me from Gentry's remarks). Dave will be back around tonight to give his thoughts on the matter.

The players left the practice court for a meeting and didn't take questions (although Mr. Paul Coro and Mr. Craig Grialou might have camped out in the hall and waited for them so we might see some quotes turn up later this afternoon. If that happens, we'll share them).

In the mean time, chew on these.

Dave asked Alvin for his comments on what Marcin said. Gentry knew exactly what he was being asked and responded:

"I'm glad he did. It's going to be what it is. Nothing's going to change. We'll try and throw him the ball and we'll try and get him the ball as much as we possibly can and do everything we can to get him the ball but you know, it is what it is."

"We'd love to be able to throw him the ball and have him post up and score for us (but) that hasn't been one of his strengths really."

Dave followed up by asking what Gentry felt Gortat's strengths are:

"Screening, rolling to the basket. Athletic enough that he can get offensive rebounds, running the open court like he did last year. Nothing's changed from last year."

Is his role in the offense impacting his defense and rebounding?

"You should be able to separate them. They're two difference facets of the game. Playing defense and rebounding and blocking shots has nothing to do with what you do on the other end. See Kenneth Faried."

A non-answer there to that last one.

Gentry also discussed the line up change and repeated what he'd said after the game on Saturday, "We will make a change."

He wouldn't say what the change would be or even if he's decided on the specifics yet. He said he just doesn't like how the starting unit is playing together and left the door open for some guys changing positions. Interesting.

"I don't, in general, like the way those guys are playing as a group. We'll look at positions we have guys in and combinations."

Asked specifically about a changed role for P.J. Tucker, Gentry said no. He called him a great defender who would be "in game when we need stops."

He wants to see the team pass more and swing the ball from strong side to weak side but when open, guys need to shoot.

Stay tuned for more on this later.

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat started the season playing great on both ends but has fallen off the table recently. As we well know, the Polish big man is never stingy with his opinions and shared some choice words with media from his home country.

Look, this situation isn't a surprise to me. The season ended last year with Gortat either in or very near Alvin Gentry's dog house. His propensity for shifting blame and inability to do certain things on the court (like box out his man) were frustrating to watch. Even before the season began he was calling for more pick and rolls so he could get his touches despite the fact that the Suns don't have the shooters to space the floor. And as much as we love Goran Dragic, Goran Dragic is no Steve Nash.

Despite those ominous signs, Marcin started things off with a bang. He was a shot blocking machine and was finding his points in a very efficient manner. But after recording five blocks, 12 points and 11 rebounds in the comeback win over the Cavs, he's been a virtual non-factor culminating in a season-low 23 minutes against the Heat on Saturday.

Well, here's some choice words from Marcin to make the situation <strike>better</strike> so much worse.

Marcin Gortat’s Rebellion | The Gothic Ginobili

Coach Alvin Gentry told me that the main post option was Luis Scola. You, on the other hand, are number one on defense.

MG: Unfortunately... I've been doing the dirty work all my life, and now I have to come back to that. I will fight for what's mine. I'll try to prove to the coach that I can play an important role in the offence. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm even an option for Gentry. He doesn't even take me into consideration. The situation is critical. We're playing the same thing we've been playing last year, but the truth is we have a completely different set of players. I don't think it really works. I can't get frustrated now though, I have to stay positive.

The quotes are coming from an interview that Gortat gave to the Polish web site Przeglad Sportowy which you can find here. There's plenty more there.

The translation above comes from NBA blogger Adam Koscielak at Gothic Ginobili. Adam says he's a native Polish speaker (which I can't verify since I am not a native Polish speaker). The quotes, however, appear to be accurately translated. I know we have enough Polish readers to confirm or refute the translations.

Przeglad Sportowy also reports that Gortat rejected an extension offer from the Suns and that the Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls are interested in trading for him. Wonder where they got that information?

Regardless of how you evaluate Gortat's skills and potential as a basketball player (I've always considered him an average starter while others saw more), no one can be happy with his lack of discretion with his frustrations.

If you aren't happy with your role in the offense, take it up with the coach. If you still disagree with what you are being told, go out and prove yourself on the court. Marcin seems to understand this and yet can't help but also throw gas on the fire with his public comments.

Does he think that things reported in Poland won't make it back to Arizona? He's a smart guy and knows better than that.

Stay tuned for some interesting damage control in the next few days as Gortat and Gentry are asked about these comments.

For those rosterbators in the crowd, fire up the trade machine (The Polish Trade Machine!) and have some fun. 37 Internet Win Points if anyone correctly guesses a move in advance.
